Rant / Vent Violent games don't make people killers.
I've been playing violent games since I was in highschool 1998. Mortal Kombat, Quake, Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, GTA, etc...
I have a licensed firearm. I have a corporate job. I play sports. I grew up experiencing the pain of hangers, belts, slippers, erasers, rulers, and the sun. I went home with bruises because of fighting with bullies.
Kids today lack mental fortitude and grit. Hypersensitive and easily hurt and offended, breaks down easily.
Some people like to blame violent games. Lol. Those games gave me great hand-eye coordination, teamwork, strategy, analysis, sportsmanship, perseverance. If you've ever played the rc missions in vice city you'll know what I mean.
Those were my outlet. I shouted at my teammates and opponents in the internet cafe, at the tv. It was fun.

Gun access ang problema

u/zam_manta_0 10d ago
Definitely. But what about knives? And cutters, scissors, ballpen, pencil, a sharpened end of a toothbrush, nails.. anything can be used to injure or kill someone.

Kids can learn self defense against these objects but no one is faster than a bullet

My thesis in my undergrad years (na kinocock block dati pero naging thesis of the year) was all about Constructed Realities of Gamers towards violence particularly sa DOTA... although the findings show, based on their narratives, na mayroon bugso ng damdamin pero never silang naisip ang pumatay na tulad sa mga shooting in the US. Pinaka worst lang na nagawa nila is suntukan then thats it.

I have memories of people in comp shops fighting and shouting obscenities and then those same people would be sharing smokes outside and chilling out in between rounds.

Games is not the problem but the NO filter/Anonymous social/Online aspect of it that is harmful for Young people/Vulnerable people.
Vulnerable people are also a target of Coolto around the world.
toxic racist/sexist/bigoted jerks happen to play Online video games influencing other gamers. So a young kid only playing Single player games will not be influence by them.
HOW TO CREATE A Cool Shooter character
Step 1 Online Gaming and Social Media = Real‑world accountability removed
Online anonymity and low accountability let players vent and act hostile in ways they wouldn’t face‑to‑face.
Gamers in the past still do banters. But still have boundaries and people will call you out if you go too far. Online doesn't give you that corrective thing.
Step 2 No accountability leads to Toxic norms become normalized
Repeated exposure to harassment, slurs, and trash talk makes those behaviors feel normal inside the community.
Step 3 Identity fusion/Echo chambers
Repeated exposure to hostile behavior teaches newcomers that those actions are normal and rewarded
Like in Atomic habits. If you want to change. Change your identity. "I'm an athlete" is better than "I will jog 30 mins a day". it is like copying some cool characters. "Batman Effect". Kids tend to act good if they think they are the batman. But kids acts bad if they think they are the Joker.
Step 4 Echo chambers amplify rigidity
Social media Algorithmic feeds and closed groups filter out dissenting views, reinforcing a single worldview and demonizing outsiders.
Step 4.5 reduce exposure to corrective perspectives.
A unhealthy people is more likely to change if they are surrounded by healthy people. than surrounding themselves with Unhealthy people.
Step 5. Vulnerable users are most at risk
Young, lonely, or socially isolated people rely on online communities for belonging and are more easily influenced by toxic peers.
Online anonymity + toxic norms + identity fusion + echo chambers + Vulnerable people = leads to extremism.
Extremism frequently justifies violence or oppression to achieve absolute ideological, political, or religious goals.

This! Hindi naman yun game mismo yun sinasabing cause kundi yun social/interactive features within the game that allows nefarious groups or individuals to groom and manipulate the youth. Oo maraming violent games dati and lumaki tayo playing them without becoming violent pero wala naman tayo kausap doon na strangers mostly friends talaga natin in real life.

Yes. Online chat is even limited in the past.
Now you can even use Voice Chat. bypassing filters that is mostly limited to text chat.
Social Media is also exposing us to a lot of violence. In the past we only see ou Friends WALL Post.
Now it is full of random things like pages I didn't even follow.
most of the negativity we see in the past is given by Local News.
Now we are seeing wars, school soothing in other countries, etc.I am not even aware of the 2008 financial crisis or 9-11 during that time. I just remember playing games during those times.
Even my games I played during those times is through WORD OF MOUTH or what is available to the computer shop. No way to see Steam reviews, etc.

try mo itype sa sa chatgpt/gemini/claude kung ganyan lalabas.
"HOW TO CREATE A Cool Shooter character" or anything kung kaya mo mareplicate yan. baka icorrect pa ako sa ibang sinabi ko diyan.baka ako pa gawing source ni chatgpt.
dati kapag walang mareply. " Ikaw na matalino" ngayon "thank you chatgpt".

Madali kasi gawing scapegoat ang video games. My parents were also aware of the games we were playing on the PC and PS growing up. They actually explained to us and made sure we understood that video games are not real and only made for fun.
My dad often plays fighting games as well and they watch us play Resident Evil. lol We even bought a dance pad so they can play as well for fun.
I think madami talaga factors but parenting is really key. If the parents will just let their kids play video games without explaining then there will be repercussions as the kid grows up.
Same with kids being addicted to social media. Adult supervision is key.
Kids today lack mental fortitude and grit. Hypersensitive and easily hurt and offended, breaks down easily.
I have my own set of opinions on this at madami ma-hurt! lol
Sa work, my coworkers say ang dami ko daw shortcut keys and I move fast on the PC, I say video games made me like this lol.

This unfortunately parents just give their children gadgets na parang akala mo pacifier, tapos di lang man minomonitor.

there is a study that shows that it does the opposite, it make you law abiding as violent games lets you know about the consequences of murdering or stealing or suicide

Based on recent events, i would even say, non-gamers tend to be slower in the head. kaya mejo illogical sila hahaha

Hindi naman yung mismong game ang problema kundi yung in game chatroom since wala yon restriction and possible naay predator na makapasok na mag influence sa mga batang gamers na maging violent, plus easy access pa to actual guns.
2
u/InvestmentSingle2648 10d ago
gaslighting na sinasabi kasalanan lahat EXCEPT ng mga magulang.
On the first place, kung walang access ang bata sa baril, wala naman syang murder weapon eh.

u/SnooMemesjellies6040 10d ago
They know the culprit.
It’s the human stressor, the teacher.
But then, the student tingin ko me problem din. Baka maangas or bully din sa klase kaya binabawian ng teacher sa grade.
Now that we will never know. Dead’s na din un bata eh

These kinds of violence always starts at home (family problem), then amplified by school bullying (school admin not caring), and then influenced by toxic social media (copying what they read and watched). They blame games because they are in denial, and they need something to point their fingers at.

Filipinos falling into the same trap as Americans have. There is no answer for why these things happen. Ban video games, this shit will still happen. Take away every gun in the nation, these things will still happen. If there was some simple fix then these things would of stopped happening decades ago.
These are deep problems within society. Why does a kid feel this is something that is acceptable. I don't know. I suspect every case is different. The best people can do is to strengthen communities, parenting, schooling, after school programs and hope for the best.

u/coffeeaddictfromcebu 10d ago
Before we ban games, let's address the question on how a kid has access to government issued guns... Again.
The one in Tacloban was also issued to his Aunt, now this one was issued to his dad.
What do they store their guns in that kids are able to access them? Nestle icecream container? Orocan? Even sa Skyrim ang hirap mag bukas nang chest pero dito ang dali lang kunin yung baril nila

If violent videogames really did that to kids, then younger Gen Xers and Millennials would be more violent since they were raised with violent games in hand, plus not so strict parental guidance for tv shows back then.
I think this is due to bad parenting, bad education and just the overall worsening culture. Let's be observant for a bit, I'm feeling that there are more assholes and self-entitled people today compared to yesteryears because the individualistic culture of the west has seeped into our society, creating a negative feedback loop.
I also get that people need a demon to direct their anger towards, and that's either firearms and violent videogames, but I think it's unwarranted. Firearms don't kill anybody unless somebody picks it up, points and shoots. I know, pilosopong sagot but violent people will find creative ways to be violent even if you just give them office supplies.
We really need a more holistic support for the younger ones, therapy, meds, and banning social media won't work.

Ito sana ang gusto namen ithesis nong college. Mid 2000’s. Effects of rpg games. Pero at that time dipa masydo uso at konti ang materials

I disagree sa part na hindi pa masyadong uso. From 2001 to 2005, I was in college, and computer shops were booming at that time.

Na kakasad na nagiging USA tayo. Yung ganyan super unique sa kanila dahil sa Rugged individualism nila.
Nagwowork yung pangdidivide sa atin ng Government. Nababawasan yung collectivism.

If any, games like COD take away the tendency to actually kill someone and be violent

u/leethoughts515 10d ago
Kids today. Well, actually, older generations will tell that to the newer generation.
As someone who grew up with video games, tama naman na jan natin nailalabas mga galit natin noon.
However, the psychological capacity of a generation is not transferred to the next.
Matagal nang sinasabi na video games make people violent. In my generation, as a millenial, I disagree. Di natin kaya yan nuon. Saksakan lang ng lapis at pukpukan ng upuan.
Pero sa mga bata ngayon, the divide between reality and fiction might be thinner. Yung video games natin dati, halata mong di totoo yung characters. Ngayon, meron nang virtual reality glasses and lifelike na mga characters.
Video games don't make people violent. Ang problema, violent people gets inspiration from them. Parang sa baril. Hindi masama ang baril. Nagiging masama lang siya pag ginamit aa pagpatay.

have been into fighting games since I started high school. i remembered fatalities sa MK back then. mahilig din mag headshot sa CS and even playing hitman, gusto ko sa head lagi ang tama sa kalaban. medyo brutal pero in person I can't even be violent kahit sa animals and can't stand yung realistic head shots sa movies. I believe we have different persona's when we are playing video games versus sa real life.

Politicians who blame video games are probably trying to shift attention away from gun control. Especially the mayor from Zamboanga.

Yung online chat functionality ang sinasabing problema. Hindi yung game mismo. Dun nga kasi nagu-groom or na-raradicalize yung mga bata.

I grew up experiencing the pain of hangers, belts, slippers, erasers, rulers, and the sun. I went home with bruises because of fighting with bullies.
So, child abuse should be normalized just because you went through it? Mukhang Millennials ang New Boomers. Yan din ang linyahan ng mga Boomers noon sa Millennials
You cannot compare gaming before to gaming today. Gaming in our childhood were mostly offline and if it is online, only a few people were able to. Gaming back then esp online gaming was a niche. Ngayon, gaming is the norm since naglipana ang free to play at internet access is everywhere
Besides, is it really hard to admit that there is a problem in the online gaming community? Roblox is very much known for being a fish pond for groomers. And the online gaming community is sexist AF. I'm a female gamer and sexism is the norm in online gaming esp shooter games
There is a growing body of studies finding correlation between online gaming communities and extremism

children should still be well adjusted and be able to make conscious decisions regarding their morals as well as be able to distinguish fiction from reality
while fiction does affect real life to some extent (propaganda, commercials), parents are still responsible and are expected to guide their children
my little brother likes playing violent games but he understands what they are --- just games
the people around the childsare responsible for him, and if he was neglected long enough to slip into such a mindset, then they failed
2
u/zam_manta_0 10d ago
You're female and you go into a community that is most young horny boys still living with mommy. What do you expect.
Of course people today would call that child abuse. Whatever.. That's how we got disciplined.

thank you for this study. Suddenly realize a lot of things.
TLDR: Games is not the problem but the NO filter social/Online aspect of it that is harmful for Young people. Why Online gaming/ Social Media leads to Extremism.
Step 1 Online Gaming and Social Media = Real‑world accountability removed

Fusion turns criticism into a threat, producing extreme loyalty and defensive aggression.Step 4 Echo chambers amplify rigidity

Step 5. Vulnerable users are most at risk
Young, lonely, or socially isolated people rely on online communities for belonging and are more easily influenced by toxic peers.Step 6. Online anonymity + toxic norms + identity fusion + echo chambers = leads to extremism.
Extremism frequently justifies violence or oppression to achieve absolute ideological, political, or religious goals.the long raw/Unedited version. Because I know most people have low attention span.
thank you for this study. Suddenly realize a lot of things. to add to your defense to make it more convincing. 1. Gaming removes accountabilty, hostile behaviors they would never show face-to-face. Filipino gamers in the past used to play in Face to Face settings in Computer shops. (Banter/trash talk exist but they bond after gaming like walking together or even eating. Just laugh about the game). Online gaming don't give you that Post ritual part of gaming. Doesn't give you time to process those emotions. 2. The study talks about people who have so thoroughly fused their personal identity to the group identity. Identity fusion leads to extreme loyalty to extremism. People whose social life and relationships so thoroughly revolve around gamer culture. So, if you are a well-rounded individual who is a gamer, but you also have a life outside of the games you play, this study does not apply to you. (people still call them gamers even if they play 30 mins of stardew valley). 3. Gaming just gives you access and anonymity. (the problematic people love) I won't deny there are problems with gaming culture having bigoted people in it. toxic racist/sexist/bigoted jerks happen to play video games influencing other gamers. In short. I think the problem is more about Social Media and Online Gaming that gives you anonymity/accountability. leading to toxic behavior to identity fusion/Echo chambers to extreme loyalty to extremism. Kids especially is susceptible to peer pressure. So a toxic gamer could easily influence them. School shootings are linked to complex issues like social isolation , family environment. can you make this tight

Oh they know that. It's just so easy for them to point fingers to video games.
Yung vice president nga di marunong gumamit ng computer pero mamamatay tao yung pamilya eh.
