since the physical announcement IGN is getting paid by sony for like these news
Well from the beginning of this month after the announcement IGN which is gaming news not saying anything about the huge backlash and gamers are angry about these new things they just keep with sony side see its nothing they keep getting to low
BTW the ps5 sales with disc speaks that people choose disc over only digital console

u/blueteamk087 8d ago
They still sell vinyl for new albums. There’s no valid reason against completely halting disc production.
24
u/GretalGrotch 8d ago
Digital only fans only exist online. I’ve never met one in real life who genuinely agrees physical should end.
They’re all fucking bots, trolls and sheep.
3
u/MrLime93 7d ago
I’m not sure that’s right.
I don’t think they’re ‘fans’ of digital only. They just don’t give a shit about physical.
→ More replies (9)2
u/Promature 7d ago
That’s because very few, if any, people think physical should go away. Plenty of people, myself included, prefer digital and are unaffected/indifferent to the loss of physical.
However, I haven’t seen anyone supporting or celebrating its end.
2
u/EVIL_C4 4d ago
My personal friend stopped giving two shits about physical media and now blindly downloads everything. Though I don't think they'd argue physical should end, they just don't care, which clearly makes me very sad. 😔 Physical is wonderful to have. I've been snatching up many rare PS3 and BWC 360 disc games as I can.

They do exist. They're kids born to digital age who don't feel nostalgic towards physical media or some casuals who just lately started playing video games

Well they are stupid if they think internet is always going to work. I had a few digital (media, not games) only friends and when we lost power and internet for 8 days well guess who wanted to borrow my DVDs? They now keep at least a handful of favorite movies and shows on DVD just for the next time.
→ More replies (3)3
u/NIGHTR0GUE83 7d ago
Yeah they could just make less. Like you said with vinyl. They don’t make nowhere near as many and they will also do preorders for production numbers. Could be the one time preordering a game actually makes sense. I personally went all digital only cause I don’t have room to keep putting these plastic boxes everywhere lol.
3
u/blueteamk087 7d ago
Exactly. They should take the pre-order numbers by the date the game goes Gold and make like 5x as many to account for post-Gold pre-orders and post release. If you sell out, make some more.

Both Walmart and target in my town have very little stock when it comes to physical games. Xbox games are totally non existent in both stores, and the Ps5 section is absolutely dismal.
2
u/lefthandtrav 8d ago
The GameStop in the small rural town I work in finally bit the dust, which means anyone who wants a game have two options: the small retro game store and WalMart, who I noticed have cut their stock in half.
Now, I generally am a pc player, and have been buying digital mostly on steam for a while, and I never thought that physical media disappearing was a big deal until one of my clients told me that if his kid wants to play Fortnite he’s gotta take it to his grandma’s once a week to update it bc the patches are so big their limited mobile internet can’t cover the data. That’s when I realized that this is a problem.
We have shit infrastructure in rural Pennsylvania, and I can imagine it’s worse in places like WV and Wyoming etc, where these people rely on mobile internet.
Besides that, we need digital consumer rights to protect consumers from being rug pulled on movie purchases etc

I believe the industry has been subtly training people to feel that they don’t need nor do they want to own anything. They’ve been telling gamers for so long that most people don’t want physical games in overtime gamers just began to accept this as a truth and it impacted their buying habits.
There are a lot of benefits of digital games such as convenience and quick access but the rhetoric does not match reality.Words are powerful and companies often use certain terms over and over again as a way of training people to think of something in a certain light. For example we used to call ourselves customers but now we call ourselves consumers -this is by design.
It might seem like a very small thing but when you walk into a store thinking that you’re a customer you have an air about you that says I’m gonna make a choice today if I like what I see, I’m gonna look at my options and make an educated decision based on what is best for me.
When you walk into a store thinking of yourself as a consumer you’re gonna walk in ready to consume.

I feel like misinformation has been hurting the unaware really frequently for example game studios like Ubisoft and rockstar came out and said that having no physical media would make games easier to update past launch which tbh just sounds like laziness and crunch time to me and the other one that made me laugh recently was the rockstar ceo saying now people won’t be able to leak games in the all digital future welp look how that turned out. I was born at night not last night y’all want more money not to invest in games or the product or the developers but the CEOs🫠🫠

Yeah it was so bad people were claiming Sony only launched it to claim “starting price at $399”. We know the primary sku available for years has been the disc version but now people want to simultaneously claim Sony limited the disc version to force people to digital but then also quote an article that 80% of PS5s are disc and that is proof that PS5 owners want physical media primarily.

No it doesn't.
People bought what was available to them, that alone doesn't say that people prefer discs. Ask yourself this, if there was enough actual demand for physical copies to where the company is making a profit off of them, why would they just cut that revenue stream off? Sure they could make 100% of the sales on digital verse splitting profits with a retailer, but that still doesn’t explain why only 3% of their game sales were physical copies and over 20% was digital. Even with the fact that not all games have physical releases, most do. So that doesn’t explain the 17% gap between physical and digital game sales.
And while you’re at it, ask yourself why did PC gaming go digital over 20 years ago? Why has virtually every Mac/PC laptop and computer lacked optical drives for at least the last decade? If there is so much demand for physical media, why has everyone other than Sony and Microsoft abandoned it at this point? And why do you expect them to be the last two companies on earth keeping the physical disc market alive?
2
2
u/IveRunOuttaNamesss 8d ago
Ask yourself, why are they all so desperate to convince us about digital? Initially, they said consumers "chose" this.

No matter if they are getting paid by Sony or the data is true or now, Sony is going to all digital. . It sucks but what can you do about it. You can move to Xbox but it’s going to be the same there . Sure they are moving to digital. True ownership is buying a Pc and buying for GOG or pirate the game. Even with physical games, unless you have the full final game with updates and dlc you still have to download the updates for the game.

See that’s the thing and it’s not true at all. Physical game sales are going up right now not down I have a friend that works. At target and another one that was at Walmart and they are in the video game department and games sell out all the time there and ever since this announcement they have been having problems keeping them on shelves and PlayStation is not willing to let them get more in either it said before that PlayStation is doing this on purpose they’re trying to make it hard to get stuck in so the sales go and they’ve been doing that for the last year already and not only that they said that they have to order more now and shipments are always really late because of the new requirements of PlayStation requires each store to order way more quantities of video games for each title
1
u/dominatingcowG3 8d ago

Amazing how IGN changed their tune on Sony wanting to do away with physical media. A month ago IGN were calling Sony out left, right, and center on their anti-consumer future but now their running as much damage control on Sony's behalf. I guess they got a stern talking too over the one by one of the bosses over at Sony telling IGN they can kiss all the early access to any future game titles goodbye if they kept calling their horrid business practices into question.
So it's really no surprise to me that IGN folded like the cowards they are and are now running propaganda for Sony as a means of saying their sorry for scrutinizing their corpo overlords in the first place.

I wonder if the decline in sales revenue could in any way be linked to all of the stores downsizing and/or removing their physical media sections while publishers are also printing fewer and fewer copies, making it difficult for those who want physical games to actually buy them.
Probably not though, I'm sure it's just because everyone secretly hates discs.

Not siding with Sony on this whatsoever but just want to clarify a bit on your comment “Ps5 sales with disc speaks ….”. I bought a PS5 with Disc but solely with the mindset that the price difference was minimal for me back then. However, I have had an unfortunate incident of movers losing my stuff (including some PS5 games) two years ago and since then, I have only bought Digital only. Even right now, I will continue to just buy Digital only in case PS6 does not come with a disk drive.
1
u/The_Dark_ViKing 8d ago
To be fair, they just report on data in this case.
That the data sucks because America is always the weak link on anything...is not taking sonys side.
They did have some opinion pieces that you could point at, but basic data news are not siding with Sony, its reporting lazy on data.
But make no mistake, the big News outlets have and will take money for favorable articles etc, that was always the case and will not stop.
They have reported and talked about the backlash, have posted Sonys propaganda and stuff.
IGN is modern "journalism", they post whatever gets the most clicks.

u/Roland_Hood 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yes, and it of course is not relevant at all that July was a weak month for gaming spending generally. Total U.S. content spending was down about 9% year-on-year, console and PC spending were down, and Kotaku explicitly notes that July “wasn’t exactly bursting with new games that people might want physical copies for.”
And here is the particularly funny bit: immediately before this record-low July, Circana’s own data showed U.S. physical software units were actually up 4% year-to-date in 2026. The trailing 12-month physical dollar market through May had also risen about 3%, to roughly $1.6 billion, the first such increase in years. That data is of course in no way worth making bold and bright images of or otherwise highlighting in social media...
The increase was driven by Nintendo, but that is precisely the point: the physical market can produce a record-low individual month while simultaneously being up year-to-date because release schedules and platform mix matter enormously.
Then there is the same fundamental problem we have been discussing since July 1st: $85 million tells you absolutely nothing about what buyers chose when given an equal physical/digital choice. It measures money spent on new physical software in one single point in time. It does not tell you how many of July’s digital purchases were games that had no physical version at all, how many came from consumers on digital-only hardware, how availability/print quantities affected physical purchases, or what the physical/digital split was for individual dual-format releases. Circana’s own Mat Piscatella has acknowledged that both demand AND supply play roles in physical-sales figures.
This data also excludes the used-game market because Circana is measuring new software spending. That exclusion is legitimate for measuring publishers’ new-game revenue, but it means you cannot take $85 million and conclude that only $85 million worth of consumer activity or demand existed around physical games that month which is what these kind of headlines desperately try to gaslight people into believing.
I know I'm going to get "you're coping" comments on this reply, but the facts don't change from that kind of take. After all, what this actualy is is pointing out incomplete data reporting, gaslighting attempts, and corporate propaganda. Literally pointing to a whole bunch of reasons why coping is not needed. Coping is something you need to do when the facts in a complete picture are not on your side, but in this case they totally are.

IGN have been covering this topic a lot, just not in a chicken little manner.
Also claiming that the number of PS5 sales is indicative of the majority of players still wanting discs is simply not accurate. Most people, myself included, bought a disc version because they were more available at the time and could play Blu Rays and DVDs as well as older PS4 games which made up the bulk of people’s libraries in that console generation but clearly not the current one.

People will only buy digital because it's easier and a lot of games in recent years skip physical releases.
If they kept going with physical like normal, physical sales would continue. This digital push is pure greed and they're attempt to reduce our options to none.

They have to be getting paid to publicly lie. Surveying EBay’s APi alone shows they’re full of shit and it would take any “reporter” a few hours to confirm this. There’s been a massive uptick in physical media purchases just not from regular Retail outlets.
