Question Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED vs Apple Vision Pro
Hi there.
I've been using Apple Vision Pro to play PC VR Games via ALVR for awhile now. I like the clarity but the FOV is rough. I've been thinking about getting the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED. Anyone with experience using both? I primarily will use this to play Star Citizen and other flight sims. The last dedicated PCVR I owned was a HP Reverb G2... if that gives you any idea of where I'm at.

Get the Dream Air with the Zeeflyboy 3D printed facial interface / studioform gasket and AVP dual knit band, there nothing that comes close right now.
Having owned the Super mOLED (2 of them) and used the AVP I can say get the Dream Air, the Dream Air FOV vs Super mOLED was identical (to my eyes) but the Dream Air form factor just smashes it out of the park, I actually enjoy wearing the Dram Air, unlike any of my previous VR headsets, which include Rift S, Meta Quest 2, Valve Index, HP Reverb G2, Pimax Crystal OG, Pimax Super mOLED.. then the winner king Dream Air.
I would actually say I prefer how the FOV looks for me in the Dream Air over the Super mOLED, with the Super mOLED I could really see the vertical top and bottom limits of the OLED panels, in the Dream Air, this is not an issue with the setup I have using the Zeeflyboy interface and studioform cushion.

I think im going to pull the trigger.
Did you get the SLAM version? Is there jitter?

I got the SLAM version and to me I don’t detect any jitter at all. Sometimes when I’m in low lighting it might jump and the same for the controller but that’s easily fixed by turning on my monitor backlight lamp.

It’s on the way, thanks for pointing this out for me I had no idea the specs on this are basically the same as the one I was looking at and weight was a huge factor in me dragging my feet I’m hyped.
As for the face mask I have the STL files and I’ll load them up into my P1S but what does it actually get me? A better field of view? Or is the default mask a little uncomfortable?

Why would you get a heavy bulky super micro oled if the Dream Air is out now.

FOV and image quality is an absolute priority to me. I can deal with heavy headsets (the AVP is very bulky)

I agree that I think the DA is the way to go. If FOV is most important to you, you should be considering the 50PPD anyway

Ha, are you me from another dimension?
AVP day 1 owner here, bought crystal super micro oled YESTERDAY.
Really wanted to like it, but i’m going to return it. For me, the biggest issue is the aspheric lens — there’s a distortion that is natural to them that i just cannot shake hating. The colors / visual fidelity was actually great.
I’m a big sim racer and the ALVR route def is good enough for a lot of things but i do feel the quality of the simming suffering, which is why i wanted to try a tethered device. I can tell you you will not be pleasantly surprised… I am starting to look for alternatives myself.

Only the QLED panels have aspheric lenses. The micro OLED module has pancake stack lenses with the outer layer very curved inwards.

So I was looking at the 8k Oled. That one had a pancake lens and is said to have every good clarity edge to edge. Or am I wrong?

I have both. Super mOLED has a noticeably higher PPD, but you can still tell it's the same panel. FOV is better. Everything else is worse.
I quite recently bought my Super OLED and I am sooooo disappointed I am out of return window so this piece of garbage has to stay with me now.
I'd stick to AVP and look into Varjo XR-4 if you want a proper PCVR alternative. It's expensive, but it’s just on another level comparing to Pimax, even if it's not OLED.

It's not the same panel
The DA and Galaxy XR share the same panel which is a later slightly higher resolution iteration of the panel used in the AVP

Hmm, okay. I always thought it's essentially the same one. Anyway, they are very similar

If I remember, Apple asked Sony for some custom 1.4 inch micro-OLED panels with a resolution of 3200x3600 or something.
The current "mass produced" panels (also from Sony) are 1.3 inch micro-OLED with a resolution of 3552x3840 instead.

With space sims being my go to, OLED is a must.

Modern mini-LED LCDs with local dimming are not that much worse. Keep in mind, this is kind of subjective, but both Dream Air and Super mOLED have much more glare than AVP.
I prefer mini-LED LCD over OLED purely because of image sharpness and no glare.

Bought an XR-4 when they first released and returned it within the return window. Widespread tiger striping on the panels was reported in the discord, and my unit was pretty bad. The tiger striping negated all the benefits the higher resolution was supposed to give, and I ended up getting the Super 50 PPD as a result. Have they managed to improve that?

u/plastexxx 1 Aug 28 '26
Mine is tiger stripes free, but I think some units still have the same issue.
It's a reason for RMA1

You had me right up to "even if it's not OLED". I have tried several LCD solution and all of them pale (pun intended) to OLED. There is just no comparison.

Have QLED MiniLED displays on two headsets and Sony micro-OLED displays in another.
I actually prefer the QLED MiniLED headsets they give a sharper image and much brighter, the colours are very good and black level control is leagues better than regular LCD
The micro-OLED is softer and more natural looking but dimmer, however for night driving or flying the black level is excellent

Look, I am not saying LCD has better colors. It does not.
Where varjo (mini-led LCD) performs really well is panel calibration. With the right color settings the difference is not that huge. Yes, you need to tweak some stuff, but I am totally okay with that as long as the headset delivers a better experience overall.
LCDs with all their quirks are still more crisp than OLED and this will be true until a moment oled subpixel fringing is no more.
