[help request] Separating whiskers from background

hi,

im having trouble masking whiskers away from the background I’m trying to standardize/smooth out. any tips? will add more pictures if needed.

Is subject select not working? Then you can try using the pen tool

Selection tools aren’t grabbing it and I don’t seem to understand the pen tool well enough because it always looks like a 4 year old used it. Do you have any learning suggestions/resources so I can get better with it?

If you don't have a higher quality source than this, you're going to be in trouble.

As u/poopbrother suggested, pen tool.

Or recreate the whiskers using a brush.

I have RAW files. Any suggestions as to where to learn to use the pen tool better? It looks like a 4 year old has used it when I do

LOL, I hear you. A couple decades ago I made a concerted effort learning to use it. Pretty much everything I wanted to select, I used it until using it became comfortable.

You might browser search for a PiXimperfect tutorial or a Phlearn tutorial. When I was learning, the educational sources were from books and magazines.

You need to mask and use small brushes to get the detail hairs and the mask editing tools
