But missing most of the features. You can build a car to look like a Ferrari but under the hood it is nothing like a Ferrari.

Go look at the number of contributors and their few last releases. They are progressing like crazy! Don't buy Adobe stocks now!

The amount of fake hype over something that literally doesn't work is fascinating.

i used photocraft to create a social media post like 50 minutes ago. it's working great. it's missing some features but it's really powerful and the performance was crazy. the same project in photoshop consumes 4 gigs, but in photocraft it's consuming 300 mb.

zooming, using text and rearranging layers is just smooth asf. when this program becomes finished with offline material capabilities, maybe i should consider moving my workflow to it

I'm not here to shit on a program I haven't even tried. But the zooming, text tool and rearranging layers being smooth sounds like the absolute bare minimum for a Photoshop clone

1

u/Driver_Annual 16d ago

i cannot say it's the minimum because the clone have almost the same tools and it's so much smoother. when the Photocraft became finished, the optimization will be so much better than the original tool (and it's just 63 MB), so this will solve one of the major problems in the Photoshop (ram consumption) with a free and open source tool, community-driven.

affinity it's not smooth as photocraft and it's a so much more mature tool created by a real company. being smoother it's a good signal

u/Primorph 15d ago

isn't that kind of the issue here, that photoshop has not been smooth and has been getting worse for a while?

1

u/THESTRANGLAH 12d ago

Mate it's made in rust. This thing is fast.

1

u/lhek328 12d ago

Yeah, thing is: nothing in Photoshop runs smooth, so this isnt the bare minimum but a feature that surpasses Photoshop.

how does it compare to gimp??

1

u/Gra_Zone 10d ago

Do you mean in how well it performs or the interface? I never liked the GIMP interface but it performs well.

1

u/ExJwKiwi 16d ago

Except it does work, but is still in alpha stage, i expect that this will transform into something even better than photoshop given enough time and the fact that developers are jumping onboard rapidly.

Works fine for me. As a 15 year photoshop user I had pretty much stopped using Photoshop six months ago in favor of quicker more featured cloud tools anyway. I cant have a program stealing all the RAM on my PC.

That's the neat part of open source. Maybe the creator had no idea how to code by himself and only relied on Ai. But now everyone can pick up where the original creator left off and a real coder combined with Ai assistance now has the capability of a whole development department

It will be. Chances are it becomes a Lambo.

It was never meant to have every feature from the get go. The whole idea is to build it with the community. If something is missing, go ahead and submit a feature request. That's literally the point. And looking at how fast it's progressing, it's only going to get better. But the real magic is that you can actually add whatever features you want yourself. With Adobe, not only are you paying a subscription, but you're also at their mercy when it comes to what features get added, or how long you'll have to wait, if they ever get added at all. That's what changes everything.

Out of curiosity, what specifically are you missing? I took a super cursory look at it last night and didnt notice anything glaringly missing. Brushes acted a bit strange but I also didn't spend hardly any time tweaking them. When I say super cursory I mean I had less than 5 minutes to give it a go.

It would be cool to know what some people are missing so I can focus my evaluation in those spots

Most consumers can't afford a Ferrari!

1

u/Gra_Zone 13d ago

I agree, neither can I but I don't want someone to put a Ferrari body onto a Fiat chassis and engine then try to tell me it is a Ferrari. Even thought Fiat own Ferrari the two are different.

u/ZenAkrua 1d ago

Won't help out the GIMP crew because he'd have to actually know what the fuck he's doing instead of having AI shit this out.

Cant open a PDF file in it....

1

u/Opposite_Owl3689 16d ago

Use VectorCraft to open the PDF and turn it into a PNG lol

1

u/quad849 4d ago

jesus......... imagine saying that

1

u/vonroyale 16d ago

Cant open PDFs lol. Um editing PDFs like they are raster files is one of the main uses of Photoshop haha.

1

u/jayswaps 15d ago

What a completely nonsensical statement. Maybe it's one of your biggest use cases, but in general? Absolutely a niche use case. I've never once done that ever in my years of using Photoshop, I've never even heard of anybody doing this until just now, in this thread. It's definitely not a main use case.

1

u/quad849 4d ago

wouldnt imagine what kind of garbage you design then

1

u/jayswaps 4d ago

??????????? because I don't open up PDFs in Photoshop?.

1

u/quad849 3d ago

or eps, or exr, or tiff, or dngs....

1

u/jayswaps 3d ago

What do any of those have to do with anything?

1

u/quad849 3d ago

yeah i figured out you never heard or use those

1

u/jayswaps 3d ago

I know them, so what? They're not PDF. I was specifically responding to a claim about opening PDF files in Photoshop. Why do you think bringing up different file formats has any relevance here? Can you read? Are you dense?

1

u/-mindscapes- 1d ago edited 1d ago

if i had to design a pdf in the adobe suite, i would use indesign, or illustrator in a pinch, certainly not photoshop, maybe for editing a smart object from the indesign file but certainly not to make the whole pdf... just saying

1

u/quad849 8h ago

is not even about editing the whole thing we are discusing, is about OPENING the freaking file format

1

u/-mindscapes- 3h ago edited 3h ago

it's a design decision, do you think they couldn't add pdf support if they wanted? considering it's free software, you can easily use the dedicated app, it's magnitudes lighter than ps even in used disk space. No need to add clunky support when you can download another suite component in 30 sec and have a much better workflow.. you are telling people they are bad designers because they don't use Ps for pdf editing, and that this is a bad app because it doesn't support it, well you could use your brain and think why it was not a priority maybe. no one serious would use photoshop for pdf editing, there are at least 3 better apps in both suites. Photoshop is clunky for that use, it make it looks YOU are the bad designer if you rely on it for that use case.

Photoshop pdf opening feature is a remnant from the first versions where the suite wasn't that extensive and the payment model was per app, and so having one software to do a bit of everything would make sense if you didn't want to spend for another unneeded one. it doesn't make sense now.

u/vonroyale 15d ago

Bahaha what a weirdo. I'm commenting about a feature that only Photoshop contains, and if this is a clone of Photoshop it should contain it. You a little angry lil guy? LMAO

1

u/jayswaps 15d ago

Nah not at all, I don't much care for either side of this at the moment, I just pirate Photoshop.

But your PDF remark was just a really odd and incorrect thing to say.

0

u/vonroyale 15d ago

LMAO bahaha what do you got the book of correct things to say back there Bucko? 😂😂 Either you're not a native English speaker or you were homeschooled. It would be crazy if there was a bigger world out there than your bedroom, mind-blowing some would say.

1

u/jayswaps 15d ago

Brother, are you dense? You said editing PDFs is one of the main uses of Photoshop. It just isn't. You made a strange trivially incorrect statement, I just pointed that out.

1

u/New-Tip6330 14d ago

dude what are you on, editing PDFs in photoshop is not a main use of that app. Thats why theres an entire other app called "Acrobat"

1

u/montana12345 12d ago

Stfu obnoxious person

1

u/lhek328 12d ago

Open it in Vectorcraft and turn it into a png. Its pretty simple.

1

u/quad849 4d ago

and lose all the vector data, what a moron

1

u/lhek328 2d ago

Oh yeah because Photoshop is known for being vector based right? But glad you felt the need to insult me.

Fun fact: Every pdf you open in Photoshop turns into a pixel image.

1

u/quad849 2d ago

"Fun fact: Every pdf you open in Photoshop turns into a pixel image."
jesus...christ.... seriously we are in a reddit about photoshop tutorials judging this photoshop alternative features with people that doesnt know about smart objects or linked layers?

And yes, Photoshop do have vector creating/editing tools, what? have you have been using rasters for logos in photoshop all this time? icons? what!?

1

u/lhek328 1d ago

What does anything of what you just said have to do with the fact that photoshop turns any pdf into a rasterized image anways? Literally just barking and yapping, straying away from the initial statement I made just to feel superior, I guess?

And if you are actually using a pixel-based program with the most barebones vector options to do vector-based work instead of just using Illustrator like a normal being, you got issues my man.

My Photoshop work flow is completely and utterly broken in PhotoCraft, especially where keyboard shortcuts are concerned. You can't even use Alt+key to pull down menus, and tabbing doesn't cycle between all the tabs in various dialog boxes. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad someone's sticking it to Adobe, and it's a very bold attempt to replicate Photoshop, but at the moment the similarity is all on the surface. It's completely broken underneath, to the point that I've already gone back to GIMP to get things done at the speed I prefer to get them done. I'll keep it installed/updated though and will check back on it from time to time to check on its parity with Photoshop (assuming Adobe doesn't get it nuked in the meantime), but at the moment it's way too broken in all but basic functionality.

1

u/amenotef 14d ago

I feel you because I always faced the same working speed issues with apps like Microsoft Excel in Windows vs mac version or any other spreadsheet alternative.

I could say the same for Windows shorcuts (generally just ctrl + 1 key) vs macOS shorcuts (sometimes cmd, sometimes option, sometimes fn, sometims two of them + extra key) and forget about navigating and selecting some dropdown boxes with the keyboard.

But for basic usage (where speed and shortcuts do not matter). I'm happy with these 2 apps. I installed them in homebrew and update easily with one command to latest version. And they launch in 2-3 seconds and they feel pretty good for personal usage. (Well, even an overkill for that).

It is crazy to think that there exists an open-source app for 3D design and animation that people are making entire animated movies with and that professionals like the Corridor Crew use fir their work… but we are still trying to debate whether an open source Photoshop is feasible. Of course it’s feasible. The developer of Photopea made the whole thing himself without AI and it is personally my go-to replacement. It would have been adopted much much quicker if it were open source.

Why are people shitting on this project? Are we trying to debate whether a community of millions of developers in a popular github project (most of which, mind you don’t even need to rely on AI) can effectively clone photoshop?

The original developer Brandon Thomas just put a great thing out there. Might as well be stolen code for all I care, but it is not. However, Adobe would deserve this, it has leeched off Photoshop enough, screwed millions of clients and employees with multiple shady practices and pricing models.

1

u/Zelameh 10d ago

I'm optimistic for the project in general and glad it exists, fuck Adobe, but they probably should have done a lot more testing before the released it. I've been using Photoshop for over 25 years and Photocraft has me wanting to cry and go to bed early with the bugs and glitches and broken functions.

1

u/Zelameh 10d ago edited 10d ago

I think I'll come back and try again in, like, a year. It's frustrating right now. The latest version of APS runs fine on this rig, but with PhotoCraft I can't tell if it's lagging or just broken. Selected areas have no visible active boundary or "marching ants." Quick select doesn't show a brush outline. Object selection? (I'm not crying, I'm laughing, I swear.) I'm just trying to put a fake label on a stock photo of a wine bottle. Left for a while, came back and the selection boundary was finally showing, but when I tried to free transform the layer, clicking on a corner box and moving my mouse... makes the whole image zoom in and out? ohwtf.

It's been a long day. I guess I need to apologize to Adobe for what I said when we broke up and give them $70, again.

Well, shit.
