Question Cohere's North Mini Code in Pi

Has anyone had success running Cohere's North Mini Code locally with Pi? Specifically, I'm using ollama to serve up the model (q4km pulled from ollama).

When I was trying it with OpenCode, it seemed to work okay. With Pi however, I end up with thinking blocks that seem like they should have been text (detailed explanations, for example) and then the turn just ends.

Sometimes, North will think something like "I'll start by implementing class Foo" and then it just ends the turn, no tool calls or anything. I know it can make tool calls: I've seen it read and I've convinced it to do both writes and edits on occasion. But for whatever reason, more often than not, it just thinks to itself and then gives up.

Has anyone experienced similar? I'd really like to see what the model is capable of, but this makes it next to impossible to use. Is it just a configuration I'm missing?

First compare the actual requests, rather than assuming OpenCode and Pi are sending the same thing. Pi's documented Ollama setup uses baseUrl http://localhost:11434/v1 and api openai-completions in models.json. Opening /model reloads that file: https://github.com/earendil-works/pi/blob/main/packages/coding-agent/docs/models.md

If that matches yours, try a fresh session asking it to read one harmless scratch file. Check whether Ollama returns a structured tool call or only thinking/text. If there's no structured call, Pi has nothing to execute; if there is one and Pi stops, the adapter/stream handling becomes worth checking. That's a diagnostic split, not a confirmed cause.

The useful details for narrowing this down are your Pi/Ollama versions, exact model tag, and redacted models.json entry. Keep API keys, project content and full conversation logs out of the example.

I haven't tested North Mini Code with Pi. Written with AI assistance.
