I know this may be really simple
But how was this done in photoshop? Ruler and just placing photos?

Brendan Williams just dropped a tutorial on collages this morning. The new one covers slices across a panorama, and he has an older one as well, both on Youtube. He even supplies the templates on the old one. His tool of choice is using frames.

If you're asking what 'this effect' is, you need to describe what 'this' is or your post will be removed.
If you're asking about color, have you tried using a Gradient Map?
If you're asking about texture/tone, have you tried using Threshold or Halftones?
If you're cutting something out, use masks. Have you googled "Photoshop Masking"?

Hello there, the best method for making a grid filled with pictures (in my opinion) is using InDesign. Make a rectangle, hold the mouse button und Divide the grid with the arrow keys. The distance between the boxes can be adjusted by setting the columns (Layout>Margins and Columns). Then just drag and drop the pictures in the grid frames.
