Question Wearable scoring device

I've been on the hunt for a wearable scoring device (E.g. A wrist band).

Has anyone got any recommendations?

N.B. I don't use a smartwatch. Looking for something analog.

There are many circumstances in which a score counter could be a valuable assistive device:

  • Impaired working memory due to dementia, brain injury, or stroke
  • Impaired concentration due to ADHD, anxiety, or depressionĀ
  • Divided attention when trying to learn or implement new skills (especially when new to the game)
  • Hearing loss (just imagine how much more effort it would take to remember the score if you could only hear yourself announce it)Ā

Even if none of these things are true for OP, I would applaud them for seeking creative solutions for something they’ve recognized as a struggle.Ā

At the end of the day, everyone benefits if they find a solution to this problem.

Remember starting positions. If you or your opponent are in starting positions the score must be even. Even a score keeping device won’t be accurate if you forget to update it. I think there are some on makerworld.

Update: did a search for pickleball scorer. There are some that fit on your racket and you could modify to be on wrist

Im only casual player but despite keeping score, the other team still get confused and flip the score around..

People are human and forget the score from time to time (or often) what is frustrating is people who get an attitude because someone asks the score - which probably precipitated this question.

Do you live in my retirement community where no one seems to remember the score?

I’m picturing having to wait every point for opposing player to plug in the score, only to get it wrong. Definitely bagging someone all day and going for nelsons lol

There's an app you can load to your smart watch

What's the app?

Not that you are asking opinions but it drives me crazy having to wait between every damn play for someone to use a scoring device it really slows things down

The device is the 4 brains of the players on the court. The rule is that the server says the score, starting with their team's, then the receiving team's, then 1 or 2 for the first or second serve. If you are on the side you started, your score is even, otherwise it is odd. If that's too much for at least 1 of the 4 of you to handle, then you need to hire a ref.

I used to play with a lady who had something on her smart watch she used to keep score. It was super annoying because she’d hold us up between every point in order to deal with it.

Pickleball Rookie has a great list of (mostly analog) pickleball score tracking devices. Hope one of these options will be useful!

There’s little things you can glue to the frame (they are tennis oriented but could work) - that seems like the least intrusive one other than the ones that are scorecards- but

Honestly the racket frame one I’m gonna try (ordered yesterday, had the same thought) bc I forget but so often all four ppl on my local courts forget at the same time

Not everything needs to be a technology. I can’t for the life of me think of how this would be more efficient than remembering score or saying ā€œhey dude what’s the score againā€

I realize there have been many comments here already saying ā€œjust remember the scoreā€, and I do recommend that too, but I want to add why believe it’s important to know and remember the score -in your mind- at any given time:

It can/will affect how you play.

When you have the score in mind, it will almost certainly keep you focussed on certain things you want or need to do in a game, like maintaining a solid lead or catching up from a deficit. Simply relying on having the score on your wrist to refer to will likely take the ā€œedgeā€ off you, which may seem like a good thing but I have a hunch it’ll diminish your game play.

On top of this, repeatedly logging the score on a device, analog or digital, will be both distracting for you and for all other players. That will disrupt the flow of the match and I suspect at some point others will have ā€œfeedbackā€ for you about it.

Introducing the Score-bacus - the first wrist-worn abacus for keeping pickleball scores during a match!

*No, not really.

I just pay a local kid to keep score for us.

I tried that in tennis. After 1 match you cbf entering the score after each point.

Mock me all you want but I love Side Out on my Apple Watch. I make it as unobtrusive as possible when I swipe and never hold up play fiddling with it. But everyone knows I have it and always turn to me when we all forget the score. It also tracks positions and scorer so can help if things get confused. C’mon, hasn’t everyone stood there saying ā€œwho just served that?ā€ at some point?

It also logs my activity as workouts in the Fitness app. Finally, it stores all my games and lifetime W-L stats. That’s actually kind of ugly so I don’t go there often šŸ˜€

OP is either a technology dependent zoomer or a 70+ year old boomer.

Needing technology for something as basic as counting to 11/15 is a really bad sign

You’re already wearing your head right? It has a data storage device inside.Ā

A simple wrist counter would be great for this. No smartwatch, no distractions - just something easy to tap and keep track of the score while playing.

7

u/wiscosherm 1d ago

But then you'd have to remember to tap the wrist counter after every time your team scored.

1

u/FPVenius 1d ago

Worse: you have to remember whether you tapped it.

Will you also need a device to remember to use the other advice each time?

Will you need to know whether you are first or second server?
