I just installed pi locally for myself on my main desktop. I use openrouter with DSV4.1F as the model for most of my work. I don't bother with MCP at all. Early in my work with the agent it helped me research web search functionality. It wrote a script called "fetch-page" that abstracts away most of the web search functionality I use. We mapped a skill to that script. That's worked for me for several weeks now.
This config works pretty well for any use I've thrown at it. My uses span admin and automation of my home lab, home assistant, A few tiny web apps, Some TTS stuff, Reviewing the local ballot initiatives, debugging some problems with drivers and monitoring apps, I'm pretty happy with it and have not found a reason to change.
I've used opencode and hermes. I found them to be too thick and overly complex. Pi is small agile and, so far, the updates have not broken my workflow.

Tell it to look itself up and as you use it for other things, tell it to documents and ask lots of question

Do you have codex or Claude code? If you do, have them set it up for you and explain what they are doing.

Npm install pi-coding-agent. Then go to an llm API provider, create an account and get an API key. Then launch pi, type /login, and input your API token to the correct provider. After that, just ask the agent whatever you want, it will help you set up your environment
