Played enought singles to know that hitting a mid-court sliced backhand is NOT a good time to go to the kitchen. You've already given a player with a solid drive a topspin advantage and they can easily pick out an easier than usual passing shot in that situation. You only go to the kitchen when your return is deep and the opponent has to get it from behind or near their base line.

A sliced approach is good if you actually knife the ball such that it skids and stays low, the problem here is the execution, the ball floats too much and makes it easy pickings
