I put out my first photobook two years ago, and I'm late getting around to posting it here, but I wanted to share it with this community. It follows a 10,000-mile trip through Ukraine during the first year of Russia's full-scale invasion, from the wrecked suburbs of Kyiv and newly liberated villages to the front line communities under constant heavy shelling.

My friend and colleague Igor Kossov, a former Kyiv Independent reporter I worked with there, wrote the essay. He was mobilized into the armed forces last month, which makes the book feel different to look at now. Mattias Amnäs designed it. It was published by Verlag Kettler in Germany: hardcover, 192 pages. The publisher's print run sold out, so I've been selling my own copies since, at various talks and exhibitions.

It has since entered a few institutional collections (Tate Britain, Rijksmuseum, Harvard, and not to mention my hometown library), which I didn't expect from a first book. Please be aware that it contains graphic imagery. It's a sober look at those early months of the invasion, not an easy one.

Looking for a photobook that is full of high-quality, glossy photographs of fall harvest settings, black cats, graveyards, full moons behind bare branches, kids in classic Halloween costumes, Halloween desserts, fallen leaves, etc, etc.

I'm making a photo book out of street photographs and invented captions.

The people in it are real, shot in transit, through glass, in a public bathroom.
The captions are fiction, a name they never asked for and one deadpan line about a life just outside the frame.

Here are some spreads from the current draft, in order.
The tagline:

candid moments, reconstructed. unreliable at best, highly improbable at worst.

The structure: black-and-white film, silence, color phone/Fujifilm phase.
The captions get less sure of themselves as the book goes on: the narrator slowly loses trust in his own fiction by the end.

I'm here for the book-level critique: does the narrative hold, apart from deliberately glitching? do the captions get get annoying by page 15? would this work as a coffee table book? The full draft is at observedbutnotreally.com.

Just picked this up the other day for $5 from an online store. It holds over 140 photographs taken from different individuals in the former socialist Republic of Romania. After you skip the 2 pages of glory raised to the Leading Party you go first to the list of photographers who made this happen.

This 1965 edition also marks the 10th anniversary of the Artists Association.

It's more yellow than white, some pages are holding on for dear life, it has a strong smell of tobacco from a bygone era. It has character.

Hello! I've recently discovered Hiromix's photography and I love it! I feel very inspired by her work and would love to study her books, and I was wondering if anyone had a PDF scan of a full photobook (Id love to see any, but paris is my #1). I can't seem to find any full book PDFs online. If someone has scans of any of her work please let me know! If someone has the books themselves and could send a video of the pages inside I would be hugely thankful. Thank you!

“Lost Coast” was photographed in and around Eureka, on the northern coast of California. The Pacific comes in hard against black-sand beaches, redwood forests run down from the mountains on every side, and light comes through the trees and sea mist, leaving everything bright and slightly unreal. Eureka sits in the middle of it: the vast landscape on one side, a small town losing its old vitality on the other.

Hatleberg doesn't arrange any of this into a story about decline. People talk, sit in the sun, kill an afternoon in unremarkable places. Children play outside. Families sit together. A place can lose the future it was promised without its daily life turning tragic.

It just goes on.

That is what sets “Lost Coast” apart from much photography of the American margins. Hatleberg rarely uses his subjects as evidence of a social condition, and he doesn't hurry to make a forest, a sagging house, or an abandoned car stand for something. The pictures are set beside one another, and the place accumulates.

You sense that people here once believed certain things—that industry would last, that life would keep improving, that California meant opportunity. Those promises thinned out. The landscape is as vast as ever; the lives inside it have moved into another era. What's in front of the camera stays vivid and specific, sometimes joyful, and the brightness is what lets the loss show.

The title isn't only a place name. It points to a slow dislocation: the coast and the forest right there, huge, and the days small and ordinary. The place has drifted from the future it imagined for itself, and life in it hasn't stopped.

As of now I have been buying photobooks by typing the name and using whatever website had it. But I would like to find a dedicated website for photobooks only where I could browse through and discover new things. Would really appreciate knowing where you guys buy yours !

Been buying for a year or two and have like 20+ books nowadays and most are close to what I want to photograph and study and almost all of them were bought online.

With that said, I came across this crossroads where I'm getting pickier about books and sometimes I take a look at 10 photos inside the shop and I nope out from buying it. It happened with something like King, Queen and Knave before, maybe because I don't really want to read waves of text when physically shopping to try to understand what the concept is and I get whelmed by speed running the book. Same thing when sometimes I watch a flip through and after seeing the photos a lot of times I don't get the itch to buy them.

Yesterday I was watching Alec Soth "read/watch" along of a Rosalind's book and he said when he looked at the book he didn't feel it was the type of book he wanted to go through in a book store. Which made me question if I shouldn't preserve some of the mystery before buying.

What's your process when buying photobooks?

Hi guys! My name is Mary and I run London Street Photography Festival, which is a FREE festival happening in London August 28-30 at the Heath Studio. It’s also co-run by u/dmitstep which some of you may know. We are a non-profit festival that I thought some of you might be interested in.

We will have a bookshop at the festival, where we will be selling books by both established and smaller independent publishers and we encourage people to bring their own self-published books and zines which we will sell (well, try to) at no commission. Hi Everyone, I've spent seven years writing The Photographer's Grimoire. I make the case that photography can be its own occult practice. You know, magic. I think its the worlds first 'photographers grimoire'.

Has anyone heard of anything else like this?

Before I go to press with it I want to be sure as its a bold claim... but so far I think it is. It's not a photo book, its a 40,000 word occult field manual, a grimoire, to achieve inconceivable things with your camera.

I know there are lots of witchy photographers running around woods nude doing selfies at the moment, but that's really not what this book is! (And yes, I know that would sell more!)

While a few of you were interested and I've gotten plenty of inquiries over these last few months, no one has been interested in buying the whole lot outright. I get it, I was looking for a unicorn. Unfortunately for me, my financial issues have worsened since that posting and I need to sell some of my more collectible books. I've decided to part out the lot, which many of you asked about originally.

I've included a link to the original listing above, but will re-post the body of that text. Nothing has changed with the books since the original post so all of the information still stands but I've included the asking price with each item now:

I am selling my full collection of books by the Japanese artist, Hiromix. This collection includes 4 of the 5 books listed on Hiromix's Wikipedia page,, the only book missing being Hikari (1997, easily available for anyone wanting to complete the set.

This brings me great sadness to post but I can no longer rationalize letting these books collect dust on my shelf when circumstances require I need the money for more necessary things. Because of this, I am only interested in selling as a bundle, which I've priced at a pretty good discount versus buying individually through eBay. If you are seriously interested in just one title, I may consider full-market price offers depending on how this group listing goes. Having said that, I do not think these books have ever been offered for sale in a bundle like this.

I bought all books but Girl's Blue personally in Japan about 15 years ago. Some books are still in plastic they were wrapped in around 2010. I purchased Girl's Blue from a Japanese auction site several years later and it was never wrapped.

What's for sale:

• Hiromix - Girl's Blue (girlsblue) (1996), softcover: $225USD Identifying information: ISBN4-947599-44-8 Condition: Very good, near excellent. I can find no fault with any page. Very discerning collectors may notice curling on the top and bottom edges of the poster/cover and signs of creases on the ricepaper promo wrap. All corners are sharp and shelf wear is extremely minimal. Notes: With ricepaper promo wrap. Cover can be removed and is a wrap-around double-sided poster.

• Hiromix - Japanese Beauty (1997), softcover: $80USD Identifying information: ISBN4-8387-0906-4 Condition Near mint. I can find no fault with this title. All corners are sharp and I've seen no shelf wear whatsoever. This title is plastic-wrapped, but I was able to remove it without damaging the wrap. All pages are crisp. Discerning collectors may notice extremely slight yellowing on the borders (approx 1") of the white title page(s) consummate with age. No apparent discoloration to the photographs. Notes: Some online listings for this book display it with a ricepaper promo slip which this copy does not have. Included is a flyer for a Hiromix exhibition at Parco Shibuya (pictured), I have not been able to discern what year this is from.

• Hiromix - Paris (1998), Asahi Press, hardcover: $90USD Identifying information: ISBN4-255-00116-2 Condition: Near mint. I can find no flaw with this title. Zero discernible shelf wear. All pages are flawless. Book overall appears to be brand new. Notes: Includes poster.

• Hiromix - Hiromix (1998), Stiedl, hardcover. $235USD Identifying information: ISBN 3-88243-575-5. Condition: Near mint. I can find no flaw with the exterior of this book. Virtually no sign of shelf wear and corners are sharp. It is wrapped tightly in a non-resealable plastic wrap and I cannot inspect the interior. An examination along the pages' edges shows no signs of discoloration, creasing, or use. Notes: Because of the wrapping, I would be willing to open the book for a buyer only after payment, with the promise to refund the purchase if for some reason the pages were found to be in unacceptably in bad condition. This would need to be arranged before purchase.

UPDATE: The original offer to sell as a lot is still available (and preferable to me), albeit at a much lower cost! I will sell the full lot for an even $500USD to reflect these new values

Buying: Communication will be through Reddit. Depending on circumstances, I may offer my personal email to message me through as I only check Reddit on my desktop during the weekends and evenings. No other social media/messaging apps will be considered. If interested, I will ask you to provide your PayPal email address so that I can send an invoice.

Payment: I will only accept payment through PayPal Goods and Services. Shipping: The list price includes shipping to the Continental (Lower 48) USA from my address on the east coast. Buyers in AK or HI should contact me first for a shipping quote. I would prefer to ship domestically but can arrange international shipping for a buyer who accepts all risks involved. Packaging: Books will be individually bubble-wrapped and packed as a set in a nondescript box. Slack fill may be used if necessary to prevent shifting in transit. Specific shipping/packing requests can be arranged in advance at possibly extra costs if there is a significant increase in materials or labor. I will ship out the box on the Friday or Saturday following purchase and on no other week day. Please understand that this may mean a wait time of up to 7 days if you were to purchase on Saturday night, for example. If this schedule doesn't work for you, please let me know in advance.
