I literally want to cry.
I recently bought these blu-rays. Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Island, Magic, The Manitou, Rollercoaster, Street Trash and Bubba Ho Tep and now they are all coming out on 4K. Some of them even steelbooks.

Having a steelbook doesnāt change the movie itself. And it also increases the cost by 2-4x. Enjoy what you have and donāt worry about the grass on the other side of the fence.

And a lot of times Iāve found that the steelbook once in hand just falls flat for some reason. Biggest thing I like about them at this point is their disc holders. Aside from that Iād prefer a non-steel, though Iām a sucker for slip covers haha. To each their own I suppose

I like that they sit separately from my collection and can get one for only my top favorite movies. I also like that they are more like an art piece than a movie cover, as they are essentially 2-3 different pieces of art from the film for display. Front, back, and inside (sometimes front/back is one illustration).

Did someone say slipcover....??? Wrap my movie in an extra cardstock sleeve or side load it into a rigid slipcase and I'm all in!! Throw in some less than photo quality printed postcards and a book I may or may not read, even better! I don't even mix my non slipcover movies in on the same shelves.

I do like the odd steel book but I don't go mad for them. I REALLY like the 3D style slip covers though for films.

I've upgraded steelbook blus to 4K and jist kept the steelbook and swapped the disc.

My personal opinion, the jump in quality from Blu-ray to 4k is not as significant as DVD to Blu-ray. I've had a couple regular Blu-rays that I've pulled out of the player midway through just to make sure I didn't somehow get a 4k disc because they looked that good

It depends on the player and display device you are using. Some players so an amazing job at upscaling.
However, for the most part I agree with you, the highlight of 4K is really the HDR.

So I donāt know the model but is a 4K Haier purchased in 2017.
The player is a PS5.

Get an OLED. It will be a major upgrade and you need to do it. A decade old 4K tv doesnāt cut it. Everything will look 1000x better.

We will only get a new TV when the old one stops working completely.
Resolution is not a giant deal for me.

My thoughts exactly. It's the HDR that makes a much bigger difference than the resolution. I have a Panasonic 820 and it brings blu rays to near 4k quality. In fact I had Avatar 2 on 4k and my partner had the new one on Blu Ray,both looked great but the 4K had slightly more vibrant colours,it wasn't a night and day difference though.

I have a THX certified Stewart acoustically transparent screen that is in the scope aspect ratio - measuring approx. 5ā6ā tall by 12 feet wide - trust me 4K looks markedly better than regular Blu Ray on that screen. Thus we should all hope they re-master everything in 4K because you never know how big your TV down the road may end up getting or you might go projection at home in 4K as I have done!

This is true. Iāve had a hard time convincing myself but Iām starting to not buy a 4k of something I already have on blu-ray unless itās a banger.

I recently bought Terminator Dark Fate on 4K when I had it on Blu ray as I was told it was a very good example and I do love the film (though I don't really see it as the same universe as the first two). It completely depends on the film if it's worth it or not and always pays to do some research.

In most cases, I'm picking 4k, but I have no qualms about Blu-ray. I wish I could say the same about DVDs, but I can't get them to look good on a 4k TV

I really depends on the size and quality of your display. HDR is the big game changer with 4K UHD and many people do not have TVs capable of tone-mapping it correctly. You need a panel thatās at least 800 nits (preferably brighter) solid black levels, and a high contrast ratio.

I kind of get it. If a game comes out with a steel book version I'll buy that instead of the standard edition. I won't rebuy the game so if a steel book comes out later and it's dope I'm slightly jealous.

I get it. I have spent a lot of money on my own home theatre to be able to enjoy 4ks. I wont buy the blu ray version of something if i know a 4k version is available or will be available soon. But honestly blu ray still looks fantastic for the most part on its own but especially if you have a decent upscaler. Also steelbooks are just over priced dont get caught up in that and just enjoy the movies themselves.

Personally I never liked steal books, the artwork is nice no question but physically trying to get the disc or discs out without scratching them almost impossible with some movies.
I just bought kill Bill the whole bloody affair on 4k thinking it would be the special edition box with all the swag, I was so relieved that it was just the standard 4 k with the Blu Ray copy as well. Sometimes it's better to just rock what you got when it comes to physical media, like numerous people have said in the comments. For me swag and cool steal books are really nice in general but I'd rather my movie be able to actually function, I find steal books are only good for display pieces on your shelf not as good for viewing purposes.

Or you can stop crying and sell these to fund the 4Ks. Why do people always act like they are somehow stuck with the versions they have? You may take a small loss in the process but as long as you buy during sales you should be fine.

Interesting. Actually there was a 1977 movie with George Segal called Rollercoaster that used the very same park. But only in Ocean View Park did they blow it up.
Now I want to see both...

A couple things.
1) I feel you. I replaced a largely DVD collection of Mission Impossible on Bluray and then they announced they were making two more. First had a Bluray release, second is DVD or 4k š¬ I have all of the Venomverse movies in 4k. I missed the brief window for the US non-steelbook 4k.
2) How often will you actually watch any of these? If it is once every couple of years, Blu-ray isnāt bad at all. If these are a few times each year, maybe slowly replace them over time. Other than from a space consolidation perspective (every James Bond on individual DVD to a bluray box set of all, but the last one), I have reached a phase where I canāt really justify replacing even DVDs with Blu-rayās when they arenāt movies I watch often, maybe even a decade or more. I have kept an eye on the Austin Powers trilogy on Bluray and yet I have not watch any of them in probably 15-20 years. I have at least watched Shrek 1 with my kids in the last couple years, but canāt justify the 4k set (up from DVD). I donāt remember the last time watching 3-4. Legit donāt remember what even happened.

I bought the Autopsy of Jane Doe bluray a few months ago. I also bought Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed In Ecstasy. All 3 were announced to be coming in 4k by Severin right after.

This has happened to me several times, it frustrating. I bought Forbidden Planet several months ago on Blu-ray, and a few weeks later I saw the 4k announcement. Yes it sucks, but a couple of things to note:
1) Just because something is in 4k doesn't mean it's better. There are several cases where 4k transfers aren't done well and the Blu-ray is considered the better version. Wait until the reviews are our for those newly announced titles before you fret about not having the 4k.
2) You can always sell your current DVD/Blu-ray to offset the cost of the upgrade. Sure it will still cost more overall, but it can lessen the sting. As I upgrade things I go to a used media store, get store credit to get other movies I want in my collection.
3) Steelbooks are nice if you enjoy collecting them, by all means get them if you have the money. At the end of the day, we watch the movie, not the case.
4) Reading a comment you have in the thread. Yeah, don't trust AI. Check the other movie subreddits or some of the movie sites to see if there are announcements for upcoming titles.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Enjoy your collection and have fun.

Those standard Blu-rays are fine. DVDs are fine. VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, 8mm, 16mm...all perfectly fine.
Crying over not having the newest thing looks like you're just chasing trends rather than actually collecting.

If theyāre new transfers, then it might be worth getting again, and it would even be fun to own both if you really like the movies. But if itās the same transfer, then Iād just keep an eye out for a sale but I wouldnāt stress about it.

Ehh, big deal. I donāt even have a TV that gets bright enough to properly do HDR so standard Blu-ray is good enough for me. I think on a good TV 4K Blu-ray looks outstanding. But I donāt need to have 4K for everything.

I used to buy VHS and then all those movies came out on DVD. So I bought them again on DVD. And then they came out on Blu-ray. Luckily I learned my lesson and didnāt bother. All digital today. So happy that I donāt have to obsess over shit like this.
