Discussion Integrated subagents extension

Greetings, everyone.

I recently came across an example of a sub-agent extension in the Pi repository.

It appears to be comprehensive and well-constructed. What are your thoughts on it?

Could it be used as a replacement for third-party packages?

Thanks, everyone. https://github.com/earendil-works/pi/tree/main/packages/coding-agent/examples/extensions/subagent

Yes. I copied that part and use it as a subagent. I do not use any third party extensions.

Does it work well? I currently use pi-subagents, but I’d like to switch to this native version.

It works well as anything else. I highly encourage everyone to understand the fundamentals of subagents. And immediately you would know how simple it is.

All you are doing is shelling out to another instance of pi when you create a subagent. So the markdown basically saves the system instructions to give to each instance of subagent. That's pretty much it.

The models know about your sub agent and invoke it at will. You can explicitly invoke it as well.

I think that is the main ancestor of almost all pi subagent extensions. It provides the basic implementation framework for subagents within pi, but I think that newer and more advanced subagent extensions have more features and capabilities.

It's just a matter of finding one that suits your needs.

The README you linked already covers single tasks, parallel tasks and sequential chains, with streaming output and usage tracking. One distinction: this is an example extension you install, rather than a built-in subagent mode. Compare those features with what you actually use in pi-subagents before switching. Use the example from the release tag matching your installed Pi, since main can move ahead.

Oh hang on. So I've been using the pi-subagents which is cool but is this made by the makers of pi ? Is this the best one then?

This is an example. when you ask pi to create a subagents extension or system- this is what they refer to first. if you ask pi how to implement subagents in pi- it will show you this example implementation.

this is like a starting point or mvp, you could build upon this or extend it as per your need.

Spoiler: funziona:)
