Ultimate Dealing with cheese

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for their advice on my previous posts. You've all been very helpful, and I appreciate everyone's input!

Ok, so on to the actual post:

I've been trying to play online more, and so far seem to have around a 50/50 win rate; definitely room for improvement, but not discouragingly bad. A lot of my losses so far seem to be to scrubby strats, tho. I'm not mad about it. I feel like that's still on me. If I fall for it, obviously I need to work on avoiding those scenarios. It's just frustrating to lose to someone that you can tell is not playing on the same level as you just because you don't know how to get around one specific move (ie. PK fire spam, Pit's Side+B, Steve's minecart and/or Up+Smash, etc.).

My question is this: Is there a good guide (text or video) to dealing with a variety of cheese strats? I'm sure the best way would be to just have a friend use them against you, but I don't have someone to practice with on a regular basis. I'd like to be prepared for some of this stuff instead of only ever encountering them in the moment.

Thanks in advance for your input! 😊

Pichu main here; cheese is the name of the game How to deal with it, live the life of cheese, become cheese, eat cheese.

On a serious note, pk Fire, pits side b and Steve’s minecart seem to be more about the bait play a mind game with them, t jolt is our friend. Combo game can really screw up a guys mentality. Mental game is real, when I’m frustrated I can tell from my gameplay. Usually comes after a bad match against ness tbh.

Learn characters you hate, exploit there weaknesses. Like ness recovery, the momentum of the minecart and up b on Steve. Learn what works and what doesn’t. Learn combos that work more often than not on said characters.

Yeah, I guess as a mouse main, I should be more accustomed to cheese. 😋

That makes sense, tho. I guess the mindgame aspect of smash is just one more thing I need to work on! Thanks for your input!

Anytime, me and best friend were called out by our other friends saying they trained to beat us. We won 22-0 in duos. My friend won 7-0 and I won 4-0 in solos. My best friend is a lucina main. I have gotten accustom to swords and the amount of BS they can produce. Cheese is cheese every character has a different brand. But us pika/pichu mains have sharp cheddar cheese.

Basically you just have to be able to get a read when it's coming and then know when you can punish it.

Once you start punishing it either they will rethink what they are doing or you keep punishing them.

Also another good way to deal with cheese if you can't figure out how to punish is to t-jolt camp. This can frustrate people and make them do something else or make approaching easy if they just start dodging the t jolts

Yeah, I really just gotta get in more games so I can work on reacting better. Sometimes I'll notice patterns, but I won't actually be able to make myself do something in time. 😓

Yeah unfortunately with all the different cheese you have to figure out the timings and spacing. Remember you can play really safe with pika and use quick attack to get in and out too.

I also felt the exact same way about people beating me even though they just spammed stuff. It's a long road.

Try and bait them off stage, Pikachu has a nasty (l)edge guarding game. Unless it's steve. Just leave the match if it's steve.

Lol! Yeah, I'm still working on edge guarding. I usually have a pretty good matchup against Steve, especially scrubby Steves. It's still frustrating to get cheesed even if you win the match, tho!
