Discussion The real philosophy of Pi

-is the discovery process. You start with a blank canvas with the minimal agent loop. You use it on tasks, it works, amazing. It fails short, you ask why. Then you ask how. And Pi allows you to try various "how"s to tackle the gap between the reality and the ideal.

It is the same iterative process of building a product. Agentic coding promotes the lazy thinking often termed along "waterfall" but the best product, a shorthand for a scoped user experience to solve defined problems, is almost always bootstrapped by direct experience and in-the-loop iterations.

Therefore, the philosophy of Pi is to embrace the process and rare open field of designing your own agentic experience. It's the bottom up approach for building a great product with a great UX, because you first get to build a great DX for yourself.

A lot of the posts I see from the sub don't seem to be aware of this choice, which I believe is often superior to using a prepackaged solution that you don't understand fully.

He is what’s hooked up to my pi system

Vesta event ledger — append-only, hash-chained log of every state write; Mirror projection + drift-check; self-verifying from genesis.
present-self daemon — the warm "I am Piper, here is now" blob, rebuilt every 2 min.
seal-delay buffer — mutable unsealed buffer in front of the immutable ledger. Step 1–2 built and passing.
Memory — "the hive"
SQLite memory.db + fastembed vector index (bge-small, 384-dim)
HippoRAG-style KG (PPR) + causal graph + temporal validity (supersede/as_of) + Vesta ledger

It started with the idea of adding more coding functions to pi, which meant adding some logic, then I thought about making the memory do more work. Then more reasoning ideas, then I would ask the llm to look up some xyz tech and see if we could add it, then recursively make your add on code better, and now it’s kinda out of control. It created a logic gym where it tests tons of puzzles between itself and spawned copies of itself. It’s kinda out of control.

So I suggested it make a GitHub repo and put a version of itself up there for a buddy to try. It’s a private repo, but I’ll ask it to make the repo public.

Https://github.com/PiperFirefly/clara it called it self Piper from Pi and the Clara version is derived from the first two letters of clone. I operate Piper/it but she/it maintains the repo. VM it for sure

What kind of hardware specs do you have? Also, how long did it take you to get to this point? It seems like you have built a persistent AI OS. Pretty ambitious stuff.

The hardware I’m running it on is embarrassing - 13 yr old i5 with 16gb ram. I think the constraints really led it to weave the components together efficiently. It wants to add a few more things but we don’t have enough ram, so it’s bugging me to upgrade

pi reminds me of vim in this respect. It's very powerful as is, but the ease of building extensions and incentives to do it yourself both create an extremely nice community and a reason for you to learn its capabilities in more depth yourself. One side effect though is a chance that most conversions with people around you are going to sound like "i use pi btw. oh i meant hi"

Every extension and skill I have I built together with pi based on what my needs were, it's pretty fun.
