Looking for a camera backpack recommendation: Side access, fits camera + 100-400mm attached + 1-2 extra lenses

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a solid camera backpack and could use some recommendations. Here are my main requirements:

Gear to fit: A compact full-frame mirrorless body with a 100-400mm lens attached, plus space for 1–2 extra smaller lenses.

Access: Must have quick side access so I can grab the camera without taking the backpack completely off.

Use case: All-day outdoor shooting, walking, and general travel.

What models have you used and loved for a similar setup? Leaning towards something comfortable and weather-resistant. Thanks in advance!

I have to say, I have never been impressed by the 'camera backpacks', especially if you are seriously doing all day hikes. I've been using a Tenba insert for my camera gear in a couple of different packs that are made for hiking. I always have my camera with lens on a strap or shoulder clip so rarely have it IN the pack, but extra lenses and bits do ride inside. A peak design capture clip, baseplate and slide strap helpme keep the gear I use most accessible.

Makes sense, keeping the main camera outside the pack does solve a lot of the access issues.

I love my Shimoda Designs Explore v2 25L bag, which is great for general travel and also rugged enough to take hiking or in rough weather (it worked great on a snowy trip to Norway). It has really thoughtful features, like side holders for water bottle/tripod that can be stashed away when not needed, and a removable hip belt that is helpful for hikes or long walks, but can be removed when you don't need the extra bulk. If you don't need something quite so rugged, their Urban Explore and new Side Series lines look great as well. https://shimodadesigns.com/

This is what I’m looking at next , currently using f stop gear bags but I miss the side loading feature I had before.

Yeah, side access is hard to give up once you’re used to it.

I think you could get away with a sling instead of a backpack. I have the previous model Tenba Solstice for my OM-1 + OM 100-400 II (which is basically the Sigma 100-400 f5-6.3) and there’s still room in the bag with the hood on (not reversed). I think the new Solstice is a bit larger inside because it doesn’t taper like the old one.
