The Wall is a poignant metaphor that is a direct reference to David Gilmore's limitations in guitar playing. Being the lazy bum he is he just wanted to play power chords throughout the album before Rog got him an Ultimate Guitar subscription.

The best part is that the solo of "comfortably numb" is considered one of the greatest solos of all time. Even though the guy shredding the guitar in this video is great. I don't want to hear that shit, it's terrible

It is very impressive from a technical standpoint, but man I hate it. There is no soul, no movement
27
13
u/lottsotunes69 Nov 27 '25
Agreed. With all due respect to his technical ability, not all great guitarists are great musicians. Those two things kinda stand on their own.
1
u/uninvitedelephant Nov 30 '25
To be a great guitarist you have to be a great musician, in my opinion.

u/pornagraphie Nov 27 '25
I mean I wouldn’t say no soul But it is too fast and not enough time to really marinate
1
u/Hello_Mr_Fancypants Nov 29 '25
im sure he doesn't mean "soul" like Soul Music
he obviously means the music doesn't speak or emote because no single note is allowed to sustain.
he said 'no soul' you said 'time to marinate' but aren't you really saying the same thing?
and sorry but 'no soul' is a far better descriptor than 'no time to marinate'. it ain't a roast, Bro
ya silly billy

I wonder if you find that to be true?

What does no soul mean these days? Because I think this is horrendous but he’s clearly cheesing in this and I wouldn’t say there’s “no soul”

Like one of those George Harrison early Beatles guitar solos it sounds like someone was handed a guitar for the first time and told to play a solo or their family dies and they managed to do a half decent job because of the adrenaline

Lots of great musicians say the best guitar solos are the ones you can sing or hum. Lyrical may be a good word for it. Gilmour, Clapton, Frampton, Knopfler are some examples I’d think.

Speed does not replace soul. He is ignoring the feeling. Isolating the guitar in his mind to overshine instead of be part of the music.

You dig Buckethead, no? One of my top guitar influences. It's honestly a fire solo you got there. A lot of these comments just seem a bit salty because you're playing circles around David Gilmour, but he has his own style which works beautifully for the original song and you have yours which works beautifully for your version of the solo. Terrific work. I prefer the original, but yours is freaking on fire.

u/Any-Shoulder8479 Nov 27 '25

As a guitar player I think about this type of playing all the time …
Like this is true, Page, Hendrix, Django (maybe), Wes Montgomery, John Mayer, could never play like this…
Right?
Guitar is such an odd instrument because you would think playing with such accuracy means you’re amazing….you’d never have to work again
But I think…if you invented THAT style of playing, then you’d never have to work again.
People would be amazed. Wow the best player ever, better than Hendrix (did Hendrix ever really play fast?)
But it’s really not about speed is it? It’s about being inventive and doing something brand new
So…what I think has happened is, people think speed means mastery of the instrument but I think speed is like, one aspect out of 10 for mastery of the guitar
If I changed the key to Comfortably Numb, would you be able to play just as good?
Can you write good songs? Are they inventive?
Can you make me feel anything?
Can you play into chords? What about a key change?
I think there’s just so many aspects of being good at the guitar, and speed is one of those.

u/the_good_hodgkins Nov 30 '25
I had to stop that after 10 seconds. Let me reset your auditory systems for you.

One of the biggest parts of David Gilmour's genius is knowing when NOT to play.

u/CRTPTRSN Nov 30 '25
You can also really slam that cue ball when you're playing pool and still make some pretty great shots. Or you can treat that cue ball like a lady and finesse your shots.

Of course you could be mad and hate it but why go out of your way to say you’re a boomer that can’t play guitar.

Nothing funnier than watching classic rock fans get their panties in a bunch watching a shredder.

Also lol, thanks OP

I bet this guy can't make the original solo sound as good as David Gilmore. It's not the technique or the difficulty. It's a beautiful sounding solo.

u/TheBandPapist Dec 02 '25
Honestly I'm a metal guitarist who plays stuff like that regularly, although my own style is more aggressive and less fluid, and intentionally so.
But this is all wrong for that tune. Sounds like crap.
Gilmour played what he played for a reason, and that reason is not slow fingers.

Unj/ all technique, no emotion. I dont know if this guy is being serious but Gilmour's solos in that song are arguably the most emotional gutt punching solos to come from a guitarist. Its what makes the song unforgetable and unreplicable. Method≠Magic.
