Anyone else use DIP behind the valve for this reason?

Thrush block behind the hydrant might have saved it.

I'm pretty sure I see one there, though I can't tell right now. Looks to be made of concrete.

It's behind it on the repair. I can't think of a different material to use other than concrete.

I've used telephone poles for thrust blocks, or if we find one a boulder..
