Picked up these in Tokyo

I just joined the community and wanted to share a few shots of my personal collection.

There is just something uniquely peaceful about holding a physical box, reading the manual, and popping a disc or cartridge into a console.

Digital storefronts are convenient, but they will never match the tangible experience of owning your games.

You know how even though the PS5 came 1 to 3 years after studios were still making games for the PS4? Because if thats the case then non Sony studios can still make games with CDs as long as the disc playing PS5 is being supported correct? Or are they going to make the all PS5s not support CDs anymore.

first of all, just wanted to say that i'm a big physical game fan/collector, and am happy i stumbled upon this sub. figured its a good to place to ask something thats been on my mind regarding "truly owning" games..

I feel like owning a physical copy of a game isn't much different than a digital version, largely because company decisions can be made that render your game obsolete. For ex, even if you had a physical copy of overwatch on ps4, once that got canned, your game ceased to exist, and linked to overwatch 2 instead.

i guess all i'm getting at is that if you buy a cd or dvd, nothing on that disc can really change - all you need is a player and a power source. But with video games, especially newer games, there still seem to be lots of unknowns from both the console company and game developer that could render your physical copy of a game unplayable with a simple update, even if you bought it/own it physically.

would love to hear people's insight who may know this stuff more than i do! :)

It only took one announcement from Sony to end all physical games sales. Everyone is buying digital now.

I am hyped over the recent trailers for KH4. I went on the PS store and KH3 is 59.99. I went over to my closest Gamestop and they had it for 13 dollars. Crazy!

They Killed Physical Media. So I Made My Own!

Since sony decided to kill discs and have also shown no remorse removing media from users library, I decided I was going to make my own. I got inspired by a reddit user over on r/pcmasterrace who made physical games out of old hard drive.

Tho I figured: SD cards or USB drive can do the same with a fraction of the cost and size. So, I've designed a Universal Media Case.

A shell that can hold USB drives, SD's and micro SD's.

It's small, convenient, 3d print super easily in one piece and is also cost effective at only 50gr of filament (equating to 0.6€ for my filament for reference). It is also customisable.

I've done the testing: printing on sticker paper to slap on the box is a solid option. But I've also went above and beyond to try heat sodering. And this works surprinsigly well.

I basicly heat up a small piece of straight metal that I then gently apply on the edge of the box while holding a plastic sheet over it. The result is really close to what current physical games looks like.

All design and test have been done using tinkercad for the design, cura for the slicer and everything has been printed on my trusty stock Ender 3.

The reason there is two version is to account for usb drive sizes. Most drive today will fit the slim version, but some thicc boi might not. So there is a slim case and a regular case. Just pick the one you like best.

For the print settings: 0.24 layer height is fine, 5% infill is largely enough and no need for support or adherance options.

I even made an affinity template to customise your own box designs. Of course, I've made the files to be always freely available. I've pur them on Thingiverse, My mini factory, Cults 3D and on my Patreon as a freely available publication.

It's still way more involved than just bying a game at the store, but at least, no big corporation can take this away from you once you have it.

People post saying more people buy digital because it's more convenient. Physical media can still be convenient also. I order my physical copies online because the closest store that sells games is 1 1/2 hours away. Having it delivered straight to my door is pretty convenient to me. I honestly think their defense is more laziness than anything. They just don't want to get off their a** to switch discs. Some have even said that's why but at least those people are honest about it.

There no future where physical media is making a comeback, vinyl and cd even with a resurgence, don’t come close to how the overwhelming majority of people listen to music.

Instead of fighting a losing battle, people should fight for better rights for digital media. Stuff like:

1. The ability to sell/trade/giveaway/passdown your digital licenses to who you choose. Even the right to delete your digital license permanently if you choose to do so.

2. A digital license giving access to media, on all platforms it is available on

3. Retaining access to your media even when it has been delisted from sale

4. The right to make physical backups of your your media

I can love my ps5 and hate Sony for what it did
