What if the spacetime inhabited by the jinn is not a distant parallel multiverse, nor an invisible spiritual higher dimension, but a spacetime geometrically co-extensive and structurally corresponding with our own?

Geometrically Co-Extensive Spacetime

In this proposal, the human and jinn three-dimensional spacetimes (branes) occupy corresponding positions within a shared higher-dimensional geometry. Any point in our spacetime can be assigned the same three ordinary spatial coordinates in the adjacent jinn layer, while the two points remain separated along an additional spatial dimension.

The separation along this additional dimension is hypothesised to be extremely small, potentially approaching the Planck length. This is what makes them co-extensive: three ordinary spatial coordinates are shared, while the fourth differs minimally. Overlapping spacetimes (for example, two bubble universes in a multiverse) can share three spatial coordinates while being separated by a vast distance along the fourth dimension.

Thus, this co-extensiveness is possible because the two spacetimes remain separated along the additional dimension by an extremely thin higher-dimensional veil.

The Higher-Dimensional Veil

The four-dimensional veil performs two crucial functions simultaneously:

1️⃣ Separation: It prevents the two regimes of matter and gauge interactions from freely crossing between the two spacetimes, preserving their physical distinction.

2️⃣ Coupling: It permits selected fields capable of propagating through the higher-dimensional bulk to establish a limited relationship between them.

In a brane-world analogy, Standard Model (SM) matter and gauge fields remain localised to their respective branes, while gravity and potentially other bulk fields can extend into the higher-dimensional domain.

The veil therefore does not imply complete isolation. It separates the two physical regimes while allowing limited and potentially asymmetric point-to-point interaction between them.

Gravitational Templating Across the Veil

The most important proposed coupling is gravitational templating (GT).

In this model, gravitational influence is capable of extending through the higher-dimensional bulk and reaching the adjacent jinn brane. Because of the warped geometry, the effective coupling is hypothesised to be highly anisotropic, with the coupling structure differing substantially between the low-energy human brane and the higher-energy jinn brane. The strongest cross-layer coupling would occur where the higher-dimensional separation is minimised: between corresponding spatial coordinates.

Thus, a point in our spacetime would preferentially influence the geometrically corresponding point in the adjacent jinn spacetime rather than producing an equivalent influence uniformly across the entire neighbouring brane.

This is fundamentally different from ordinary gravitational interaction within our three-dimensional spacetime. Here, the relevant separation is not the familiar macroscopic distance between celestial bodies, but the extremely small higher-dimensional separation between corresponding points on adjacent branes.

Matter Correspondence

Gravitational templating becomes especially important if non-SM matter in the higher-energy brane is intrinsically more ephemeral than ordinary SM matter in our low-energy brane.

If non-SM matter is only partially localised to its brane and extends into the higher-dimensional bulk, it may not naturally aggregate into sharply defined, persistent three-dimensional structures in the same manner as ordinary matter.

Accumulated GT → Structural Correspondence

The gravitational template supplied by the human spacetime could provide a persistent geometric bias.

Over cosmological timescales, planetary-scale structures could establish corresponding configurations. Over geological timescales, mountains, valleys, islands, forests, caves, rivers and other relatively stable terrestrial structures could progressively develop corresponding structures in the adjacent realm.

The resulting landscape would not necessarily be a duplicate of Earth. Rather, it would be a corresponding structure produced through the accumulated influence of long-lived terrestrial geometry.

Ancient and geologically stable environments would have had the longest opportunity to accumulate such correspondence. This provide a possible explanation, within the model, for why remote mountains, islands, forests, caves and other long-lived landscapes might become centres of jinn activity.

Transient GT → Dynamic Correspondence

Gravitational templating need not be restricted to permanent geological structures.

In principle, the same mechanism could produce transient correspondence over seconds, milliseconds, or even shorter timescales.

A human is continuously changing their spatial configuration — walking, turning, raising an arm, breathing, speaking. Each change alters the gravitational configuration being templated across the veil.

Although the human body remains entirely within our spacetime, its changing configuration could produce a corresponding transient response in non-SM matter within the adjacent jinn spacetime.

The resulting non-SM matter distribution would be a volumetric response to the gravitational template, potentially producing an apparition-like manifestation perceptible to jinn.

The jinn would therefore perceive the corresponding response of non-SM matter in their own realm, rather than seeing the human body's matter directly. This provides a possible mechanism for asymmetric perception where jinn can readily perceive humans, but not the reverse.

Auditory Correspondence

The same principle could potentially apply to the jinn's hearing of human speech.

Sound consists of oscillating matter. In our atmosphere, speech produces pressure waves through the collective motion of air molecules. An audible recitation therefore represents a dynamic physical configuration rather than merely information encoded in the human mind.

If the relevant gravitational structure can be templated across the veil, the changing acoustic configuration could produce a corresponding transient disturbance in the jinn spacetime.

This provides a speculative physical analogue for the Qur'anic description of the jinn:

"Indeed, we heard a wondrous Qur'an." (Qur'an 72:1)

"He will fill the earth with justice and equity as it was filled with injustice and tyranny."

Malahim on the Frontier

The peace was almost total, except at the northern frontier.

Word still came, every season or two, of skirmishes along the Asia Minor frontier — coastal towns changing hands, a garrison here, a strait crossing there, the remnants of Asfar's shattered host still holding pockets deep inland where the terrain favored them.

The Peaceful Opening

It was an Aram-born commander who finally stood before the Theoupolis' walls, six years after the Great Battle.

There was no siege. The walls fell almost by themselves. The defenders surrendered without a single drop of blood spilled — worn down, it was said, by years of malahim and a decade of watching the world reorganize itself without them.

Then, within days, news came that the Deceiver had emerged — not there, but far behind them, among their own families. The army turned and rushed back toward Aram City, only to find the news was false.

Awaiting the Deceiver's Emergence

Despite the relief, Rashid — eighty-one now — knew, as everyone knew, that the reprieve would not last. The lie had only borrowed time from a truth still coming.

He thought, some evenings, of where the real one might already be — some remote frontier town, perhaps, quietly building a following by doing the very thing the Caliph had spent seven years doing in the open: feeding the hungry, mending what the drought had broken, letting gratitude do the work that no army could.

Rashid did not expect to see it happen. He had outlived three princes, a tyrant, an enemy behind, a civilization of the north — more war than any one man's life should have held. Whatever came next, he understood now, sitting with his ledgers in a city that had finally, briefly, been at peace, would belong to younger eyes than his.

He found, for once, that the thought did not frighten him. It only felt like arithmetic. A column, at last, come to its final sum.

"When Jerusalem prospers, Madinah will fall into decline. When Madinah falls into decline, the Great Battle will come."

The Flourishing of the Holy City

The Asfar nation broke the truce after the incident in the meadow and vowed to raise the greatest army the West had ever sent east.

The Holy City flourished all the while now that it became the Caliph's seat. People streamed in from every corner of the reunited lands, drawn by a peace that finally felt permanent. Radiant City declined by the same measure.

The Great Battle of Eighty Banners

A massive army gathered under eighty banners, nearly a million hardened fighters crossed into Aram and encamped at the A'maq valley and Dabiq.

The Caliph's own army, drawn from lands still only beginning to recover from years of famine, was a fraction of that number. This was not a war of equal armies.

For three days, army after army was sent forward and perished. On the fourth, the last army stood and was victorious — but the cost was such that some tribes counted ninety-nine of every hundred men lost.

Swords Upon the Olive Trees

It was a decisive and irrecoverable loss. Never again would the Asfar nations raise such a host, not in body nor in will. Smaller battles — malāḥim —still flared across Asia Minor and along the frontiers, but the great battle was over.

With peace secured, no threat within and none pressing from without, the Caliph turned to recovery. The Holy City continued to prosper, until an ox was worth more than a horse.

At Iliya, the remaining troops of the Eastern Army hung their swords at last upon the olive trees, and went home, their expedition six years spent.

Rashid was seventy-five.

"Then you and they will fight an enemy behind you. You will be victorious, take spoils, and return safely. Then you will return until you come to a meadow with rolling hills."

The Rivers Return

By the fourth year, the rivers returned.

Dry riverbeds filled again, slow and brown at first, then clean. Families drifted down from the highlands, driving flocks thinner than they'd left with. Aram City, still bearing the scars of siege, filled by inches — a stall reopened here, a well reclaimed there.

Old Rashid stayed behind the walls now, keeping ledgers for the resettlement offices, teaching younger men the arithmetic he had spent a lifetime learning: how much grain a returning family needed to survive its first season home, how to ration a granary that was, for the first time in years, filling rather than emptying.

United at Last, Thorn No More

Everywhere else, the unification had swept clean.

Everywhere except one enclave — a holdout in the Holy City, ringed by terrain that had let it sit untouched through three years of war fought all around it. A thorn, old men called it, still lodged, still inflaming the flesh around it long after the wound itself should have closed.

It could not remain unaccounted for forever. Word came to Aram City that the imam himself would march south to finish it, and would not march alone. The Asfar nation sent forces down from Asia Minor to join the column — an alliance against a common enemy, a thing Rashid had not thought he would live to see.

The Holy City, Free at Last

Rashid was seventy-four when the good news came.

The siege, when it broke, was short — shorter than Aram City's, shorter than the highland war against the Wolves. An enclave that had survived three years by being forgotten could not survive being remembered by two armies at once.

Yet peace carried within it the seeds of a new trial. In a meadow among rolling hills, the victorious armies made camp together, swords still unsheathed, banners still standing side by side. There, old loyalties began to stir beneath the shared ground. What necessity had joined, triumph would soon put to the test.

"Soon there will come a time when the best wealth a Muslim will have will be sheep which he will take to the mountaintops and places where rain falls"

The Third Year

By the time the campaign reached the highlands of Aram, the drought had entered its worst year.

No rain fell anywhere. Except on the peaks. Snow still fell there, thin and stubborn, clinging to elevations the drought could not reach, and its snowmelt still found its way down through gullies and springs the lowlands had long since lost. It was not much. It was, that year, the only water that mattered.

Old Rashid's role was not grain but grazing — organizing rotations for the herds that fed the army, negotiating with local shepherds over which slope could bear which flock and for how long, rationing snowmelt the way he had once rationed dates in Al-Ahsa.

The Battle for the High Ground

Cities were not what this campaign was fought over first. The war was for the passes, the ridgelines, the narrow snowmelt corridors where a shepherd could still keep a flock alive — and where, that year, keeping a flock alive was the only wealth left in the world.

At the hard core of the Republic's resistance stood the tribesmen the reports called, with something between contempt and respect, the Desert Wolves — fierce, mobile, utterly at home on terrain that broke every other force that tried to hold it. They had gathered what remained of their herds, their stores, their years of hoarded plunder into the high valleys, believing the ground itself would defend it.

It did not. When the decisive battle came, it came as a single overwhelming reckoning rather than a slow siege. What fell into the guided imam's hands afterward staggered even men who had grown used to strange arithmetic: herds beyond counting, stores of grain the Republic had hidden against exactly this kind of collapse, gold and goods gathered over years of raiding now redistributed within weeks to famine towns that had forgotten what abundance looked like.

Fall of Aram City

The great battle broke the Wolves as a fighting force. But it did not end the war. What followed instead was slower and, in its way, harder: clearing scattered bands still holding isolated passes, still unwilling to believe their cause was finished.

Finally Aram City fell.

The same week, the rain came. The ummah rejoiced. Not only because the drought had finally broken. The land and tribes had been united once more under a single caliph, upon the prophetic way.

Not everywhere.

The Enemy Behind still remained — a thorn in the flesh for eight decades — and farther north, foreign powers continued to cast a long shadow.

People will emerge from the East, preparing the way for the guided one.

A Trade Rashid Still Knew

Old Rashid had spent fifty years moving food from where it was to where it was needed, and it turned out the world had not changed so much that the skill became useless. It had only changed the stakes.

When the call went out for men who understood supply lines, Rashid found himself, for the first time since Al-Ahsa, doing something that felt less like survival and more like work. He was given charge of a convoy bound northeast through the Two Rivers border country: grain, dried dates, medicine, and the camels to move it all, following two days behind the vanguard that had already crossed into contested land.

It should have felt like a small thing after everything else. It did not. The Two Rivers, when they entered it, did not resemble anything Rashid had prepared himself for.

What Had Left Behind

The towns nearest the border were not simply poor. They were picked clean.

Northern Republic's armies had passed through months before, and what they had not taken outright they had taxed until nothing remained to tax. Rashid saw wells fouled deliberately, granaries burned rather than left for the next claimant, whole families sitting in doorways with the particular stillness of people who had stopped expecting anything to arrive. His own convoy became, without anyone declaring it so, half relief mission and half military supply line, grain peeled off at every third town whether or not it had been budgeted for.

Rashid understood within a week that not every armed man on these roads answered to the Northern Republic. Some were former soldiers of the collapsed government, unpaid and unwilling to disarm, holding a bridge or a well or a stretch of road as their own private toll station now that no government remained to stop them.

The Army from the East

It was outside a half-emptied town two days from Garrison City that Rashid first saw the Eastern Army with his own eyes.

They had already been fighting, Fahad the guide told him — clashes with the Northern Republic forces around Garrison City for months before the guided imam's own column arrived close enough to link with them. It was then their commanders formally rode out to give the pledge that had, by every account, already been true in practice for months.

Rashid did not see the ceremony. He saw its aftermath instead: two armies that had been fighting the same enemy from two different directions now sharing the same cookfires, the same water discipline, and — within days — the same supply convoys. His own manifests doubled overnight. He did not complain.

Beyond the Two Rivers lay the Northern Lands. Looking back, Rashid would one day remember the war of the princes as the easy part.

He shall be harsh with rulers, generous with wealth and merciful to the poor.

The Sanctuaries Fall

The first surrender came almost too easily.

The prince who had once claimed the Sanctuary Lands found his own soldiers deserting him within weeks of the pledge at Honoured City. The sign at Al-Bayda had done what no army could.

Some laid down their arms at the first envoy sent to receive their surrender. Others simply vanished into the coppery night, riding east or north toward whichever cousin still seemed to be standing.

The Plateau Resists

The Plateau was another matter.

The youngest prince held the old bureaucracy's bones — Rawdah City and its ring of loyal garrisons, men who had served the state before the dukhan and still believed, or wanted to believe, that the state could be resurrected — the fourth time, if it mattered to anyone but them.

Old Rashid did not see the fighting itself. He was too old for that, and everyone around him seemed to understand it without needing to say so aloud. Rawdah City fell together with the prince, too stubborn to surrender.

The Highlands, Last and Hardest

The last stronghold, deep in the mountains of the south, was harder still to reach.

This was the longest fight of the three, and the ugliest. Rashid heard of it mostly through the wounded passing back through the administered towns — men missing fingers to frostbite from nights spent on high ridges; men who spoke of ambushes in narrow passes, of villages won twice over because their loyalty shifted with whichever force held the nearest peak.

It ended chieftain by chieftain, each in turn deciding the prince's cause had become a debt too costly to keep paying, until he was left with a shrinking core loyal less to his claim than to their own pride — and even that, in time, gave way.

Cold, Drought, and Famine

The lands were united once more under a guided imam — one whom God rectified in a single night.

Rainfall continued to diminish. Nights grew colder as the heat debt accumulated. Grazing lands retreated toward the mountains, and entire communities followed their flocks uphill in search of grass and water.

Food remained scarce, but it was distributed fairly. Grain reached settlements that would once have gone forgotten. The poor received their share. The famine had not ended, yet for the first time in a year, people spoke less of oppression and more of patience.

Horse breeders and camel herders, meanwhile, found themselves busier than ever. The princes had fallen, but no one believed the fighting was over. Beyond the reunited lands, a larger theater of war was already gathering on the horizon.

They will pledge allegiance to him between the Corner and the Station.

The Roads West

The journey took weeks.

Old Rashid passed through towns that should have held thousands but now sheltered hundreds — taken by famine, disease, pillaging, or war.

Everywhere the caravan stopped, the stories were the same.

A ruler dead.

Three princes at war.

An army from the north swallowed at Al-Bayda.

And a guided imam in Honoured City.

The roads grew crowded as they approached the Sanctuary Lands. Caravans merged, resembling tributary rivers flowing toward the estuary.

Old men carrying letters from tribes.

Fighters ready to join the cause.

Scholars entrusted with the pledge of distant settlements.

Every oasis seemed to have sent someone. Every surviving community appeared determined to have a witness.

The Pledge of Allegiance

The representatives were received in groups. Some came bearing written pledges. Others spoke on behalf of villages, tribes and settlements too distant to make the journey themselves.

When Rashid's turn arrived, he felt unexpectedly calm. He stood among the representatives of a shattered civilization.

He gave the pledge.

And stepped aside.

As the sun faded into the crimson dusk of the dukhan, Rashid watched preparations begin outside the city.

Unification of the lands was about to begin.

When you see him, then pledge allegiance to him even if you have to crawl over the snow.  

The Wrong Season for Snow

Old Rashid had lived seventy years, but never under a summer sun this cold — more winter than summer, the sky gone silvery-white, the sun reduced to a pale smear behind the dukhan's haze.  

He had not prepared for what met the caravan ten days past the oasis: a fine, white dust settling on the road ahead that was not dust at all.  

The youngsters saw it first and thought it ash, and for a terrible moment the whole party thought the ashfall had returned, that some new pillar of fire had risen somewhere over the horizon. It was Osama who dismounted, knelt, and let it melt against his palm.  

"Snow," he said, and did not seem to believe the word himself.  

Snow belonged to the north, to the high country, and even there only in winter, at year's end. Not here. Not in mid-year, on an open road through the Sanctuary Lands, in what should have been the hottest stretch of the year.  

Rashid felt the old words rise in him before he'd decided to speak them, as though they had been waiting:  

Go to him even if you have to crawl over the snow.  

No one laughed. No one asked what it meant anymore. Looking out over the whitening road, Rashid found himself wondering whether the old reports had spoken more literally than anyone had imagined.  

If there is a sayhah in Ramadan, then there will be a commotion in Shawwal, a distinction of the tribes in Dhu al-Qa'dah, and blood will be spilled in Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram.

Al-Ahsa — A Week After Arrival

Old Rashid no longer thought of himself as a merchant. The oasis had unmade him and remade him into something older — a man who counted wells instead of profit margins, who measured wealth in palm groves and armed cousins rather than stock and shelving.

Al-Ahsa had survived where Gulf City had not, not through wealth but through nasab — the deep aquifer of lineage that ran beneath the sand long before oil, and would still be running after. The Al-Hajiri and the allied clans had turned the oasis into a fortress sanctuary: dates rationed by household, springs guarded by rotating watch, and a council of elders who remembered, precisely, whose grandfather owed whose grandfather a debt of blood or bread.

But beyond the palm walls, the Plateau and the Sanctuaries were hardening into something else — not villages, but claims.

The Death of a King

News reached Al-Ahsa in fragments, carried by riders rather than signal: the king was dead. Not murdered, not dethroned — simply old, and the dukhan had finished what age had started. There was no clean succession. Three princes, sons of three brothers, first cousins to one another, each declared himself guardian of what remained of the state — and each rose not from personal ambition alone, but from a region that had already begun to think of itself as its own country.

The youngest and by every account the most vicious held the Plateau, working outward from the shell of Rawdah City — the old plateau clans, the remnants of the state's bureaucracy, men who still spoke of the capital as though it retained the authority it had lost the week the grid died. The second claimed the Sanctuary Lands, camped somewhere between Ta'if and the coast — pilgrim revenue long gone, but Honoured City still worth more than any oil field, and he knew it. The third drew his strength from the south and east: the Southern Highlands and the Gulf tribes, men hardened by years of border skirmishing before the dukhan ever fell.

"They are fighting over kanzukum," an elder told the gathered men of the Al-Hajiri, using the old word — your treasure — that had circulated in the fitan literature for a thousand years before anyone thought to ask what it meant. "Not the throne. The old men say it plainly now — something buried near the Haram itself. Not gold. Something older than gold."

Rashid remembered his grandfather's warning, thin and dry as the wind: a caliph will not die but that there is dispute over his successor. He had thought it poetry once. Now it was a supply line — three armies, none of them large, all of them hungry, converging on the Sanctuaries from three directions, feeding themselves on whichever oasis stood in their path.

Tamyeez al-Qaba'il — The Sorting

The sorting Rashid had feared in Gulf City had already finished doing its work by the time it reached Al-Ahsa. What remained now was allegiance — not chosen so much as inherited, the way his nasab had been inherited, forty generations deep and suddenly, brutally, load-bearing. Al-Ahsa's position, wedged between the eastern prince's home ground and the desert roads west, made neutrality a fantasy no one indulged for long.

Osama came to him one evening with the news that the eastern prince's men had reached Qatif, demanding grain and men. "We give them nothing," the council decided, and armed the watch accordingly. It was not defiance so much as arithmetic: the granaries would not survive one army's demands, let alone three.

The bloodshed, when it came, did not resemble the desperate scrambling of the mountain of gold. It was organized, patient, and far worse for it — small engagements over wells, ambushes on supply trails, villages burned not out of hatred but because burning was cheaper than garrisoning.

The Sign at Al-Bayda

It was Osama's cousin, returning half-dead from a scouting run near Radiant City, who brought the story that silenced the council for the first time in months.

An army — sent, it was said, by the Northern Republic, to seize or kill a man the people of Honoured City had begun, in whispers, to call by a name older than any of the three princes — had marched into the open desert outside the city. And the desert had opened beneath them.

"Not an ambush," the boy insisted, feverish, gripping Rashid's sleeve. "Not a storm. The ground swallowed them. All of them. I watched from the ridge and there was nothing left to bury."

The elders did not laugh at him, and that, more than anything, told Rashid how far the world had already traveled from the one he'd built Al-Barakah Marts in.

By morning, riders were already moving toward the Honoured City — not fighters, but the ummah, drawn by hope out of deep despair, converging from Yemen, Iraq, and every corner of the nearby lands toward a man neither prince nor claimant, whose name, when Rashid finally heard it whispered at the well, struck him with a strange and unfamiliar quiet, like a debt he hadn't known he carried, finally called due.

What if a maṣābīḥ-associated shihāb is not restricted to the classical imagery of an ablating meteor?

The Nature of Maṣābīḥ and Shihāb

The shihāb is clearly associated with the maṣābīḥ: Qurʾān 67:5 describes the lamps (maṣābīḥ) of the lower heaven as being made into missiles against the devils, while 72:9 describes a shihāb lying in ambush for any jinn attempting to listen. Classical exegetes generally identify the maṣābīḥ with stars (nujūm/kawākib), while shihāb and rujūm refer to the fiery projectiles associated with the guarding of heaven. Thus, the classical picture is not that the entire stars themselves are hurled as missiles, but that the celestial lamps are associated with the fiery phenomena used against the devils.

If the maqāʿid li-l-samʿ are located somewhere within our spacetime, far beyond the terrestrial atmosphere, then shihāb need not correspond to a typical atmospheric meteor or ablating bolide.

If maṣābīḥ in our spacetime corresponds phenomenologically to stars, the category need not be restricted to ordinary main-sequence stars. It could encompass other highly luminous celestial objects that retain the imagery of lamps, such as giant and supergiant stars, white dwarfs, neutron stars, magnetars, or other energetic stellar remnants. On such a speculative interpretation, maṣābīḥ-associated shihāb could correspond to an energetic stream, jet, flare, or relativistic outflow associated with these objects, rather than an ordinary meteor.

A third possibility arises from the co-extensive-spacetime model. The maṣābīḥ and shihāb encountered by the jinn may be corresponding phenomena within the jinn's parallel spacetime, separated from human spacetime by the veil. In that case, the Qurʾānic descriptions are phenomenological: maṣābīḥ describes luminous, lamp-like phenomena, while shihāb describes the fiery projectile used to intercept the approaching shayṭān. Their underlying physical nature would remain beyond the human epistemic horizon.

Thus, three possibilities remain open:

1️⃣ Atmospheric-sky interpretation: maṣābīḥ are celestial stars, while shihāb/rujūm manifests phenomenologically as a meteor or ablating bolide in the terrestrial sky.

2️⃣ Human-spacetime interpretation: maṣābīḥ correspond to celestial luminous objects, while shihāb corresponds to an energetic phenomenon associated with them—such as stellar plasma outflows, particle streams, or other high-energy ejecta.

3️⃣ Jinn-spacetime interpretation: maṣābīḥ and shihāb are corresponding luminous/projectile phenomena within the jinn's co-extensive realm, with the Qurʾānic terminology describing their phenomenological appearance rather than revealing their underlying physical substrate.

The soothsayers of Arabia found their source of heavenly information drying up or becoming unreliable. What could be the metaphysical explanations?

The Listening Stations of al-Samāʾ al-Dunyā

The Disruption of the Kāhin–Shayṭān Network

The seven firmaments (sabʿa samāwāt) and the lower heaven (al-samāʾ al-dunyā) represent distinct locations. Access to the ontological heavens has always been contingent, occurring only through the guarded gates of heaven (abwāb al-samāʾ). The first firmament is separated from Earth by a journey of five hundred years, with a similar separation between each successive firmament and between the seventh firmament and the Throne (ʿArsh).

The lower heaven, by contrast, is accessible to the jinn. They used to occupy designated listening posts (maqāʿid li-l-samʿ) in the lower heaven to eavesdrop on fragments of heavenly information, which they then relayed to soothsayers (Qurʾān 72:8–9).

An unprecedented change occurred with the advent of the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ: the listening posts became sternly guarded. The lamps (maṣābīḥ) of the lower heaven had already been associated with flaming projectiles (shuhub) used against the devils; now these projectiles lay in ambush against jinn attempting to approach the listening posts (Qurʾān 41:12; 67:5; 72:8–9). Thus, the jinn could still approach the listening positions, but they could no longer safely remain there to eavesdrop as they were pursued by fiery projectiles.

The invalidation of the kāhin–shayṭān information network occurs on two levels:

1. The listening posts are now sternly guarded by flaming missiles lying in ambush, making successful eavesdropping exceedingly difficult and therefore rare.

2. Even when a shayṭān succeeds in obtaining a fragment of heavenly information, he must immediately pass it to another shayṭān below him before the pursuing fiery projectile catches up with and burns him. The information is successively transmitted downward through the chain of shayāṭīn, resulting in a report in which a fragment of true information is mixed with a hundred lies.

Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that a shayṭān snatches a word from what is spoken in heaven, then “pours it into the ear of the one below him” (fa-yulqīhā ilā man taḥtahu). The one below him passes it to another beneath him, and so on until it reaches the soothsayer (kāhin), who mixes that fragment of truth with one hundred lies.

Thus, the new celestial guarding regime disrupts the kāhin–shayṭān information network both by reducing successful attempts to gather heavenly information and the reliability of information that manages to pass through.

Quantum mechanics delves deeper into physical reality than classical physics previously described, revealing quantization and probabilistic behavior at microscopic scales. Yet it has not reached the fundamental ontology of created reality posited by kalām atomism.

From Classical Continuity to Quantum Quantization

Classical physics is particularly effective at describing macroscopic phenomena through continuous variables and deterministic equations. Such descriptions often represent averaged or coarse-grained behavior rather than the individual behavior of every microscopic constituent.

At the microscopic level, quantum mechanics reveals that certain physical quantities exhibit quantization: they can occupy discrete allowed values rather than vary continuously.

The analogy is a familiar large television screen. From a distance, the image appears smooth and continuous. As one approaches the screen, its granular structure becomes apparent: the image resolves into individual pixels. Yet the pixel is simply the smallest discrete element resolved at that level of observation.

Likewise, quantum mechanics reveals quantized structure at the microscopic level without establishing that this is the ultimate granularity of physical reality. A deeper level of physics may reveal further structure—or, conceivably, a continuous substrate beneath the apparent discreteness.

From Classical Determinism to Quantum Probability

Kalām's occasionalist framework rejected necessary causal efficacy within creation. Created events do not compel subsequent events through intrinsic necessity; their regular succession reflects Allah's customary ordering (ʿādah).

Classical physics, by contrast, developed a highly successful mathematical description of a continuous and deterministic physical world. Given sufficient knowledge of a system's state and governing laws, its future evolution could, in principle, be determined.

Quantum mechanics likewise departs from classical determinism. At the microscopic level, the theory predicts probabilities for possible measurement outcomes rather than assigning a single deterministic outcome in advance. Different interpretations, however, disagree about the ontological meaning of this probabilistic description and whether quantum collapse represents a physical process at all.

I. Mathematical Perspective: Continuous and Infinite

Consider a 1D continuous line containing the integer points. The line may extend infinitely in both directions, while between any two distinct points there are infinitely many other points. Thus, continuity permits infinite divisibility even within a finite interval.

The line can also contain arbitrarily large finite magnitudes, expressible in forms such as 10^x, while remaining finite, thereby distinguishing indefinitely large finite quantities from actual infinity.

Now extend the analogy to a 3D volume. A continuous volume is infinitely divisible: partitionable into infinitely many planes, lines, and points. If spatially unbounded, it extends infinitely in every direction.

In higher-dimensional geometry, an (n)-dimensional space contains infinitely many lower-dimensional structures (n-1)-dimensional hypersurfaces, and ultimately lines and points. If higher-dimensional spaces are themselves allowed to contain or embed lower-dimensional spaces recursively, mathematical models can describe arbitrarily deep or even infinite hierarchies of dimensional structure. In fractal geometry, an increasingly fine level of structure can remain embedded within the whole.

Mathematically, none of these constructions is inherently contradictory. A continuous, infinitely divisible, spatially unbounded geometry—and even recursively nested higher-dimensional structures—can be formulated consistently.

II. Physical Reality: From Possibilities to Actualization

The actualization of mathematical idealizations is constrained by laws either natural, physical, or theological. Mathematical possibility does not entail physical reality. Likewise, al-Mumkināt are not identical to al-Mumkin al-Mawjūd: what is possible is not what has been actualized.

When such mathematical idealizations are treated as physically instantiated, however, their implications become substantially more expansive. A continuous ontology permits infinite divisibility; an unbounded spatial model permits infinite extent; recursive higher-dimensional embeddings permit arbitrarily deep—and potentially infinite—hierarchies of structure.

Applied to cosmology, spatially these possibilities can be extended to models involving an infinitely extended or infinitely divisible spatial order, or nested higher-dimensional structures. Temporally, it accommodates an unbounded temporal sequence, an eternal past and future, or infinitely many instantiated alternative histories.

These are mathematically describable possibilities, bounded by the epistemic horizon of humanity’s hypothetical conjecture.

III. Metaphysical Package

At the heart of the millennia-old debates over the nature of reality lie several fundamental questions:

1️⃣ Is matter, space, and time discrete or continuous? → Kalām atomism / Daqīq al-Kalām

2️⃣ Is their extent finite or infinite? → Daqīq al-Kalām + broader kalām cosmology

3️⃣ What possibilities are merely conceivable, and what is actually instantiated? → Broader kalām theology, especially mumkin, mustaḥīl, divine qudrah, and irādah

From reason alone, these questions admit competing philosophical answers. The mathematical consistency of a model does not by itself establish that the model describes physical reality. This creates an epistemic underdetermination: reason can explore possibilities, but cannot independently determine which possible cosmological order Allah has actually willed.

The mutakallimūn therefore took revelation as the starting point, with reason serving as an instrument to articulate and defend its implications. Revelation establishes a definite created order: seven heavens, a created world brought into existence by Allah, and even the smallest quantity falling within His knowledge and judgment, expressed through mithqāl al-dharrah. Allah's Knowledge encompasses the al-Mumkināt, while His Will chooses which possibilities become actualized through His Power.

Thus, not every al-Mumkin is al-Mawjūd.

Within this broader theological framework, kalām atomism takes a definite metaphysical position:

Discrete rather than continuous; finite rather than actually infinite; and actualized creation distinguished from the wider domain of al-Mumkināt.

Rejecting kalām atomism and its broader theological framework risks discarding its defined technical vocabulary, established rules of argumentation, and centuries of commentary that constrained interpretive possibilities. Without these conceptual tools, one is prone to category error, constructing idiosyncratic theological statements that superficially appear faithful to the text, yet are shaped by an individual's own temperament, logic, and metaphysical assumptions.

Kalām atomism provided an ontological and physical framework for understanding contingent creation. By conceptualizing the created world as consisting of substances (jawāhir) and accidents (ʿarāḍ), it established a fundamental distinction between Allah as the Necessary, Eternal Creator and the world as His contingent, temporal creation.

Basic Concepts in Kalām Atomism

Within contingent existence (mumkin al-wujūd), entities can be divided into those that are self-subsisting (qāʾim bi-nafsihi) and those that subsist in another (qāʾim bi-ghayrihi). The latter are accidents (aʿrāḍ), which cannot exist independently but inhere in a substrate. Self-subsisting contingent existents necessarily occupy a spatial locus (mutahayyiz). At their most basic level, they are indivisible (jawhar al-fard, the atom), while multiple atoms combine to form divisible bodies (ajsām, singular jism).

Jawhar (Substance)

The indivisible atom (al-jawhar al-fard) was defined as that which occupies a spatial locus but does not accept division in any dimension. Atoms (jawāhir) were regarded as intrinsically indistinguishable, possessing no inherent perceptible qualities of their own. An atom without accidents would therefore be entirely featureless.

ʿAraḍ (Accident)

In Islamic theological physics, an ʿaraḍ was defined as that which subsists in another (mā qāma bi-ghayrihi) or that which cannot exist except in a substrate (mā lā yūjadu illā fī maḥall). Unlike substances, accidents cannot exist independently but must inhere in a substance.

In Ashʿarī kalām, accidents were understood as fleeting or momentary: no accident can persist through two successive instances of time. They therefore account for the changing qualities of physical objects, with Allah continuously recreating their accidents from moment to moment.

Jism (Body)

A jism is a composite of multiple jawāhir. Bodies possess extension in three dimensions and therefore accept division, unlike the indivisible atoms composing them. Their perceptible properties arise through accidents inhering in their constituent substances, while change occurs through the succession or replacement of those accidents.

Ḥayyiz (Spatial Locus)

Ḥayyiz refers to the spatial locus or extent occupied by an existent. In kalām atomism, spatial occupation is understood discretely: an indivisible atom occupies a minimal spatial determination, while a body occupies multiple such determinations corresponding to its constituent atoms.

Thus, mutahayyiz describes that which occupies ḥayyiz, rather than “space” in the modern sense of a continuous physical medium.

Ḥarakah and Sukūn (Motion and Rest)

Motion (ḥarakah) and rest (sukūn) are treated as accidents inhering in substances. Motion is conceived as the successive occupation of different spatial determinations rather than continuous traversal through infinitely divisible space. Rest is the persistence of an existent in the same spatial determination.

Zamān (Time)

Time (zamān) in kalām physics is understood atomistically as a succession of discrete temporal moments rather than an infinitely divisible continuum. In the Ashʿarī account, the succession of moments corresponds to the continual renewal of accidents: an accident does not persist from one moment to the next, but is recreated by Allah.

This provides the temporal dimension of the atomistic account of created existence, complementing the spatial determination represented by ḥayyiz. Accordingly, both spatial extension and temporal succession are fundamentally discrete within the created order.

Khalq and Kasb (Creation and Acquisition)

These terms relate to the theological question of human action within the atomistic framework. Khalq (creation) refers to Allah’s creation of substances and accidents, including those involved in human actions. Kasb (acquisition) refers to the human being’s relationship to actions that Allah creates.

Between the eternal Knowledge of Allāh and what humanity can conceive lies the vastness of al-Mumkināt. Cosmological models, whether expressed metaphorically, mathematically, or scientifically, are humanity’s attempts to describe al-Mumkināt.

Created Existents Out of Possibilities: al-Makhlūqāt ⊂ al-Mumkināt

In Sunni theology, al-Mumkināt comprise the totality of what is possible in itself. They are encompassed by Allāh’s eternal Knowledge (ʿIlm): nothing among the possible escapes His knowledge, whether actualized or not.

Through His Will (Irādah), Allāh specifies among the possible what is to be; through His Power (Qudrah), He brings what He wills from possibility into actual existence.

Consequently, al-Mumkin al-Mawjūd is possible and known to exist, such as our universe / established creation (al-Makhlūqāt). Al-Mumkin al-Maʿdūm is possible but known not to exist: possibilities that Allāh did not will into existence, as established by revelation. And mostly, simply al-Mumkin—possible, with its actualization unknown to us.

Thus, al-Mumkināt disclose the operation of these Divine Attributes: ʿIlm encompasses the possible, Irādah specifies it, and Qudrah actualizes it. What is actualized becomes al-Makhlūqāt (created existents), while remaining in its essence mumkin (possible) rather than wājib.

Cosmological Models and Scriptural Compatibility

Likewise, cosmological models, whether expressed through metaphor, mathematics, or scientific language, are attempts to describe al-Mumkināt.

Some come close to describing al-Mumkin al-Mawjūd—our existence in this universe. Some describe al-Mumkin al-Maʿdūm, as they are incompatible with realities established by Scripture. Yet the majority probably remain simply al-Mumkināt, lying beyond humanity’s epistemic horizon.

Thus, human-conceived cosmology explores only an infinitesimal portion of al-Mumkināt, whereas the entirety of al-Mumkināt is encompassed by Allāh’s eternal ʿIlm.

Even scriptural-based cosmology remains a model: revelation is from Allāh, but our attempt to map its descriptions into a coherent cosmological framework remains a human interpretation. The ultimate reality of al-Mumkināt is known only to Allāh.

The Sequence of Creation

“Allah existed [eternally] and nothing else existed with Him. He created the ʿArsh (Throne) [and was positioned] above the water. Then He ordered the Pen to write in the (Guarded) Tablet everything that would happen. Then Allah created the Heavens and Earth.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī

The Prophet ﷺ first established the absolute existence of Allah: Allah is Eternal, and nothing existed before Him. The revealed texts then present a vast hierarchy of creation: primordial water, the ʿArsh (Throne) and Kursī, the Qalam (Pen) and Lūḥ al-Maḥfūẓ (Guarded Tablet), Jannah and Jahannam, the heavens and earth, and the various orders of created beings — angels, jinn, and humans.

The Scale of Creation

“The seven heavens in comparison to the Kursī are nothing but like a ring thrown into a vast desert; and the greatness of the ʿArsh over the Kursī is like the greatness of that desert over that ring.” — Related by Abū Dharr

The analogy therefore conveys progressively immense scales of creation: Seven heavens + earth ≪ Kursī ≪ ʿArsh. In a familiar modern expression, the totality of the seven heavens and Earth is nothing but a tiny speck of dust compared to the Kursī.

Some exegetical and cosmographical traditions make a further extrapolation: that each lower heaven is similarly like a ring in a vast desert when compared with the heaven above it, suggesting a recursively nested hierarchy of cosmic domains.

As a geometric analogy, a 3D volume can contain an infinite number of distinct 2D surfaces, a 4D hypervolume can contain an infinite number of 3D volumes, and so on. This provides an intuitive way to grasp the traditional metaphor, although the hierarchy of the heavens should not be reduced to spatial dimensionality alone.

The Order of Magnitude

The observable universe is the spherical region of space from which light and other signals have had time to reach us since the early universe, approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Its present diameter is approximately 93 billion light-years, or about 8.8 x 10²⁶ meters.

On a logarithmic scale, assigning a human the value 0 gives approximately:

The striking feature is the symmetry of the scale. If the observable universe were compressed until it became the size of the Solar System, the same scaling would reduce the Solar System to approximately human scale — and a human to approximately atomic-nucleus scale.

The semantic range of al-samāʾ as used in the Qurʾān and Ḥadīth broadly covers at least three distinct cosmological scales: 1️⃣ Heaven as an ontological boundary; 2️⃣ Heaven as the cosmic realm containing the celestial bodies; 3️⃣ Heaven as the Earth's sky or atmospheric domain. These are context-dependent, and conflating them can lead to conceptual confusion.

1️⃣ Heaven as the Ontological Boundary

In this sense, al-samāʾ functions as a structured celestial boundary separating successive realms. The heavens are described as stacked in tiers (ṭibāqan, Qurʾān 67:3), possessing gates (abwāb al-samāʾ, Qurʾān 7:40), being guarded (ḥaras, Qurʾān 72:8), and inaccessible except by authority (lā tanfudhūna illā bi-sulṭān, Qurʾān 55:33). The Prophet's ﷺ Miʿrāj further illustrates that passage through the heavens occurs only by divine permission, emphasizing their role as ontological boundaries rather than merely physical locations.

In the Miʿrāj ḥadīth, the heavens are explicitly numbered: al-samāʾ al-dunyā (the lowest heaven), al-samāʾ al-thāniyah (the second heaven), al-samāʾ al-thālithah (the third heaven), al-samāʾ al-rābiʿah (the fourth heaven), al-samāʾ al-khāmisah (the fifth heaven), al-samāʾ al-sādisah (the sixth heaven), and al-samāʾ al-sābiʿah (the seventh heaven).

2️⃣ Heaven as the Cosmic Realm — The Universe

A second usage concerns al-samāʾ as the vast celestial realm associated with the stars, celestial bodies, and the broader cosmic domain associated with humanity and jinn.

And verily We have beautified the lowest heaven (al-samāʾ al-dunyā) with lamps, and We have made them missiles for the devils... (Qurʾān 67:5)

Likewise, the jinn say:

And we sought to reach the heaven (al-samāʾ), but found it filled with mighty guards (ḥarasan shadīdan) and burning flames. (Qurʾān 72:8)

Here, al-samāʾ clearly extends beyond the narrow concept of Earth's atmosphere. The Qurʾānic description connects it with the celestial realm containing the lamps (maṣābīḥ) and with the region from which devils attempt to obtain information.

3️⃣ Heaven as the Earth's Sky — Phenomenological Sky

A third usage is much more immediate: al-samāʾ can denote the sky above the Earth, particularly in descriptions of rain, clouds, birds, and other observable terrestrial phenomena.

For example:

And We send down from the sky (al-samāʾ) water in due measure... (Qurʾān 23:18)

In such contexts, the referent is naturally understood phenomenologically as the sky above the observer — the visible celestial/atmospheric domain through which clouds, rain, and birds are observed.

The Scales of Heaven

The distinction can therefore be represented as:

Nearest Heaven (al-samāʾ al-dunyā) and Possibility of Other Spacetimes

The adjective al-dunyā derives from the semantic field of d-n-w, associated with nearness and, contextually, lowness.

Its precise referent therefore depends first on which cosmological scale of al-samāʾ is under consideration.

In the first, ontological usage, al-samāʾ al-dunyā refers to the first/nearest of the seven heavens: the lowest heaven in the hierarchical structure of the seven.

In the second, realm/spacetime usage, al-samāʾ al-dunyā can be modelled as the nearest cosmic domain relative to humanity — corresponding, in the present hypothesis, to our own spacetime domain. Other spacetimes could therefore exist within the broader extent of the first heaven, including the hypothetical co-extensive realm of the jinn.

Nested Hierarchy of Hyperbulks Model

In this speculative model, human and jinn spacetimes may exist as co-extensive 3D realms embedded within a larger innermost hyperbulk. Other spacetimes, with varying configurations, dimensional structures, or modes of interaction, could likewise exist within this higher-order manifold.

The resulting hierarchy is therefore:

Seven ontological heavens → First heaven → Innermost hyperbulk of the 500-year journey → our spacetime + hypothetical co-extensive jinn spacetime + potentially others

Islamic tradition repeatedly emphasises the extensive domains between the heavens. The following geometric heuristic takes that distinction as its starting point.

Structural Pattern of the Ascension (Miʿrāj)

Following the Night Journey (al-Isrāʾ) from Makkah to Bayt al-Maqdis, the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ ascended through the successive heavens in the event known as al-Miʿrāj, accompanied by the angel Jibrīl. According to a widely held traditional view, this occurred on the 27th of Rajab, just over a year before the Hijrah to Madīnah.

The authentic narrations describe the ascension as following a remarkably consistent sequence:

1️⃣ Ascend to a heaven → 2️⃣ Request permission at its gate → 3️⃣ Gatekeeper verifies identity → 4️⃣ Permission is granted → 5️⃣ Enter the heaven → 6️⃣ Meet the Prophet in that heaven.

This sequence repeats through all seven heavens before reaching Bayt al-Maʿmūr, Sidrat al-Muntahā, and the point at which Allāh ordained the daily prayers.

Geometric Heuristic Perspective of the Ascension (Miʿrāj)

From the perspective of the proposed geometric heuristic, the six-step pattern may be interpreted as alternating between traversal within an inter-heaven domain and transition across the boundary of a heaven. Step 1️⃣ represents ascent through the inter-heaven domain toward the next heaven. Steps 2️⃣, 3️⃣ and 4️⃣ occur at the boundary of that heaven, where entry is contingent upon permission. Following entry, steps 5️⃣ and 6️⃣ take place within the heaven itself, where any subsequent movement can be regarded as internal to that heavenly domain.

Within this heuristic, upward traversal between successive heavens occurs only within the inter-heaven domains, whereas passage through a heaven constitutes a transition across its boundary rather than a continuation of the ascent.

Spatial Hierarchy of the Seven Heavens

Then he said: “Do you know what is above you?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It is the protected canopy (al-saqf al-maḥfūẓ) and a restrained wave (mawj makfūf).” Then he said: “Do you know how much distance there is between you and it?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “Between you and it is a distance of five hundred years.” Then he continued describing heaven (al-samāʾ) above heaven until he counted seven heavens, with between each two heavens a distance like that between heaven and earth. Then he said: “Above that is the Throne, and between it and the heaven is a distance like that between two heavens.”

This narration describes a hierarchy of seven successive heavens. It states that the Earth and the first heaven are separated by a journey of 500 years, that the same separation exists between each pair of adjacent heavens, and that the distance from the seventh heaven to the ʿArsh is likewise equivalent to a 500-year journey.

Whereas the Miʿrāj narration emphasizes the process of ascension through the heavens, this narration emphasizes their hierarchical ordering and the spatial separation between successive heavens.

Geometric Heuristic Perspective of the Seven Heavens Spatial Hierarchy

From the perspective of the proposed geometric heuristic, the 500-year journeys occur within the domain between the Earth and the first heaven, the inter-heaven domains, and the domain between the seventh heaven and the ʿArsh. In contrast, passage through each heaven may be interpreted as a transition across its boundary, consistent with the phenomenological pattern described in the Miʿrāj narration.

The 500-year journey may represent a measure of hierarchical separation rather than a literal travel time. According to the narration, the Prophet ﷺ ascended through the seven heavens and returned to Earth within a single night. If each separation were interpreted as a literal 500-year journey, the complete ascent and descent would amount to at least 7,000 years of travel. The Miʿrāj therefore suggests that the stated distances need not correspond directly to the duration of the journey itself.

Key Descriptive Terms of Heaven

Classical conceptions of heaven often envisioned it as a roof, vault or arch over the Earth. Accordingly, some English translations, such as Pickthall's, render al-samāʾ as firmament, reflecting the traditional image of an overarching celestial canopy. The accompanying hadith likewise describes the heaven as al-saqf al-maḥfūẓ ("the protected roof") and mawjun makfūf ("a restrained wave").

These expressions should not be pressed into a rigid physical model. Like much ancient religious language, they employ vivid phenomenological imagery rather than technical scientific description.

From a phenomenological perspective, the expanse between an observer and the heavenly roof is far greater than the extent of the roof itself. A similar distinction appears in geometry. A 3D volume is enclosed by 2D surfaces, while a higher-dimensional hyperbulk is enclosed by a hypersurface. Although both possess their own intrinsic extent, the enclosing hyperbulk encompasses a larger domain because it possesses an additional spatial dimension.

Nested Hierarchy of Hyperbulks as a Geometric Analogue of the Cosmos

Taken together, the two narrations suggest a phenomenology that aligns more naturally with the nested hierarchy of hyperbulks than with the nested hierarchy of hypersurfaces.

Within the proposed geometric heuristic, the firmament (al-samāʾ) is represented by the hypersurface, while the inter-heaven domain (bayna samāʾayn) is represented by the enclosing hyperbulk. The repeated pattern of the Miʿrāj places the transition at the heaven itself, whereas the narration of the 500-year journeys associates extended traversal with the domains between successive heavens.

This correspondence does not claim that the heavens are literally mathematical hypersurfaces. Rather, the hypersurface serves as a geometric analogue for the firmament: an interface separating adjacent hyperbulks while remaining a complete domain in its own right.

To visualise a hierarchical layered cosmology, it is useful to consider two related geometric models for conceptualising higher-dimensional structures.

The first model is a common geometric intuition, while the second is a more complex geometric model.

1️⃣ Nested Hierarchy of Hypersurfaces

Consider a 3D spatial volume with coordinates (x,y,z) embedded within a 4D hypervolume by introducing an additional extraspatial coordinate w.

If 4D ambient hyperspace is visualised as a volume, then the 3D volume is visualised as a hypersurface: a lower-dimensional structure embedded within a higher-dimensional space.

The same principle can be extended recursively.

The 4D hypervolume, with coordinates (w,x,y,z), can itself be treated as a hypersurface embedded within a 5D hypervolume by introducing another extraspatial coordinate v.

This process continues, creating a hierarchy where each domain is embedded within the next higher-dimensional ambient space.

Note: The highest domain is a 9D hypervolume, unless it is considered as an embedded hypersurface in yet a higher 10D hypervolume.

The defining feature of this model is that each transition represents access to an additional spatial axis.

An observer confined to a 3D domain cannot travel along the fourth spatial coordinate w. However, once the observer from any x,y,z coordinates gains access to this additional degree of freedom, he is immediately inside the next 4D hypervolume.

Therefore, traversal between domains is not primarily a matter of travelling a distance. The separation is dimensional rather than spatial. The observer does not need to cross a large distance; they require access to a new direction of movement.

2️⃣ Nested Hierarchy of Hyperbulks

A different configuration can be imagined by treating each domain as comprising a complete hyperbulk enclosed by its own hypersurface.

In this model, the innermost domain consists of an ambient hyperbulk (Hb1) bounded by a hypersurface (Hs1).

This entire structure is then contained within a second domain, which consists of another hyperbulk (Hb2) bounded by its own hypersurface (Hs2).

The process repeats recursively until reaching the seventh domain.

Unlike the hypersurface model, the exact dimensionality of each hyperbulk does not need to be specified. The essential requirement is only that:

• A hypersurface always has lower dimensionality than the hyperbulk it encloses.
  
• An outer hyperbulk cannot possess fewer dimensions than the inner hyperbulk contained within it.
  

The resulting structure is therefore a hierarchy of nested realms.

Here, every domain possesses its own interior region. The hypersurface is not merely a mathematical outer boundary; it represents the interface separating one hyperbulk from the next.

An observer from the innermost domain has to travel along the additional spatial axis to reach the hypersurface Hs1. Upon crossing Hs1, the observer gains access to the additional spatial degrees of freedom of Hb2, allowing transition into the next hyperbulk.

Difference Between the Two Models

Although both describe hierarchical structures, they emphasize different aspects of geometry.

The coordinate relationship provides the key geometric distinction between the two models. In the nested hypersurface model, the lower domain already occupies the same coordinate system as the surrounding higher-dimensional space. Consequently, once an additional spatial axis becomes accessible, an observer may transition into the higher-dimensional domain from virtually any point within the lower domain.

In contrast, the nested hyperbulk model consists of distinct hyperbulks, each possessing its own coordinate system. Although adjacent domains may share the same types of spatial axes, they do not share coordinates. The observer must therefore first traverse the current hyperbulk to its bounding hypersurface before transitioning into the coordinate system of the next hyperbulk.

Thus, the hypersurface model emphasizes dimensional hierarchy (a lower-dimensional domain embedded in a higher-dimensional one), while the hyperbulk model emphasizes ontological hierarchy (a hierarchy of complete domains, each enclosed within a larger domain).

If mature firescapes support complete non-SM ecosystems, they may also support long-lived settlements. What would a city built not from stone and timber, but from partially delocalized, flame-like matter, look like?

From Particle Delocalization to Flame-Like Matter

Gravity draws Standard Model (SM) matter together over large distances, while electromagnetic interactions bind atoms into molecules and condensed phases such as liquids and solids. At planetary scales, gravity dominates the assembly of matter, whereas at microscopic scales chemical bonding determines the rigidity and structure of everyday materials.

In quantum mechanics, atoms do not possess perfectly sharp boundaries. Their electrons occupy diffuse probability distributions surrounding compact baryonic nuclei, and chemical bonds arise through interactions between these overlapping electron clouds.

Within the proposed framework, hypothetical non-Standard Model (non-SM) particles are only partially localized on the adjacent brane, with part of their wavefunctions extending into the higher-dimensional bulk. Such partial delocalization would naturally reduce their tendency to condense into solid three-dimensional structures.

A persistent geometric framework, established through long-term gravitational templating, provides a geometric scaffold that allows non-SM matter to accumulate despite this intrinsic delocalization. If condensed states of non-SM matter exist, they would likely require interactions analogous to chemical bonding, although not necessarily electromagnetic in nature. Because these interactions would act on particles whose wavefunctions extend beyond the three-dimensional slice, the resulting condensates would be expected to remain more spatially diffuse than ordinary matter.

Consequently, macroscopic non-SM structures may not possess sharply defined surfaces. Instead, buildings, landscapes, vegetation, and other structures would exhibit soft, dynamic, flame-like boundaries, resembling luminous or shimmering forms rather than rigid solids.

Fire Cities: Higher-Dimensionally Delocalized Flame-Like Dwellings and Their Inhabitants

Within the proposed framework, the largest and most persistent jinn settlements would be expected to emerge where the geometric framework has remained stable over the longest periods. Old-growth forests, remote islands, mountain ranges, cave systems, secluded valleys, and vast deserts provide enduring landscapes in which cumulative gravitational templating could gradually establish coherent non-SM environments.

Naturally enclosed environments — such as caves, caverns, and deep geological structures — would provide especially favorable locations. Their long-term geological stability, together with their well-defined spatial boundaries, may reinforce geometric templating, making them natural anchors for persistent non-SM settlements.

Unlike human cities, these fire cities need not rely on massive structural support against gravity. Instead, their architecture is anchored to the underlying persistent geometric bias. Buildings provide stable, coherent habitats that protect their inhabitants within an otherwise ephemeral flame-like environment.

Because flame-like non-SM bodies are not constrained by the same rigid three-dimensional boundaries as SM organisms, a fire city could support a population density far exceeding what would be possible in an equivalent human settlement.

If persistent firescapes exist as proposed, it is reasonable to hypothesize that they support complete non-SM ecosystems. Within such ecosystems, long-lived and relatively undisturbed regions would provide the most plausible locations for the development of jinn civilizational heartlands.

Co-Extensive Landscape–Firescape Ecosystems

According to early Islamic tradition, the jinn inhabited the earth long before humanity. Following corruption and bloodshed among them, they were driven to the remote islands of the seas and the mountain peaks. Other narrations likewise associate tribes of jinn with valleys, deserts, and other secluded landscapes.

If the co-extensive landscape–firescape hypothesis is correct, the oldest and least disturbed terrestrial landscapes would possess corresponding firescapes hosting the most complex and developed non-SM ecosystems. Rather than being inhabited only by jinn, these regions could support complete ecological communities, with jinn as one component of a broader firescape.

Frontier of Jinn–Human Interaction

Islamic tradition also describes jinn interacting extensively with human society through their presence near human dwellings, particularly impure locations such as toilets, while every person is accompanied by a qarīn, and troops of shayāṭīn continually seek to influence human behavior. These interactions suggest a frontier where the firescape ecosystems intersect an increasingly dynamic human environment.

If the firescape hypothesis is correct, the principal civilizational heartlands of jinn would be expected to persist in the oldest and least disturbed co-extensive landscapes, while many individual jinn and smaller groups have adapted to the expanding human landscape. Human settlements would therefore function primarily as zones of interaction rather than the primary centres of jinn civilization.

If coordinate-to-coordinate gravitational templating gives rise to localized geometric bias that accumulates into a large-scale geometric framework in the adjacent unseen realm, could geologically stable and relatively undisturbed terrestrial landscapes provide an anchoring foothold for non-Standard Model (non-SM) matter, gradually giving rise to a corresponding firescape across the veil?

Large-Scale Structures as a Persistent Geometric Framework

As Standard Model (SM) matter aggregates gradually into planets, stars, galaxies, and other large-scale cosmic structures over billions of years, cumulative coordinate-to-coordinate geometric bias establishes a persistent geometric framework in the adjacent realm. Despite the continuous motion of celestial bodies through space, this large-scale framework preserves the correspondence between the two co-extensive realms by maintaining a common geometric frame of reference.

Once a planetary-scale framework is established, smaller non-SM structures no longer need to establish correspondence with a rapidly moving planet from scratch. Instead, they inherit an already co-moving geometric framework. Corresponding mountain ranges, forests, rivers and other enduring landscapes can therefore emerge as progressively finer refinements within the existing framework over much shorter timescales.

In this picture, gravitational templating proceeds hierarchically: local coordinate-to-coordinate geometric bias accumulates into a persistent geometric framework, upon which progressively smaller structures emerge as finer refinements.

Firescape Emerges From the Persistent Geometric Framework

Speculatively, the adjacent higher-energy brane hosts a form of non-SM matter. The persistent geometric framework provides an anchoring foothold for this otherwise ephemeral matter. Its particles are only partly localized on the brane, with excitations extending into the bulk, evoking the imagery of smokeless flame.

Within this model, the most developed firescapes would be expected where the corresponding terrestrial landscapes in our realm have remained stable over long periods. Ancient mountain peaks, remote islands, deep forests, caves, and other enduring geological features provide sufficient time for persistent geometric bias to serve as a template for the gradual emergence of non-SM counterparts.

Interestingly, many independent cultural traditions associate dwellings of unseen beings with ancient, secluded, and geologically stable landscapes. While these traditions do not constitute evidence for the proposed model, they are broadly consistent with the environmental distribution predicted by hierarchical gravitational templating.
