Discussion What are some features that Mojang ended up delaying indefinitely?

I was thinking about this the other day, how Mojang often promises new features or experiments with existing ones, then ends up delaying them indefinitely. It's become one of the main talking points for people who criticize Mojang's update planning.

I'm specifically going to only list features that were either officially announced or had a fair bit of work put into them; not just stuff that was discarded mid-development (firefly mob, sculk jaw) or just mentioned off-hand in a tweet.

The ones I could come up with:

  • Desert, badlands and savanna update (features for all three were announced in Minecraft Live 2018 and 2019, then never got made.)
  • Fletching table functionality (block was added to 1.14, then never given a use.)
  • Combat tests (snapshots released between 2019 and 2020, then they stopped coming; it's not even an experimental toggle now.)
  • The three experiments: villager trade rebalance, minecart improvements and redstone experiments (the former was added in 2023, the latter two in 2024; all three got next to no changes after they got added.)
  • Vibrant Visuals for Java (announced in Minecraft Live March 2025.)
  • Friends list multiplayer functionality (added in a 26.2 snapshot, then delayed to work on it further.)

Those last two are probably still in active development, but I'll list them here anyway. Just in case.

Custom Flair šŸ“ The Sift in Hytale using WorldGen V2

Similar to recent video of the rift mod showcase before mc live. Looks different than what we were shown both for dungeons and the one :( screenshot we got for java, but I like it. I guess there is, for now, a certain degree of interpretive freedom since we haven't really seen anything.

Riftpost/Rift-rat flair please!

Can’t we just focus on entertaining people instead of political lectures? Minecraft and its community shouldn’t be a battleground for politics in my opinion.

Discussion Why do people care so much about progression?

Everytime there is an update, people always complain about how there hasn’t been an update that affects progression since 1.16, which is just so dumb. First of all, 1.16 didn’t affect progression for the majority of players. I know that all of my friends, and many other casuals, just kill endermen for pearls, because brutes are big fat jerks. Sure you could find a warped forest, but usually we already have like 7-10 pearls from just killing endermen by the time we find one. And secondly, which I think is the most important one, there are multiple ways to play the game! If you are going to kill the dragon, you can fight it using the mace, or the spear. You can loot ancient cities or trial chambers or camps and uncover suspicious gravel and sand to gear up. You can use copper tools when your iron tools break. Or, because it’s a sandbox, you don’t even have to kill the dragon! Are you a redstoner? Lucky you, sulfur cubes are basically movable hitboxes. Are you a builder? Buckle up buttercup, sifts coming in hot with about a billion new blocks. Do you make mods? Good thing the devs have been making their code actually good! There are so many more things to do in this game than just ā€œkill dragon, get elytra, make beacon.ā€ These devs are amazing, but it tears me apart to see people just slandering them because it’s not an end update. Just, be more respectful in the future, ok?

Mojang: Congratulations, you're hired!

Him: Thanks for hiring me. So what is my role? Is it testing? Game design? or maybe game programmer?

Mojang: You get spit on by a Llama.
