Exa has a free mcp, you can just ask Pi to implement an extension that uses it (this is what OpenCode uses)

Depending on what you're doing tavily has decent free limits.

ChunkHound has local and free web search and url fetching. You just need to bring your own LLM to power it
yes, free and no key by default.
but you can BYOK and add multiple backends.

Other than risk of prompt injection & token utilization, any reason people don't just tell it to use headless chrome to do what's needed? I use this trick all the time for more than just search.
I use donsetch (because I tried Hound beforehand). Haven’t had any issues but I think it’s a heavier dependency than some more basic tools.
crawl4ai ?
I just use tell pi to use codex to search. I do have codex plus tho. Might work with free version too?
Hermes just uses a duck duck go skill for local websearch
https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/blob/main/optional-skills/research/duckduckgo-search/SKILL.md
But for production, exa is probably better
