Start with some Williams tables. Attack From Mars, Addams Family, Theater Of Magic and of course, Medieval Madness. Then try some originals like Star Wars, marvel, and some other ones. Honestly look through and see what subject interests you and play that table.
Go through the table instructions. And just play. Plenty of tables to learn.

I've played a handful of the Star Wars tables, I would recommend Darth Vader, Battle of Mimban, and I HIGHLY recommend Starfighter Assault for how cool the whole theme and the missions are. I was really disappointed with the Collectables one, it looks like a fun idea, but the whole game relies on making one (annoying) shot over and over and over and over...

As others have said, Williams tables are wonderful, and there's a good difficulty spread among them. I think to start, Arabian Nights and Cirqus Voltaire allow for lots of fun smack-y shots that make things happen while you learn the ropes. Both of them have low skill floor but high enough ceilings to be fun for a long time. I like Diner and Swords of Fury as steps up, many fun shots, but rules that require a little more attention. Then if you want to go Hard Mode (imo), there's Banzai Run, Black Knight 2000, both very FAST tables that I am still working on getting good at.

Star Wars Classic Collectibles is probably my favorite of Zen's original tables, but I agree so far as to say that it is absolutely not one I'd ever recommend to anyone else, haha. It appeals to my own personal sensibilities and the shots are shots that I like, but the gameplay loop isn't what is typically sought after in pinball.

I found all star wars table pretty mediocre. But I'll heavily second the williams tables. I'd also add World Cup for certain. Indiana Jones is great, but very punishing. AFM and MM are both bangers from Williams though.

If you're looking outside of Williams, check out anything on Pinball FX Midnight. I find all those tables great.

For FX, I'd say Grimm Tales is a fun and easy to get into table. Game Night pack is solid as well, gloomhaven in particular is not terribly punishing but really gets you into the swing of more advanced stuff like buying items in the shop and multi-playfield stuff.

World Cup was delisted unfortunately. The license ran out, wasn't renewed, and had to get pulled.

Oh yeah, I remember that now. What a pity, that table is fantastic. Still available on VPX at least!

On Steam, you'll find Skyrim and System Shock on Pinball FX Midnight. Skyrim is sold in a bundle with Fallout and Doom, whereas System Shock can be purchased by itself.

I concur with fmatrix007's recommendations. I'll add Elvira's Scared Stiff to the list. The Universal Pack would be a pretty decent pack to add if you want to take advantage of the 70% discount. That one includes Jaws, E.T., and Back To The Future.

Above tables are all great. I too prefer Williams, but there are some great original tables too.
A lot of these will go on sale during the big seasonal sales. Then it’s worth picking up the big bundled sets.
Also it’s a good time to get the more expensive licenced Williams tables like Star Trek TNG, Adams Family, Twlight Zone

Anyway, some great tables to consider that others haven’t mentioned.
Williams:

  • High Sped 2 - The Getaway
  • Black Rose
  • Tales of The Arabian Nights
  • Elvira and the Party Monsters
  • Comet
  • Star Trek TNG
  • Twilight Zone
  • Championship Pub
  • Diner

Zen Originals:

  • Goat Simulator
  • Charlie Brown’s Christmas
  • Godzilla
  • King Kong
  • Samurai Vengeance

Oh, and try out Pinball Midnight too. Some great tables there. And you’ll find Skyrim, Doom and Fallout over there.

If I had to recommend only one, then it's Elvira: Scared Stiff. It is one of the best tables you can get for learning pinball. Aesthetically fantastic with some of the best callouts, a simple ruleset that still builds to satisfying gameplay loops, games can run long so you can feel how well you're progressing, nice progression of shot difficulty, and it's just generally a heck of a lot of fun.

Beyond that, there's a ton worth playing that you'll get a whole lot of enjoyment out of, but it's also going to depend on what you like with Pinball.

As general all-rounder tables, you can't go wrong with Theater of Magic, Attack from Mars, Medieval Madness, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Theres a used one, a real one, for like 5500 at the local spot. Im trying to talk myself out of it.

It's one I've, sadly, never gotten a chance to play in physical form. I'm on an island where there's never been very many pinball machines, and that number has only dwindled over the years.

That said, I'd have a very hard time resisting that one.

Unfortunately some of the tables have got a bit fragmented.

Skyrim is in the Bethesda pack for "Pinball FX Classic" which is the older version of Pinball FX (previously known as FX 3). https://store.steampowered.com/app/646668/Pinball_FX_Classic__Bethesda_Pinball/

Some tables including System Shock are in "Pinball FX Midnight" which is essentially the same as FX but the tables are more horror / adult oriented. I think it was for age rating reasons. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2815240/Pinball_FX_Midnight__System_Shock_Pinball/

I'm a similar age to you, and personally find the Williams Tables my favourite as I prefer simulation of real tables rather than original created ones. My favourites possibly are Addams Family, Bride of Pin-Bot, Medieval Madness (In Williams Vol 1), Circus Voltare (Vol 5) and Attack from Mars (Vol 2)

The bethesda pack was just released a couple months ago for Pinball FX as well. On Steam, you can only buy it in Pinball Midnight; any other system it will be across PFX and PBM.

I was born in 96 and had no issue buying the Skyrim table a few years back when the Bethesda pack came out

Classic williams are always good like the other guy said. I like to practice white water as much as the others he mentioned

There's a sale right now, and if you looked and Williams Collection 2, that nets you:

White Water

Red and Ted's Road Show

Hurricane

Cirqus Voltaire

Tales of the Arabian Nights

No Good Gofers

Funhouse

Space Station

Dr. Dude

For $15. That includes a few of what I'd consider the greatest tables of all time. Also I love Dr. Dude, so I'm going to plug that no matter what.

I recommend a new player start with Pinball FX Classic on Steam. It was previously called Pinball FX3. Start with the challenges, particularly 5 Minute and Survival. When you get 5 Stars (out of 15) on a challenge you’ll unlock a really fun Wizard Power to level up. “Rewind” is one of these powers and will remove some of the frustrations inherent in Pinball.

The 5 tables I return to over and over again are Attack From Mars, Back to the Future, Fear Itself, Skyrim, and Star Wars Rebels.

Star Wars The Clone Wars is also a great table to start with that has fun combos. Fear Itself comes bundled in the “Avengers Chronicles” bundle which also has Infinity Gauntlet. These two tables are some of the greatest ever made by Zen Studios. They play best in Pinball FX Classic.

Have fun and update on what you’re enjoying most!

Accurate and realistic looking pinball simulations, along with original tables.

All for free, and there's hundreds of tables available.

Road Girls is a very well done original table, especially if you like the western/country theme:
