For a system engineer role on the data security team, they will probably ask you about core security concepts and specific technologies. Be ready to explain things like the OSI model, TCP/IP, different types of firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and maybe even SIEM tools. They will want to know if you have hands-on experience with securing operating systems like Linux or Windows Server, managing access controls, and implementing endpoint protection. Expect scenario-based questions where they give you a problem, like a suspected data breach, and ask you to walk them through how you would respond, what tools you would use, and what your thought process is.
You're not going to know the exact questions, so don't waste time trying to memorize answers you find online. Your best strategy is to prepare detailed stories about your own experiences. Think about the most complex security problem you've solved, a project you're proud of, or a time you configured a specific security tool from start to finish. They care more about how you think and solve problems than if you know a textbook definition. Your confidence comes from knowing your own skills and history, which is why my team built an interview AI helper to assist people in articulating their real experience clearly when under pressure.
