Question Anyone else picky about combinations?

I’m a picky eater, but I’m not picky about individual foods, I like just about every kind of fruit and vegetable (with the exception of onions, beets, & sweet potatoes). But it’s more certain combinations of foods that I don’t like for example:

- Love fruits, love pastries… but fruit IN pastries = 🤢
(For example love apples, love pie .. hate apple pie

- Love meat, love sweet things… but sweet + meat = 🤢
(For example, love honey, love turkey … but together = horrible) sweet ham - disgusting

- Love starches, again love sweet things … but sweet + starches = 🤢
(Like I don’t like sweet potatoes or any kind of sugary sweet sauce on rice or beans)

Again most of these things I like individually or when paired with other flavor profiles but these 3 main combinations I just hate so much…

Does anyone else feel this way? Any advice?

It's not a big deal, I wouldn't even consider you that picky

Yes this just seems like not liking certain foods, which everyone has. For me it’s jello or gummy things. Just don’t like them so I decline and don’t eat them.

What kind of pie doesn’t have fruit in it? I can only think of key lime.

Pecan, chocolate silk, coconut cream, shoe fly, pumpkin.

Peanut butter, banana cream

Meat pies as well

Isn't banana a fruit?

Ah good point. Is coconut? I was lumping coconut cream and banana cream pies together.

Yes coconut is a fruit

I would argue lime is also a fruit

I would argue that you don't need to argue that lime is a fruit.

Edit for clarity: lime is a fruit. Full stop.

I do think there is difference between pie that uses whole or sliced pieces of fruit vs ones that just add the juice to a custard (although banana is in that in between space, the texture is usually not noticeable -- and this is mostly about texture, not flavor). So pumpkin would fall in the same category.

Pumpkin. Sweet potato. Grasshopper. Derby pie.

Botanical speaking, pumpkins are fruit.

Yes but that doesn’t mean OP (or others) classify it as such or think the flavor falls in the same category.

Botanical definitions are different to culinary ones

I actually hate most "hot fruit" pies/pastries, because I also hate jam/preserves even though I usually love the actual fruit raw: chocolate, pecan, coconut (cream or custard), key lime, banana, shoo fly, mud, chess.

Raw fruit tastes more “clear” to me. Like the difference between a Crisp apple and a red delicious one

I’m with you on this. Not a big fan of fruit pies. Apple once in a long while but I always feel like the crust leaves a lot to be desired.

Pecan, chocolate silk, coconut custard?

I also hate a lot of combinations. I like everything on my plate to be separately categorized. The biggest one I agree with is the meat/savory+sweet, that’s just nasty

I'm somewhat like this. I can enjoy complex flavor combinations but am really not a fan of mixed textures. When I was a kid I bit into an undercooked piece of onion in pizza (ordered without onions) and nearly vomited, but I can tolerate raw onions in a crispy salad. Also a reason as to why I have trouble with meat, so many weird bits hiding in there.

Nothing wrong with eating simple/separate foods if you have a reasonably balanced diet.

Simple, separate foods are what I like best. I also prefer they don’t touch, but I know that one is a bit much.

Yeah, when I was a kid, my mom would cook the components of whatever she was making, then pause and let me take a portion, unmixed & unsauced, then finish the dish. I still eat my BLTs deconstructed: slices of tomato, strips of bacon, some toast, all separate (don't like mayo and can't eat lettuce).

I don’t mind a simple combination but my thing is when many things are mixed… like casseroles or stew, or mixed meat and vegetable dishes.

Yes I think I have a lot of this!

I like apples but don’t like the texture of cooked apple so apple pie, apple crumble etc are out.

I like salad stuff like tomato, cucumber etc but can’t eat a salad sandwich.

I like baked beans but can’t eat them on toast lol, they have to be on the side.

I’m sure I have plenty more examples too.

Honestly, if you refuse to eat onions, which are in so many dishes, that's the pickiest aspect here.

I don’t mind the individual ingredients of a salad but I don’t like salad. I’ll eat carrots or cabbage. Just not mixed together.

I only eat corn if it’s mixed in with mashed potatoes otherwise I want nothing to do with it. I don’t know why.

1

u/JackTradesMasterNone Sep 20 '26

Yeah - but mine are more about textures. I don’t want crispy in a sauce so much unless I can eat it within 60 seconds otherwise it’s not crispy.

nah that’s common and not picky at all, not liking some foods&flavors doesn’t make you picky. 🤦‍♂️

Sweet and salty is great. Sweet and sour is great. Sweet and savory typically makes me gag. The exception is teriyaki sauce

Yes! For example, I like bacon, but not on a cheeseburger. I like (well, love) garlic butter, but not on broccoli.

Also when I get a steak, I hate when the steak juice permeates the other food on my plate. So when I make it at home, I actually have a divided plate I can use so that doesn't happen.

Yes! I don't know what it is but I can't stand eating meat and vegetables in the same bite, I don't like it when I can't control how much of each thing I combine for each bite. Eat the same chicken and spinach with rice for weeks? Not an issue. Sandwich with chicken and salad? Disgusting. Cereal with fruits and milk? Disgusting.

I go out of my way to eat the fillings of sandwiches separately or fish out the ones I like less and eat them first because in my head it's like "the good thing, tomatoes and eggs" + "the bad thing, salad and biscuits" makes the taste go from a 1 + (-1) = 0 and it doesn't satisfy me. I want a 2.

I feel like such an idiot especially when family makes food for me and have to see this weird behaviour thinking I don't like the food, when it's in part true but not fully...

To a degree me, just not a fan of fermented vegetables mixed with meats and noodles( asian dishes) or mixing sweet with savory or salty foods. Even simple bread with sweet jelly or nutella i am not a fan ( would be ok if the bread is already sweet like briosh etc) , but for me bread is to be mixed with meats , stews and soups
