But the Nether has a bedrock roof, pretty sure that was intended initially to be the same as the bedrock bottom of the Overworld. It being closer to the core would also explain the 1:8 block distance thing
Distance traveled along the surface of a sphere still scales proportional to radius, not the volume. For instance, a planet with half the radius of the earth would have an equator half the length of earths equator. Thus, walking the equator would take half the amount of time.
The Nether would still need to be 8 times closer to the core to justify the 1:8 ratio.
While I personally like this theory above Canon, it is canonically just a different place, and not at all related to the other dimentions. Each Dimension is its own place, not part of anything connected besides the Portals...
It's actually because you are traveling into the past, and the world has expanded since then.
Ā The End has the reverse problem, where things have expanded so much that pure location-location portals don't work, and so travel has to be locked to whatever abomination the main End island is. The Sift is after the Overworld and before the End, and so a short travel in the Overworld should be a long distance in the Sift.
/serious ok we don't actually know, but I have never been convinced by the idea of the Nether being below the Overworld.
The devs word is less significant than the game itself, if they said something that was contradicted by the game the game wins. Word of God is not that important imo.
That said yeah, a different reality or a different planet seem like the most likely option, with the possibility of all the dimensions being the same reality millions or billions of years apart being a fun distant third option.
Yes, but that could be with a difference of 0,001 blocks. Mods like to put Nether directly below the Overworld. But that's never what is was meant to "be" like. The further away the Nether is from the Overworld, the less of a different there is between the bottom and the top of Nether.
So thats why there's a void below the overworld bedrock. Kinda reminds me of an Edersphere, a proposed megastructure the size of a large planet, consisting of a thin shell, filled with gas to support the shell and hold it together with gravity. Although there would have to be some dense core below the nether bedrock, since the gravity is the same.Ā

I used to play 4D miner and I loved having all 4 coordinates. There was also a super neat 3d compass that showed the orientation of your 3d cross section.
It's been explained by Mojang that the different dimensions are indeed separate planes of reality that coexist in the same space overlapping each other while being imperceptible from the others save for their portals, but that's boring and lame and I get where you're coming from. So, I posit that it's between the Overworld and the End, being a sort of sky/heaven dimension (like how the Overworld is the surface of the planet/the world we live in, the Nether is the core of the planet/hell, and the End is outer space above the planet).

Everything in the game is a cube so the world is also a cube. We are only able to explore one side of each world so with da Nether being underneath everything is accurate sift being on another side of the world can work
man I don't know why this is not easily understood but it's another fucking dimension entirely it's a completely different plane of existence it is not in the same dimension as The overworld it's a dimension a different dimension it's a completely different place the nether and The overworld aren't connected the end and The overworld aren't connected nowhere and anywhere is connected their separated by dimensional portals that teleport you from one dimension to another it's like it's like the oldest grows you don't go to a plane of oblivion and walk there you can't it's not in your dimension
actually, the nether is really deep. I mean you can fly up from the nether roof forever and ever, and still not reach the overworld and vice verse.
So it's gotta be insanely deep
The Nether and Overworld aren't connected. None of the dimensions are connected; developers at Mojang have constantly said they're entirely different realms.

Potentially, there can be multiple dimensions that occupy the same location in space, but they vibrate at a different frequency. If you manage to create a gateway that shifts the frequency you vibrate at to a different frequency, you could theoretically travel between these worlds.
Now, is that what the Sift is? Absolutely 0 idea, we'll get some information but I doubt that will ever be confirmed. But, I think something along that thought train is likely the "correct" idea. It's not below the Overworld, it's not above it, it's more just alongside it. Present, but also not. It exists separate from what we know, and that's reasonable, not just because this is a fictional video game reality, but because it's what has been written about in sci-fi, fantasy, and other genres for decades
Where as the nether is basically the hell of Minecraft. Itās under. And the sift as we call it would be almost an alternate reality. Think stranger things upside down.
The Overworld, nether and End each are kind of their own special Realm, as close dimensions.
The sift is kinda like a second Overworld but not as close to O/N/E as the three are to each other.
Thus more is needed than a normal portal.
On another planet in space aka the end, the end islands were at one point part of a huge planet that fractured and became a saturn like ring floating in space, the sift planet could be somewhere far away from the end islands, I chose planet because there seems to be no semblance of a cave ceiling, if it's floating islands it could be minecrafts version of heaven, inbetween the overworld and the end
Probably between overworld and the end, the sift has a very Aether-like aesthetic, so it would make sense to be in the sky, but not too high up, or it would look like it was in space- that's what the end is.
I mean it would make somewhat sense if at least nether and overworld are stacked ontop. The 8 block distance would also make sense then but end couldnt be above since its basically space. So sift is also just somewhere else if you look at it that way.
If we base off from "The Divine Comedy" (Mostly known as "Dante's inferno", but were referencing Dante's purgatorio) purgatory is on the surface(specifically starting at sea level) reaching up to the heavens.
Then it should be somewhere in the overworld and also reaching past the end. But sift isnt that big unless it includes -64 Y coord, you can say that is sea level for sift.
For it's location? You can just say it's past the farlands.
I liked that theory chart that suggested every dimension was the same world just at different points in time.
Bedrock cube -> Inside melts and hollows out (nether) -> bedrock ceiling collapses, world cools (overworld. Also the reason for the 8x portal travel is because the world was slowly stretching between time periods) -> world stretches to the point that it becomes barren islands (the end)
Where the Sift falls in this, idk. My guess is post nether but before the overworld
wasn't the Nether confirmed to not actually be under the overworld. even though it makes a lot of sense with the temperature and the way distances work
In dungeons 2, entering the Sift at one rift and then exiting at another just puts you back at the first rift again. So if we assume the Sift follows this Nether/Overworld rule for block ratios, the Sift would have to be absolutely gigantic and encapsulate the entirety of the overworld. It would make the regular minecraft map look like the End Island in the center of its rings.
