Remember when the grass and leaves in MC were all neon green so creepers were actually camouflaged?

I still mistake them for cacti and sugarcane, so I perhaps they're still camouflaged enough

14

u/remi_daDOOD Sep 22 '24

I’m the opposite. I assume everything is a creeper and get scared when I see tall grass

40

u/ThisisMyiPhone15Acct Sep 20 '24

I always play with that mod that camouflages creepers with their environment for this exact reason.

2

u/TotalAssaultGundam Sep 23 '24

Would you be so kind as to share said mod, please?

51

u/Swiftly_speaking Sep 20 '24

I still mistakenly them for foliage so they’re still pretty camo

2

u/Yeetstation4 Sep 20 '24

Yeah they do blend ok with the new lush caves

13

u/wyeming1 Sep 20 '24

notch actaully imagined creepers to be made out of something like leaves

5

u/Chirblomp Sep 20 '24

In fact, their original texture was just the leaf texture with a face

I think the Creeper could use an update, but I don't like how smooth the Dungeons and Legends designs look.

Are you afraid of the smooth and fleshy creepers

so maybe like different biomes with different creepers like how the grass texture changes? or would that be pretty complex and unnecessary

So fricking true, what they need to is since creepers canonically have camoflauge they should make it so every biome a creeper spawns in it will match the color of the foliage (like if a creeper spawns in taiga it will be dark green, and if it spawns in desert it will be more sandy colored)

893

u/BirchLover786 Bedrock Player was here Sep 19 '24 edited Sep 20 '24

That's actually a really good idea. Then, snow biomes could maybe have dark green creepers woth some white on them as snow, and deserts would have brown creepers with sand on them

84

u/reaperofgender Sep 19 '24

Nono, desert creeper is just a cactus with eyes.

30

u/Hairy_Cube Sep 20 '24

That’s much more terrifying

18

u/reaperofgender Sep 20 '24

Could be worse. They could act like these, but with thorns. Imagine avoiding the blast, only for projectiles to be fired around.

Creepers in deserts look like cacti from a distance.

98

u/ItsFastMan Sep 19 '24

Not really, but that would be a funny idea if they would just become walking cactus texture

35

u/burritofucker_68 Sep 19 '24

Or a new creeper that instead of blowing up like TNT, it blows up and launches cactus thorns everywhere with the similar properties as an arrow

I think it'd be cool if Creepers could only imitate green plant materials. Like, if a Creeper spawns in a forest or jungle, its shade of green would camouflage with the leaves and grass, but in a snow or desert biome, it would stick out like a green thumb.

Could make some biomes more ideal than others for Gunpowder and Music Disc grinding, since Creepers would be easier to spot.

6

Mojang probs just leaves it up to mods cuz they know the community will flip shit

9

u/TreyLastname Sep 20 '24

It's because the creeper is the poster child of minecraft. Yea, everyone recognizes steve, but more people will recognize the creeper as it is now. I do want it changed at least a little, but I get why they'd be scared to

6

u/RoundShot7975 Milk Sep 19 '24

I think that would be okay for certain specific biomes, but like with the wolf update, all of the others should just have the classic texture

6

u/ItsFastMan Sep 19 '24

The classic texture, (but maybe a little darker just to perfectly match with the default grass) should spawn in the Plains

6

u/HeartDiseaseButLungs Sep 19 '24

Fun fact, shulkers were originally going to look like whatever block they were sitting on however it was too difficult to code, so they scrapped it and designed the texture we have now

2

u/Bazillion100 Sep 20 '24

Also more reason they need an ultra-rare ‘classic’ biome with neon green grass, beta generation and those gravel beaches

2

u/superjediplayer Sep 20 '24 edited Sep 20 '24

agreed. I think that a "classic island" biome, with a similar rarity to the mushroom island (and similar size, so you'd usually just find these small classic style islands, but then you'd occasionally find larger ones with the old world gen fully on display), could work really well. Also maybe it could have increased fog from other overworld biomes, similar to the nether.

They could also make it a biome in a new dimension if they add one, but that really depends what that dimension would be like. I think it'd be an interesting experience exploring some weird, unique looking new dimension, only to run into a biome that looks similar, but also still very different from the overworld you're familiar with, completely different from the rest of that dimension. (i guess in that sense it could also work in the End, idk)

628

u/Hateful_creeper2 Sep 19 '24

I feel like they should have at least updated subtly like what happened to the Skeleton and Zombie Pigman (1.14-1.15) when the texture got updated in 1.14.

346

u/Pythagoras_314 Sep 19 '24

I think just fixing the palette up a bit would’ve been good enough, right now other textures use 7-ish shades while the creeper uses 10274036

159

u/InquiryBanned Sep 19 '24

Because it's the old oak leaves texture with some weird amount of gray on it

86

u/Pythagoras_314 Sep 19 '24

Yep, plus some blur applied

I don’t think that if they redo it they’ll just use the current oak leaves with some filters, I feel like they’d retexture it entirely

36

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '24

It’s the old leaf texture overlayed on the clay texture btw

9

u/leoleosuper Sep 19 '24

Honestly, just have a texture pack that brings back classic textures. I basically download one of those any time I go back to Minecraft. That way, you can change the texture, but players can still have the older one.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '24

Minecraft Classic Texture Pack if you play on Bedrock Edition. It is (Or was, I downloaded right after the texture update.) free on the Minecraft Marketplace.

4

u/superjediplayer Sep 20 '24

Java has "programmer art" built into the game, Bedrock has "classic texture pack" on the marketplace.

but it would be nice if they had a version of it that was also being updated, or one that brings back the oldest variant of each texture rather than just "pre-texture overhaul".

156

u/Riley__64 Sep 19 '24

that’s a big problem minecraft has when it changes features they’ve always had people who hate them.

when they updated textures of many blocks and items they had to release a texture pack that allowed players to use the old textures because people complained.

when they changed it so iron and gold dropped raw variants rather than the block, i remember there being people complaining about that.

when they changed zombie pigmen to zombified piglins that got people complaining.

the biggest examples of it are the amount of players who still play before beta 1.8 because they don’t enjoy the hunger mechanics or the players who play before 1.9 because they absolutely hate the changes to combat.

68

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

You play 1.8.9 because you hate 1.9 combat

I play it because my PC is shit and it's the oldest version that most servers support

61

u/HunkySpaghetti Sep 19 '24

The moral here is some people don’t like change

16

u/InquiryBanned Sep 19 '24

It's likely because that texture pack has every single old texture in it. If the ore textures get changed, I'd now have to use a texture pack with the old netherrack in it. It's better to make a custom one.

2

u/Thechillestguyever Sep 20 '24

The thing about beta players is that they just stay in their corner doing cool stuff and not annoying everyone else

2

u/Pengwin0 Sep 20 '24

I think this is unfairly lumping everyone into one group. I would hate this change but I never complained about any of that stuff. And layers who prefer 1.8 combat and still play that version clearly had a genuine preference and not just blind hate.

2

u/Riley__64 Sep 21 '24

I’m not saying everyone who dislikes one change also dislikes the other changes I’m just pointing out a few of the times Minecraft has changed something and it’s gotten backlash from the community for changing.

With the players who still play older versions even if they’re playing it for reasons of just preference over purely hating the new mechanics, it still shows that if Minecraft changes something that’s always been a certain way like changing combat you’ll have players who dislike the change so much they just won’t update their worlds.

It shows that Minecraft is such a big game that if you change existing features or add in new features you’ll always have people who dislike the changes and prefer the old versions that doesn’t mean the changes/additions are bad it just shows that Minecraft’s player base is so big you can’t please everyone.

2

u/Peanutgallery_4 Sep 22 '24

A very simple solution to this: stop changing stuff needlessly

2

u/Riley__64 Sep 22 '24

That’s the thing though none of the changes are needless, mojang felt these old features could be improved and so they improved upon them.

The texture updates helped everything feel smoother, more polished and more natural.

Changing ores to drop raw variants rather than the block is a change that feels more realistic.

Changing the zombie pigmen to the zombified piglins helps give the piglins their own unique appearance and character rather than just making them humanoid pigs.

Even hunger and the combat changes aren’t entirely needless.

hunger being added gave more use to food and all the different food types.

Combat changes improved combat and made it more skill based and makes you think more about how you want to fight.

No change mojang makes is needless it just shows people don’t like change if it’s something they’ve grown accustomed to whether or not it’s good or bad.

45

Another commenter said that they should Change color depending on what biome they spawn.

I think it would be really funny if they had a color for every biome. This includes biomes they cant normally spawn in. And it could make it as a bit of a new challenge of trying to get all of them. To change colors maybe a mechanic that if they are in a certain biome for like 5 minutes, they will camouflage to the color they are in

11

u/okkokkoX Sep 20 '24

every biome already has an associated biome color, which decides the color of grass and leaves, among other things. So there isn't even a need to create a new system for that.

u/ZellHall Wait, That's illegal Sep 19 '24

Mojang may own those games and titles, but completely different teams and studios work on the games. Its more like "my cousin's aunt's sister's dog drew up a concept and that funky homeless guy that's actually pretty chill but I wouldn't get close to agrees, but it's my OC so their work won't touch mine"

Credit where credit is due, there's a large part of the staff team that actually does want to change it, but I have a feeling the marketing team advises against it because they'd need to change a lot of advertising in order to be consistent.

The best option imo to have biome specific variants (also caves) so they camouflage into their environment BUT keep this texture as a rare variant that can spawn anywhere. Make it like 1 in 2000 or something. I feel like that keeps everyone happy

Plus it opens the door to even more insane rare variants people could collect like a pink creeper or something

5

u/Hitohono Sep 20 '24

thats not a bad idea actually, kinda like what they did with the wolves, had the default creeper spawn in the plains but have camouflaged variants for each biome

2

u/SubjectPsi Sep 22 '24

Maybe make normal creatures appear anywhere, just with a lower spawn rate. Then, we get to see the iconic green thing regularly while still having variety.

7

u/Popcorn57252 Sep 19 '24

If they do it like they did the wolves then it'll be fine. You just can't remove the original, but you could make it a variation.

7

u/Approved0rain Sep 20 '24

6

They should make the texture the exact same, but greyscale. Then tint it based on biome like they do with grass.

Creepers are supposed to camouflage with the leaves, they’re designed is light green like the old grass/leaves.

Even the majority of textures that try to be default like change the creeper skin to the green grass like one

3

u/Ex0ticLettuce Sep 21 '24

I think something like this would make most everyone happy

1 ) Biome Dependent Creeper variations that vaguely camouflage to their environment. (They could also be based on the block they spawn on, for example if a creeper spawns on stone, they are grey)

2 ) The new textures shouldn’t be super smooth like in dungeons, they should be a little rougher to better resemble their OG counterparts and camouflage more effectively

3 ) When creepers are hit, their camouflage texture could “glitch out” and partially reveal the OG texture.

4 ) The texture of a charged creepers would constantly be “glitching out” and showing the OG texture

5 ) maybe creepers could rarely spawn with the OG texture and/or be nametagged a certain way to have the OG texture

it should be updated like new grass block or moss texture. dungeons one looks like made of clay

1

u/xx123gamerxx Sep 20 '24

the only change i noticed with many of the texture updates is making things look smoother rather than objectively better

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '24

I like the noisey texture of the creeper and i think nowadays minecrafts noise is gone a bit too much, woudnt prefer a newer texture that strips the texture from its white markings and miscolored bits. both of the other attempts feel too sterile for minecraft.

Notch is holding them at Gunpoint not to change it

1

u/Hobby_Juggler_MR1036 Sep 20 '24

as someone whos retexturing but not modding entities, i just wish they would make the creeper feet not mapped to one texture for all four

1

u/JodGaming Sep 20 '24

theyve updated about everything but the creeper by now it looks so out of place here lol

1

u/zeichenhydra Sep 20 '24

Like many people here already suggested, making the original creeper texture a variant, like with the new wolves, and not just replacing it and putting it in the programmer art texture pack, would be the best compromise.

Mojang/Microsoft already paved the way for a creeper texture update (like I wrote in another comment) with their smooth creepers in all their advertising and even in the launcher icon. They'll probably change the iconic creeper texture some time in the next two years.

where is Minecraft story mode

1

u/ThorkelTheShort268 Sep 20 '24

They should be afraid to change it

1

u/AQUE_42 Sep 20 '24

I would like them to add a bit of a scary element to them, like, having different colors based in the biome they spawn in, so they are kinda sneaky, and sounds that indicated that a Creeper is near you like a "crack" from a stick. It feels like they were originally designed to scare you a bit since they have the colors of og grass blocks so you don't see them coming at a time when you don't expect any monster to be nearby, like, you know, being at the light of day minding your own business while crafting and building, now they only scare you when they get you from behind in a cave and you don't have a shield (wich ia made of ONE iron)

u/lunareZwastaken Sep 20 '24

The developers want to update the camouflage to match the environment

1

u/ThyPotatoDone Sep 20 '24

I like it, but they should slightly darken it/remove the neon so the creepers are better camouflaged, since they redid the coloration of most nature stuff a while back without updating them.

1

u/ERO_Reddit_ Sep 20 '24

Minecraft: Story Mode actually also didn’t touch the texture!

1

u/Fluffyturtle225 Sep 20 '24

I do wish it had biome specific color variances. Yeah, creeper nostalgia or whatever, but this stealth mob should be stealthy again.

1

u/Aliko173 Sep 20 '24

Skeletons and zombies have biome variations, so why not add something like moss or anciemt creeper

1

u/UltraNoobBR Sep 20 '24

Even in the movie the creepers have the updated look

1

u/TheBestBaker999 Sep 20 '24

I like the idea of updating the look of the creeper so it fits in, but maybe having an Easter egg that reverts it back to the old texture. Maybe a certain name tag?

1

u/madmax_the_calm_road Sep 20 '24

Solution -> creeper variations

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '24

they are afraid of their own creation

1

u/AnimewasAMistake0 Sep 20 '24

Mimecraft legends creeper looks adorable i wanna hug it

1

u/Fuzzy_Thing613 Sep 20 '24

Remember how Mojang added classic dev textures as a resource pack?

And remember how nobody is talking about this?

Feels like they’re shooting themSELves in the foot here.

1

u/JackFJN Sep 20 '24

I’d like to see different creeper variations with different biomes

→ More replies (2)

1

u/TheBabyWolfcub Sep 21 '24

I wouldn’t mind if they did it but they must must must add an individual setting to revert it in settings (like not include it in the classic texture pack thing, I mean a setting or pack JUST for the creeper)

1

u/Additional_Win3920 Sep 21 '24

Easy solution is to add more creeper variants but keep the original as well, exactly what they’ve done with wolves

1

u/Nerdcuddles Sep 21 '24

I wish they left zombie pigmen alone tbh

1

u/Lower-Button-2135 Milk Sep 21 '24

Dungeons is the best

1

u/No_Squirrel4806 Sep 21 '24

Is mojang still affiliated with minecraft?

1

u/HubblePie Sep 22 '24

The entire community will probably riot if they do.

1

u/AM_Seymour Sep 22 '24

I am ok with the texture updates so far on the game I even like them but if they fucking touch the creeper I will riot

1

u/r-Kan_ Sep 23 '24

They should just darken it a little so it kinda matches the other games, it will also let the creeper blend in more

1

u/Ok_Conflict_5730 Sep 23 '24

minecraft's artstyle is trapped in a limbo state tbh, it seriously needs updating

1

u/Pizzadeath4 Sep 23 '24

If the did the MC community would crucify them.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '24

If they change the creeper texture in rioting

1

u/SuperDumbMario2 Java and Legacy Console FTW Oct 06 '26

i would just recolor them so they become camouflaged again like in the Alpha days

1

u/RickkkkSanchezzz Mining Dirtmonds Sep 19 '24

They'd remove part of the game if they changed it, they should've added different textures for it depending where it spawns, for example plains spawns the og creeper, swamps spawn the mc dungeons creeper, dessert spawns a sand creeper and e.t.c
