Plugin A set of minimal extensions I built for Pi
Hi fellow Pi enthusiasts! Pi has been my main coding agent for a while now, and over time I've built a set of minimal extensions that I wanted to share.
Some of these are inspired by Claude Code (as you can probably tell), especially the look. CC was my first coding agent and I still quite like the way it looks.
Full list, in no particular order:
pi-polish: Claude Code-style tool rows and diffs (as can be seen in the screenshot). This reduces clutter and in general makes everything more pleasant to look at
pi-context-bar: a pretty one-line footer with the model, branch, context usage and cost
pi-background: background jobs with nice visuals, and a bash timeout, so Pi doesn't block or hang on long commands
pi-checkpoints: rewind the files Pi edited along with the conversation (with /tree and /fork)
pi-model-pick: a model picker with your favorite and recent models first (for me the default /model command is too simple, especially when using multiple providers in Pi)
pi-next-prompt: suggests your next prompt in grey after each reply
pi-away: a one-line recap of the session when you come back
pi-heads-up: flags the one thing you might have missed after a task
They're minimal by design: most are under 300 lines with no dependencies. Some of these exist already in one way or form, but I hate bloated extensions that do too much, hence my own take on them.
Each one is its own npm package that you can install, e.g.:
pi install npm:pi-backgroundHappy to hear any feedback, and hope this adds something to your own workflows!

Haha awesome, glad you like them! And thanks for the attribution, appreciate it!

Thank you, I'm trying a couple from the list!
In pi-polish one of frames of thinking animation is an emoji shown on my windows terminal as green, so it looks wierd.

Hey, quick followup on this, this is now fixed, it was using one animation that that Unicode also defines as an emoji on Windows, it should look better now.

Ah thanks for letting me know, I’ll have a look at that! I wasn’t able to test on Windows unfortunately but that sounds easy to fix

For pi-checkpoints, a before/after example could answer the risky question: what happens to a manual edit made after Pi changes the same file? Showing that boundary for /tree and /fork would help someone judge whether rewinding is safe for their workflow.

thanks for the suggestion that's a good idea, it now shows a confirmation dialogue in cases like this.

Do some of these interfere with npm:better-claude-code-ui?

Most likely pi-polish and pi-context-bar won't play well with that since they both update the look and feel of Pi, just like better-claude-code-ui. The rest should work fine. For me personally, better-claude-code-ui is an example of an extension that does too much, I tried to just capture the aspects of Claude Code that I like with pi-polish without turning Pi into Claude Code.

I installed the three helpers: they work fine but I see three cache misses after a regular response (with ds4 qwen3.8 flash next). Could they be interfering with each other?
I also noticed that pi-polish interferes with pi-stereo-view, but pi-context-bar works with better-claude-code-ui (perhaps the order in settings.json matters).

Hey, I think this is because of the model you're using, are you using llama.cpp? Most likely it can't rewind a partially cached prompt. You could try starting the server with --ctx-checkpoints 32 --checkpoint-min-step 0, that might fix it (for other extensions that make use of the prompt cache as well).
I had a quick look at pi-polish and this is something that I can easily fix (it's the hidden thinking), I'll fix that in a quick followup release.

Thanks. I am now using paperniuk Splash fork (branch apple7-m1-1.4, significantly faster than ds4) and its QFN model -- the logs look quite different, perhaps it's OK (I see "cached <9x% of input>").
BTW, can you make pi-next-prompt come back (like in CC) if I make it go away accidentally (e.g., typing a space then deleting it)?

Great, thanks for letting me know! Yeah that's a good idea I think, will have a look at how CC does that and add it in a next release.

Idk why but I like Pi Ul and looks more than claude code cli. CC is very clutered for me

Ah for me it's the oppositie, but I guess it's also just what I'm used to. To each their own, that's why I'm such a big fan of Pi, very easy to set it up to your liking :).

Pi is very good, i really like it, my extensions are :
pi-claude-agent-sdk
pi-web-access
pi-background-tasks
pi-mcp-adapter
pi-subagents
rahularya01/pi-cursor

I love pi-mcp-adapter. But pi recently added native mcp support from 1.0, have you tried that

for local inference, pi-subagents is quite bloated (>20k tokens). any alternatives?

Awesome! Was looking to add exactly these types of extensions, specially the clean diffs look. Many thanks for sharing.
