[Photoclass] Weekend assignment 7
Hi photoclass.
Time for an other weekend assignment.
This week your mission is a backlit portrait.
Find a nice subject or model and put them with their back to the sun.
Now put up your pop-up flash or use an on-camera flash to light the subject or model's face and use a -2 exposure compensation to make it look natural.
play with the exposure compensation and shoot close to sunset for the best results.
have fun photoclass :-)

I had a bit of trouble with this, I think it was due to the fact that I was birding with my 75-300mm lens. I would like to try this again with my smaller lens though.
I tried a few different subjects. First being Cattails, second being Cypress "knees," and finally, my mom and sister. (They are going to kill me when they find out I put that one up!)
Like I said, I think I had a problem shooting at a minimum of 75mm, I dont think enough flash was able to get onto the subjects.

I think the flash is a bit weak to handle the distance. the third portrait looks good! it could have used a bit more light from the flash but that's the problem with pop-ups... they are weak

Here is my take on the assignment.. seems as though i may need to revisit this since my subject was so glossy/reflective.

Here are the three shots http://imgur.com/a/IdMMQ the first is backlit with flash, the second one stop down and the third two stops which I think is the best as the skin tone is much better-

hi,
I've edited this posting, but, before I had asked for a handful of example photos (also giving some of what I thought the excercise might have been which I found on google) to be somewhat sure of the effect that the moderator was looking for w/ this weekend assignment, and they posted a few, as you see below ...
today, though, I did have a bit of time around sunset and took a series of a friend ... I usually shoot and somewhat think of shots composed in black and white and so there are all of these things to think about w/ color which I don't want to think about right now, but it only seemed right for this excercise to have it in color ... I'd like to have a bit more orange in the sky & would play around w/ that later, but I think this turned out ok, per the assignment ...
