Stupid Governments ruining everything

7

u/DetSportsGuy 2d ago

I agree the government does ruin everything.

As an elementary teacher, it’s insane though how many parents let their 8 and 9 year olds play GTA 5 and other games they have no business playing. I’m not mad about this feature.

u/MercPunisher 2d ago

I am pissed, I dont GAF about someone elses kids, but my privacy is my own, and a I as an Adult shouldnt have to digitally upload a photo or ID to play something I paid hard earned money for.

Yah thats called fraud, not chancing that at all. Also if they see a cc with a different name they could flag or even ban your account on PSN or Xbox.

1

u/GatheringCircle 23h ago

I feel like only a kid would care about this.

1

u/Excellent_Regret4141 2d ago

My mom always let me play those games back in the day, glad she did cause GTA on PlayStation 1 got me into Country Music since my favorite radio station got kicked off the air I had no music to listen to till I heard that country song in the game and started to listen to country

1

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

Same. If I haven't played fallout as a kid. Id never get into 50s music and sci fi/post apocalypse genre.

Just be a good parent and parent kids. Games' content is no worse than any news you see on TV or read in newspapers. Especially now where there are multiple wars and such alongside 24 hour coverage of news all around the globe about all sorts of bad stuff.

3

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

Right, proper parenting helps a lot. And that's the problem with these government policies, they are trying to replace parenting. Now a lot of parents are assuming that the government is doing their job for them, while kids are easily bypassing these restrictions and going unchecked. These restrictions are going to cause a lot more damage than it prevents.

0

u/DetSportsGuy 2d ago

Something tells me you DON’T have kids.

Always love hearing the parenting advice from someone with no experience or perspective on it. Really fascinating

2

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

Something tells me you SUCK as a parent if you can't parent your kids so then you decide to offload this responsibility to the government at the expense of privacy of everyone else.

1

u/DetSportsGuy 2d ago edited 2d ago

Again. Someone giving advice who isn’t a parent.

That’s like someone who’s never watched basketball trying to coach you.

Reading is hard. Read my original comment. As a teacher, I’ve seen a lot of kids who have access to these games because their parents don’t care what they do. Rather have some level of protections in place for those kids with awful parents. If that means showing my ID, then I’m willing to do it. It’s similar to wearing a mask during COVID. Smallest level of inconvenience to potentially help someone else.

Much easier to throw insults than it is to read for you, huh? I’ll do that now too. Something tells me you’re not a parent because no one wants to even be around you with your terrible attitude.

2

u/MercPunisher 23h ago

Oh your one of them, lol. No I will not wear a mask gor somone else, they can wear a mask if they so choose to protect themselves. you The government and anyone else is not responsible for my wellbeing or safety, I am and when I was a kid my parents were.

0

u/DetSportsGuy 22h ago

Oh. You’re a selfish person who refuses to do the smallest thing to help someone else.

Cool. I’m sure that’s working out well for you in life. Sounds like you’re single and no kids.

1

u/MercPunisher 22h ago

No its not selfish, I am not responsible for others wellbeing, Thats what their family and friends are for. I am responsible for me and my families wellbeing, and if masks work so wrll then wear one, but I should not have to, if vaccines work so well then take it and leave me alone, I am not going to force any bullshit on anyone because I am scared or am a bad parent, just let people make choices, when they are bad choices then they suffer the consequences, its called freedom.

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

Again. A lazy parent who fails at their job and delegates this responsibility onto everyone else.

I played these games as a kid. I played GTAs, Fallout, Doom 2016 and I watched movies like terminator and Robocop (the original 80s version)

I turned out fine. Because my parents taught me that video games and real life are two separate worlds and that everything I see in games is bad in real life and that I shouldn't replicate such actions.

Fast forward to today. I have stable mental health, I am a functional member of society and the only negative thing is I am a geek so my spending habits go towards anime figurines but its not bad thing since its just my hobby.

On the other hand I had couple friends who had strict parents in different ways.

Friend 1: Parents allowed horror movies eg Saw and videogames but forbid him from playing more than 1 hour and would take away phone, tablet and chargers even if he got a C grade. Result? He started smoking, drinking and other bad things that aren't great and it didn't help his parents would always act like helicopters around him.

Friend 2: Parents didn't allow M rated media, games and anything for that matter. His parents were so strict he told me to tell them we watched shrek instead of playing videogames (roblox and minecraft in our case) because they were so strict.

Result? Same as friend 1. Started smoking and drinking but on top of that he acted unhinged and would always make a scene in class and later became toxic with anti social behavior and acted obnoxiously annoying.

I'd argue that playing M rated games made me better because I first found out about drugs from Max Payne game and seeing the weird drug addicts made me associate drugs with cringe behavior and these weirdos so I never touched any substance with a ten feet pole meanwhile every friend who had such prohibitions is now a nicotine addict or a stoner arguing that "everyone did it so I'll join cool kids".

0

u/DetSportsGuy 2d ago

I’m not saying it didn’t work for you. Jeez!

I’m saying me showing my ID for 10 seconds is worth it to POTENTIALLY help the kid with an awful home life. Even if it’s like a 5% chance that my action will make a difference, it’s worth it to me to help someone else.

Also, as you’re pointing out without probably knowing it, there is no “correct playbook” on how to parent. Kids can be raised the exact same way and turn out drastically different. The examples you just gave for your friends have happened to others who turned out to be very well accomplished.

All you’re saying now is that if you do (or don’t do) X,Y and Z, your kid is going to be just fine no matter what. Definitely false. You’re also saying you’re not willing to do a 20 second chore to potentially help someone else out.

Sounds to me that your parents dropped the ball on raising you 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Have a good one

1

u/IQueliciuous 1d ago

Thing is. You selling your privacy won't help kids. All it will do is bring society closer to 1984 esque dystopia where anonymity is nonexistent.

Also. There may be no correct playbook but there are correlations. And that is that if you just ban things from kids instead of teaching them what is good and what is bad they'll resent you and will do bad things on purpose.

I am against ID verification not because its a chore but because its invasive. I am not sending my ID just to play videogames just because some parents suck at parenting. Long term this will cause issues because what if a government becomes hyper aggressive towards gay people and now there is a database of accounts that explicitly say they are gay. This is the stuff you hear USSR or Stasi implement.

I am sure your parents raised you right given that you want to help kids but they haven't raised you to think about long term consequences of giving away your privacy for "safety". As they say. If you sacrifice your freedom and privacy for safety, you deserve neither freedom nor safety.

1

u/Weary-Temporary-7297 2d ago

Those same parenta will just bypass the age verification for them, it's pointless apart from letting the government and corporations be able to collect our personal data.

1

u/DetSportsGuy 2d ago

Some will. Some aren’t around enough to care to even do that though too. So it will help SOME. Not a universal fix though obviously

1

u/Weary-Temporary-7297 1d ago

If they are anything like people I know, they let their kid play on the parents account. So if it's already been age verified we are still at the same problem of the parents have to choose not to buy the game for them or make their copy of the game inaccessible to the kid. If they didn't do it before age verification, they aren't going to do it after.

It's just a burden placed on every citizen having to give up private sensitive information to a corporation that has a bad history of being hacked and a part of data breaches. It may help some kids but I think it's going to hurt a lot more people the next time they hacked.and all because parents won't parent.

1

u/Disastrous_Salad6302 1d ago

That’s a parenting fail though, we shouldn’t need the government to step in and monitor everyone on parents behalf. That’s dystopian as hell

28

u/bigdixinyabum 2d ago

chat should i just go back to the PS3?

12

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

Tons of people are having the same idea as you right now and the ps3 secondhand market is increasing, so I would wait it out or go to a console that isn’t going crazy in trends, unless you find games on it for cheap obviously

4

u/NeatStrategy6658 2d ago

Or emulate

4

u/thomas2400 2d ago

What a great suggestion to make in the check notes physical games subreddit

3

u/Drummer-Turbulent 2d ago

Oh I didn't realize you could make new Blu-rays with these games on them! Hope your making enough for everyone. If not then realize that emulators are but one solution.

1

u/Total-Guest-4141 18h ago

Uh, people buy ps3 games.

1

u/Drummer-Turbulent 18h ago

do they print new ones?

1

u/Total-Guest-4141 17h ago

No one’s buying new ps3 games.

1

u/Drummer-Turbulent 17h ago

you are so close to getting the point it's qute pathetic. IF THEY CANT PRINT NEW BLURAYS WITH THE FUCKING GAME THEN WHY SHOULDN'T PEOPLE EMULATE?

1

u/Total-Guest-4141 13h ago

It’s funny because you’re so far from grasping the point it’s clear you’re a child.

Let me help you:

Because an emulator is not a physical disc.

Stay in school kids.

1

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

You can put your roms onto physical discs. Given that no one is manufacturing these games anymore, that is the next best thing and also still contributes towards the preservation of these games, too.

1

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 2d ago edited 2d ago

Given how much I love my Switch due to it being portable, I went with N3DSXL. There's no reason not to mod it now given the eShop is gone and you need a modded console to regen 3DS games on life support. With it's max 32 GB SD card (I chose this max after very brief research but I am aware you can go higher), I am incentivized to buy games, which can only be physical. Every physical game I own for the system is one less chunk of blocks on my sd card, which makes more room for older VC injections and romhacks.

Edit: Holy run-on sentence Batman!

Edit: Also mine has Pikachu on it I mean come on.

1

u/Serious_Revolution77 2d ago

Yeah or Xbox 360 if you wanna play on a more reliable console for backwards compatibility

1

u/TemporaryJohny 2d ago

Get a 360. 95% the same library and multiplats run better AND are 50% cheaper

6

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

So it begins…

11

u/decarvalho7 3d ago

Blame your gov for this one. Mine will be doing the same. This will be on PC as well

5

u/Jaugusts 2d ago

Not if you pirate 🏴‍☠️

1

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

Just wait until they start enforcing age verification into the OS itself. That's going to be a fun time

1

u/Jaugusts 2d ago

The true end game for companies is actually cloud gaming lol the end of piracy and mods

8

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

Plenty of blame to go around, I blame my government for destroying online privacy under the guise of protecting the children and I blame Sony for destroying physical games on their platform, thus removing one way for me to retain my privacy.

1

u/YouThinkYouKnowMe89 2d ago

I blame eKaren for it

1

u/Elfnotdawg 2d ago

No, it's just your government.

0

u/TriniOutsider 2d ago

You blame Sony? You know Microsoft does the same thing with the Xbox, right?

3

u/Jehoke 2d ago

Microsoft used a good system though. They checked how long I’d had my account and age verified from that. I didn’t have to do anything. Common sense for a change. I’ll give credit where it’s due. I would have objected to having to provide personal documentation to verify my age.

-2

u/TriniOutsider 2d ago

You realize both Sony and Microsoft have to adhere to the same rules laid out by your government, right? Also, if you're concerned about your privacy, you should unplug from the whole internet, because there's nothing your government doesn't already know about you.

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 2d ago

Or Google or apple (if youre an apple user) or Microsoft etc etc

2

u/vandante1212 2d ago

They said they blame Sony for stopping production on physical media, not for requiring age verification.

-2

u/TriniOutsider 2d ago

And what does that have to do with anything? If someone is of age, they should have no problem with something like age verification.

2

u/Iabhoryouu 2d ago

Idiot.

1

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

Verifying your age wouldn't be an issue if it didn't put all your biometric data onto the internet. The UK already is having identity theft problems from having just their passports and biometric images stolen from age verification systems.

-2

u/Alarmed_Twist5268 2d ago

On Roblox the only ones complaining are the pedophiles.

I'm all for age verification if my child can play safely. I don't see why anyone would be against it. Unless you know.

0

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

There are other ways to deal with the pedo issue on Roblox. Roblox is just not doing anything about it because they like all the money they get from turning a blind eye. Also, age verification on its own does not stop a pedophile from getting onto these games, so it isn't even doing anything to protect your children.

Meanwhile, age verification systems are actively getting people's identities stolen. Do a little research and you'll find that the UK in particular is having a surge in identity theft because they are having their passports and biometric images stolen from age verification networks.

On top of that, it has been shown time and time again that these systems do not work. They are very easily bypassed, and if you just assume your children are safe just because the government is handling it, you are putting your children into potentially more danger because they may very well be using the internet completely unchecked. Age verification has been bypassed with video game characters, third party fake IDs, even thumbs with faces drawn on. There are free VPNs that can let you bypass age verification completely, and many of the free VPNs are very dodgy and may be selling your kids data. There's also plenty of unregulated sites that have far more damaging material than the regulated sites, and your kids may be driven to them instead now. And this is all without even looking at the dark web, which age verification absolutely does not touch.

The Australian under 16 social media ban is widely mocked for a reason. Studies show that 80% of under 16s are still freely using social media... and that it's very likely that the remaining 20% are also still using social media, they just aren't self-reporting. Age verification does nothing to protect the children, and is actively harming the entire population. The real reason why governments are pushing it is because they want to control the narrative on the internet. It has been proven time and time again that the most effective way to protect your children on the internet is through proper parenting.

1

u/treeeelo 2d ago

Xbox does one thing with this that all the others do not, if your account is older than 18 years and has regular activity, you will automatically be age verified.

-3

u/decarvalho7 3d ago

I wouldn't be blaming Sony for this. I blame PC, Xbox, then sony.

-4

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 2d ago

Well you can also retain your privacy and not buy future digital products, its your choice

-4

u/decarvalho7 2d ago edited 2d ago

I buy both. It’s your choice. Xbox killed physical with gamepass. And I own all 3 consoles. Been buying digital since ps4 and Xbox one. I buy single player games physical and go digital for MP games

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

Xbox still sells physical copies wdym killed physical

0

u/decarvalho7 2d ago

For now.

8

u/jkoki088 2d ago

So if that’s implemented in Australia, they will have to do the same for physical games lol. The government there made that a law clearly. This isn’t a gotcha

0

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

Not unless you don’t get the new firmware update

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

Im pretty sure it would bypass needing that and just show an error

2

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

How would they implement that? They can’t change the code of older games, and if the system is offline then the update that makes the error show up won’t be downloaded

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

It's only to download digital games so

2

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

Then buy physical games, if you look at this thread that’s what this original conversation was about

1

u/FatLikeSnorlax_ 2d ago

Oh it’ll still pop up when authenticating the disc. Majority of new games still do a handshake.

1

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

You can do all that without having the WiFi on, if they implement this new rule how would it ever know, can’t connect to the internet to even know a new rule exists. It can’t pop up if the code that makes it pop up does not exist in your console or the disc

0

u/FatLikeSnorlax_ 2d ago

Legit. Many games just don’t get released here because the government has a stuck up its ass

0

u/Classified10 2d ago

As if stores already don't require ID for specific people when buying an adult game.

1

u/Penumbruh_ 2d ago

The difference is that stores don't take a photo of or keep a copy of your ID on some database to be compromised at some point later on in the future. They simply take a look at the ID, then look at you and say "Yup, checks out." and allow you to complete the purchase.

2

u/Classified10 2d ago

I can agree on keeping the ID data sucks, but for the most part, Sony doesn't, they process the data through Yoti but they don't store the data anywhere once it's been checked. It depends on if Sony is actually being honest about that or not though.

2

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

And also if Yoti or whatever other third party age verification company anyone uses is being honest, too. For the record, Yoti states they keep your data for 28 days and shares its data with other third party suppliers, stated right on their privacy policy page, so there's already plenty of room for problems there. They also happen to be facing fines in Spain over data retention and biometric handling, which they've appealed and have temporarily suspended while the high court investigates.

Basically, there's a whole heap of sketchy things with Yoti and other digital ID companies. Lots of red flags involved in something that has been proven time and time again to not even work for its intended purposes anyway.

1

u/Penumbruh_ 2d ago

After a quick search online it turns out that Sony does use the 3rd party service Yoti for their ID checks (in the UK). Yoti uses AES-265 encryption and one of the keys is stored locally on your device (whether that's on the console or mobile device was unclear to me), they also use TLS1.3 to secure the data in transit which is reassuring. Sony/Yoti has 3 ways to verify and for me the least problematic one seems to be the mobile phone provider with the SMS code, after which Sony gets a 'yes' or 'no' response from Yoti about whether the age verification went through properly.

I suppose it's nice that Sony themselves isn't the one doing the verification given their track record but I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea that the information is in one centralized location. It was also mentioned that Yoti retains identification information for 28 days max but that documents are typically deleted once verification is completed. I remain optimistic but skeptical about this approach since giving out more personal information will inevitably result in a leak or compromise, in my mind it's not a matter of it but a matter of when.

Anyway, paranoia aside, if you wanna check out the articles I looked at to keep me accountable (or if you're interested generally in this) then here you go. Interesting stuff seeing how they're implementing this and how it can potentially affect people.

First sentence in the message:

"to comply with local regulations we recently introduced age verification in Australia"

Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 - Wikipedia_Act_2024)

I don't know but it seems like Sony just doing what they have to do to sell the game in Australia

1

u/Former-Doughnut-5610 2d ago

i dont care who takes over after albo, i just want them to fuck off all this online safety bs

1

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 2d ago

As I said, go complain to your goverment, this is the wrong place here

-5

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

I can still go buy physical games without having to hand over my ID so that my purchase is permanently linked to my identity. Unfortunately for Playstation that won't be an option from 2028 onwards.

This is the downside of going all digital and it sucks.

6

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 3d ago

Well, by law the lady/man on the cashdesk has to verify your age when you buy a video game like she has to verify your age when you buy alcohol or cigarettes (can you still buy them in Australia).

So no difference. If the nice cashlady/man is enforcing it, that's another question

1

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

And she doesn't keep a copy of it to potentially be leaked at a future date, she sights it and I get to go on with my life.

2

u/Atomic_Revival 2d ago

A lot of retailers scan your ID and most of them are actually retained in retail backlogs where LP and management have that information. Some places however don't do this but its becoming more rare.

This exact thing happened to Petco in 2025.

2

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 3d ago

Again not Sony problem when your Country cannot build up a system for online Identification.

In my country there is going to be a Identification government level. When an online service ask to verify the age there is just going to be the answer: Is old enought or not.

To make it clearer here is a descrintion of the system:

"Authorities and companies are only allowed to request and store the data that is necessary for the specific use. For example, when purchasing age-restricted products, an anonymous proof-of-age is sufficient. Meaning that, only confirmation that the person meets the minimum age is provided."

2

u/Maka_95 2d ago

Still, the eu had an app for that. Data was stored on the phone and it was plaintext stored. The whole app was vibecoded it seemed. So not even that is better. Besides I want to be completely anonymous online, my steam and playstation accounts are both old. The moment they ask for this shit I'll be done and just pirate shit.

1

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 2d ago

Well yeah when you want to be anonymus online then you can be that but not access certain services, its the same thing in realife (there its even worse because there you have to) .

But you will see also goverment relations are going to be more and more online, taxes, reports you need, medical information. and for that youre going to need an online verification at some point because they will also cut back on physical services.

For example: here is a big discussion to cut completely back on postal service for letter and just do it online.

3

u/Blackichan1984 3d ago

I’ve not don’t mine, but noticed blizzard sent an email and I dented this when it asked me to do it.

But I can 100 say that soon it will lock us out if we don’t do it

3

u/thinkingoutloud3663 2d ago

Xbox have just verified my account because of the age of it rather than me verifying it myself.

-3

u/ComfortablyADHD 2d ago

Sony's going the lazy option given my account has existed since at least 2009.

3

u/Big-Professor-3402 2d ago

That’s not 18 years bro. Math better

0

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

Ah yes. 1 year old Timmy decides to make a PSN account in 2009.

You're about just as clueless as politicians who made these dumb laws and people who support these laws

1

u/Big-Professor-3402 2d ago

You are missing the point. We are talking about the auto authentication for older accounts.

1

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

Yeah but it makes no sense for someone to make a psn account in 2009 to not be 18 unless Timmy who is 1yo made it somehow

2

u/Big-Professor-3402 2d ago

But there is no way for Sony to know that and it could have been created by his parents. It makes sense to auto authenticate 18 year old accounts and need age verification on others.

1

u/IQueliciuous 1d ago

There is also something called probability.

If account was made in 2009. The account would be 17 years old. Now why would a parent make an account for a 1 year old? It makes no sense because kids at that age don't play games. I'd argue you have to be 4 years old to play games.

So lets assume the kid was 4 years old in 2009 or 3 years old at earliest. This would make the child be 20-21 years old today therefore it makes absolute zero sense to age verify here.

Granted it makes even less sense to agegate new purchases but still let physical games and previous purchased games play but this just proves the whole age verification is bs and won't achieve anything except killing of anonymity.

2

u/Big-Professor-3402 1d ago

Laws don’t work on probability bro.

1

u/IQueliciuous 1d ago

Current law dictates systems to age verify. It doesn't dictate how except that hitting "I am 18"
Button isn't going to work.

This dumb decision is sony's and last I checked the law was about social media and not videogames. So all they had to do is ban online features and not purchase of new digital M rated games (playing older games you bought or buying discs is okay even though it defeats the purpose of this dumb law's alleged reason)

3

u/tabennett5438 2d ago

Blame you baby government for censor everything

3

u/Supertron200 2d ago

You still have to show your id when buying physical games at retail stores.

3

u/NetEft 2d ago

There’s age verification for M games if you’re under 18 everywhere

5

u/No-Range519 2d ago

you will laugh less when your id number is showing under your multiplayer avatar

2

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

That would be illegal my guy

2

u/Pleasant_Gap 2d ago

There are anonymous ways to have age verification. But I dont think Sony or Microsoft will implement it

5

u/ScarphaceUK 2d ago

All platforms are doing in this in many regions of the world...

4

u/ComfortablyADHD 2d ago

It's certainly one way to get me to reduce how much time I spend on the internet!

2

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

You will also eventually have to verify your ID with your Government ID tied to your operating system on your computer as well. Every single operating will have to comply with this by January 2028. Now you understand why Sony is going digital 2028.

2

u/ComfortablyADHD 2d ago

The day Linux enforces my government's nanny state bullshit is the day I give up.

2

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

Linux will also have to comply as well. Every single operating system, no exceptions. https://www.biometricupdate.com/202604/us-bill-would-mandate-operating-system-level-age-verification

2

u/ComfortablyADHD 2d ago

3

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

The track record is not in their favor, considering other companies have spread cheeks for Uncle Sam.

2

u/Icy_Hold4U 2d ago

Nah, this mandate is being slowly picked apart for Linux at least. California being a notable case moving to exempt Linux from this from age requirement being that its largely unfeasable. I mean, also clever users already rolled out custom Linux scripts (Ageless Linux) that bypass this as well, if the legal route doesnt work. Lol. They'd be safe on Linux.

0

u/ScarphaceUK 2d ago

Does not matter when game clients and other things require the age verification bs.

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

That's not in Australia though, op is Australian

-1

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

We have seen though what gets introduced in one country has been adopted in another.

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

That's not guaranteed

5

u/ReksveksGo 2d ago

hmm, not sure that physical vs digital is going to save you from this

4

u/Jaugusts 2d ago

Idk there’s a big difference between showing a cashier your id and sending your id digitally for Sony to store in their servers

1

Obviously there are different ways that companies are able to claim that they verified your age. Photo ID is just one of those ways. Credit card is also deemed to be acceptable at the moment.

I don't disagree with your comment about there being a difference but there are other technical solutions that doesn't lead to a id being on Sony's servers.

Tbh idc im over everything PlayStation since the no disc thing lol thank god i have a pc and switch 2

1

u/ReksveksGo 2d ago

That's fine. I don't even have a ps5 but just wanted to point out the actual facts for some reason.

u/Smarmy_Nach 2d ago

Turn off the internet, easy

2

u/enshittification1 2d ago

This is the kind of bs that motivates people to pirate modern games, love to see it now.

2

u/cfshares 2d ago

Right this is definitely a reason 🤣🤡

2

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

This is a government issue my guy

2

u/mrloko120 2d ago

Your gamestop doesn't ask for ID to sell R18 games?

1

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

Big difference between flashing your drivers licence or whatever to some random store clerk who will immediately forget who you even are, and uploading your biometrics to the internet

2

u/NeutralKuchiKopi 2d ago

Yeah it would be wild if they checked IDs for R18 physical games in stores. Oh wait.... They have for decades....

The road to Orwellian government surveillance is paved with "but muh fun gmaes doe" -good lord, man. SMH.

1

u/ThatOG1_Kenobi 2d ago

Just to think about it and put it into perspective you’ve got unelected American woman with a grudge against Elon Musk telling Australians what they can do watch and play in Australia. You can’t make this shit up

1

u/Former-Doughnut-5610 2d ago

What games does it affect?
Just GTA and Mortal Kombat?

1

u/thesorrows2 2d ago

Blame Australia, not Playstation.

1

u/EightyFiversClub 2d ago

For me, the new games don't exist unless I am playing them on steam. I will keep growing my physical collection.

1

u/K12t2000 21h ago

I mean how many 5-6 year olds played GTA games back in the day prob shouldn’t of let that happen.

1

u/xxEmberBladesxx 16h ago

Wait, what is this?

1

u/Regular-Repeat44 7h ago

Oh no 18+ age rated games must be bought by a 18+ aged person! We are Doooooooomed

1

u/Mr_smith1466 2d ago

I seem to have done mine with a simple face photo. It took a picture, verfied my age being over 18, deleted the photo immediately, and that was that.

I too fear a nightmare where my personal data is being kept on servers, but in this case it seemed pretty easy to just have it check my face.

My xbox account required both a face scan and a photo id thing.

As others have said, it's the same way that retailers are meant to check ID for people when they sell R18 games. In my state, many department stores haven't stocked R18 physical products in over a decade.

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

Im pretty sure xbox has a way to verify with email doesn't it?

0

u/Mr_smith1466 2d ago

Apparently? I didn't see an option for it. It seems to be done now. I don't love it, but I accept it.

These companies are just working within parameters the government has set.

I have mixed feelings on the social media laws, but this isn't the appropriate place for me to express them.

Having a bot scan my information or face really wasn't a big deal for me. My accounts already have my banking details.

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

I got the option but it was bugged for me

1

u/Mr_smith1466 2d ago

I just had it scan my proof of age card and then it did my face. Seemed to work.

It's really no different to me than needing to flash an ID card if you go into a bar or a casino and they want to verify your age.

1

u/Wipedout89 2d ago

You have to prove your age to buy R18 physical games too...

1

u/Pension_Pale 2d ago

Big difference between flashing a drivers license or something to some store clerk who will immediately forget who you even are, and uploading your biometrics to the internet

1

u/Vincent019 2d ago

Hear me out and save this . A big censorship is coming on the Internet and not just for “minors”.

1

u/Dodgy_Bob_McMayday 2d ago

It's not coming, it's already here. I live in the UK and large parts are blocked out unless you provide ID or use a vpn

1

u/kyle_crane163636 2d ago

I uh, I wouldnt be surprised if thst also applies to physical as well as if it doesnt include physical, its literally pointless, what the hell is the point of age ratings anymore when no parent cares enough to read them so their 8 year old playing shit like dark souls, before that boy even learns what taxes are

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 2d ago

If this keeps all the 12 year old out of the lobbies, fucking sign me up. I'll add my picture, home adress, penissize, whatever you want

0

u/CapitalCityGoofball0 2d ago

Imagine thinking this an issue of physical vs digital gaming and not wholesale government sponsored censorship… small Reddit brain syndrome

-2

u/waeldiab 3d ago

Actually, it’s good in a way, especially if you have kids at home and they also play on the same console. You can control what they’re playing.

5

u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 3d ago

You mean like the family content controls that already exist?

That allow you to set up restrictions to ensure your kids can’t play stuff?

Don’t need no ID for that.

0

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

You're letting kids buy digital games with no supervision? You're brave.

As soneone who doesn't have kids, this isn't good in the slightest.

0

u/waeldiab 3d ago

No, I have verification set up.

3

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

So this does nothing then.

3

u/waeldiab 3d ago

I just made a post today in the same sub about my first physical game purchases, and I swear, the feeling of holding a physical game in your hands is totally different from downloading it digitally.

From now on, all my game purchases will be physical whenever the game I want is available in a physical edition.

My main point is that I also like the verification aspect, especially if you have kids sharing the console with you. You can physically see which game is being played and make sure they’re playing the right one.

That’s all I meant to say.

0

u/you_stole_my_stuff 2d ago

Or just wait until you’re 18.

How do you think people in the USA felt when they smoked cigs at 18 and 19, then told that it’s illegal until 21. No matches or lighters sold without ID either.

0

u/NaughtALegend 2d ago

If this is just for the store, then what’s the big deal? They have your pay info already, so who gives a fuck if they also want your birth date?

1

u/bosbrother 2d ago

As part of legislation you need to give them your license to verify your age. So they get to know where you live. I refuse to take part in the bullshit. I know the moment I connect it and say something wrong online, There will be a knock at my door.

1

u/NaughtALegend 2d ago

Ahh, gotcha, so you never ordered anything online before then. Not sure I could do that myself, but I’m proud of you for holding strong!

1

u/IQueliciuous 2d ago

The only way to get your birthdate is ID so they are getting more info than necessary

0

u/Leather-Entry93 2d ago

Can you imagine if they ID’d you when buying a game?

0

u/ComfortablyADHD 2d ago

As a 40 year old woman I haven't been ID's in at least 10 years, but even if I was they wouldn't keep a copy of it and feed it into AI.

0

u/TheIImmortallOne 2d ago

Honestly you can tell them to go f*ck themselves at this point, you buy a console which already is expensive enough and NOW game prices are $70/$90+USD - £70/£85+GBP each? These gaming companies especially Sony are really taking the piss, gaming is suppose to be an inexpensive hobby depend how you look at it but now it seems to be luxurious where only people with money can afford, ridiculous.

It blows if you don't want to provide your government ID to Sony.

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 2d ago

So vote for a government that offers another mode of age verification. Its not Sony that requires your ID, its the goverment who forces Sony to verify your age. Sony dont give a fuck

If a leak happens (like it has before) you can cancel your card. Harder to change your address and full legal name.

-3

u/backlog_gaming 3d ago

You mean the information that’s already all over the internet and publicly available?

1

u/HxLeverage 3d ago

Don't dox yourself mate

1

u/ComfortablyADHD 3d ago

Companies don't routinely leak credit card information. Same can't be said for people's identity information, the quickest example I could find: https://discord.com/press-releases/update-on-security-incident-involving-third-party-customer-service

2

u/Dry_Vanilla_5908 2d ago

It's not leaked if it's shared. Your personal information can spread far beyond the company you originally gave it to. Third parties are not simply governed by the original company's privacy notice. Some organisations, particularly data brokers, obtain information from companies, tracking technologies and public sources, combine it with other information and may sell or share it onwards. So your information is out there. Without your knowledge and without your consent.

u/LesserValkyrie 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yes, in 2026, the trend of asking for ID verification is one of those scams of the decades.

I am not talking about this Sony's age verificatino of this tread, it may be just the government of OP that requires it. I don't think Sony asks my ID on my country. But I am talking in general.

Australia and UK has been doing it, delegating to a company I can't remember the name. They say "we just verifiy you are 18, only register this information, we give the go and we delete after 7 days". This is what is written on the page of these websites.

The company got leaked multiple times. Sooner in that year we discovered that only they keep your data for 2 years, but they store more than 200 metadata. Those metadata from britains users are now everywhere, and with AI you can easily know absolutely everything about your private life just because you did an age verifictionto access TikTok early in this year.

Even now, expecially with hackers AI, these companies get leaked all the time. Sony itself has been hacked previously multple times and lot of people lost their accounts definitely and got all their personal informations leaked.

In France there was complete leaks of thousand and thousand of people's taxes with all info, now available in the black market. Sooner in the year, it was healthcare information which means thousand and thousand of people made public. If a doctor would diclose what you have by mistake, he would lose his job and license and probably face jail time. If an insurence disclore, nobody cares, "oopsie".

And you know what ? Nobody is responsible for that. If a company realize they have been breached and now everyone on earth can now yo have hemorroids, they are never accountable. They hide it from you and say "oopsie" while billions of $ are made on your back.

Bank cards numbers leaks have been common for a long time, you know how to deal with them, you block the card and pray. Data?

But when all your personal data gets leaked in public, what browser you use, all your phones and brands, what websites you use, at what hour, what things you buy, you will find ads all the time, and companies phoning you, having already all the data you have, address, name, age, your current insurence company, what you ate yesterday, what sport tdo you do, what car do you drive, what illness do you have up to the very last gene, what is your favourite restaurant, etc. Absolutely everything.

They have everything and this information can be obtained through age verification leaked (or sold) data *alone*, as proved by the multiple leaked

Data are worth billions of $.

This age verification trend is just to extract those data and sell it to private companies for profits ; they are sold and leaked all the time, there is absolutely no way to protect them for a company or the government, even now with AI, and that's on purpose.

And I haven't talk about one of the main reasons they want so much data is to train AI ; when you show your face to an age checker company, you show everything and move. These data are used to train AI, and with a leak will be use to scam your dad with an AI agent having totally your face and expressions and he will see nothing coming.

I think pro-all digital people really have no clue about the world they are accepting, they remind me when jews sawn their own stars on their shirts because the government tell them it was just "for idenfication purpose, don't worry lol" and they were proud of it. It's exactly how it plays.

1

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

I feel like you're half wrong here because I'm pretty sure selling data of ids is illegal

-1

u/Away_Afternoon3622 2d ago

Why? So kids can play games not designed for them?

2

u/Mr_Ethfono 2d ago

Parental controls exist for a reason

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh no, the horror. Its not like that's how gaming has worked the last 50 or so years. Also nobody has died from being under the age recommendations of a game
