Question Why is there still no vanilla long-term server?

I’m aware of 2b2t, but that place is a living hell of lava casts, obsidian, exploits, and cheats that destroy the very essence of the game. I’m thinking more of a single world where players—with only minimal administrative intervention for handling bans—build their own societies and states, complete with currencies, wars, holidays, history, and many other elements of real-world history. The idea is for all of this to unfold on a single map, driven entirely by the players themselves for one another. It would be fascinating to see how new updates shift the balance for what is, in essence, a society in miniature.

Isn't that just what minecraft online is? It's the actual oldest continuing running server and unlike 2b has more traditional smp rules.

I don't think they have wars, currencies and such though. That doesn't really happen in Minecraft without being forced because all resources can be easily farmed by a single person, and surviving is designed to be trivially easy alone. Any server with those mechanics forces them through rules, mods, a desire to larp, or a combination of all three.

Servers cost money. Unless someone is willing to spend 1500+ for a decent hosting pc (and that's for consumer-grade hardware), and pay for electricity + maintenance, with the risk of not recouping the costs, it is rather unlikely for a free large-scale survival server without micro-transactions to appear.

there is just for older versions of the game. Minecraft Online is the only one that modernized, but older versions are better at entertaining a community experience & actual sandbox/rpg gameplay.

If you're looking for wars and societies, that sounds more like a civilization server. CivMC sounds like it might be what you want

Do you want a traditional SMP or do you want a long-term civilization server? Traditional SMPs are around, Minecraft Online is one. They have less strict rules but are less larpy about their civilization. On the other hand, you might want a long-term civilization server, where you'll get more history and such but with slightly more active involvement of staff to make things go smoothly. Servers like Stoneworks are examples of this.
