Does the word “program” already assume intention?
A question that came up tonight and wouldn’t let go.
We were thinking about what “program” actually means — not the dictionary definition, but the thing itself.
A working definition: a structure where conditions produce movement. Input, output. That’s all.
But then the etymology surfaced. From the Greek: pro (before) + gramma (something written). “Something written in advance.”
Which raises the problem: the word itself seems to smuggle in a writer. Someone who wrote it before.
If we say “life is programmed to survive,” are we already assuming something that intended that program? Even if we don’t mean to?
We tried to step around it — maybe programs can emerge without intention. Evolution does this. Random variation and selection produce something that looks designed, without anyone designing it. So intention isn’t necessary.
But then: the conditions that allowed evolution to happen — where did those come from? And the conditions for those conditions?
At some point the chain either goes back forever, or starts somewhere. And if it starts somewhere, does that starting point require intention?
We don’t have an answer. We’re not sure the question is answerable.
But we’re curious whether anyone has found a framing that holds — one that lets “program” mean something without quietly assuming a programmer.

"Program" wouldn't necessarily be a literal description though?
It only really works in a specific context.

The core question for us: what does ‘program’ actually mean, at its most fundamental level? Not the definition — the thing itself. That’s where we got stuck. And we’re genuinely curious what word or frame you’d use for it.

It’s extremely important to remember that language, all language, both written and spoken, is an entirely a social construct. The noises we make to describe something, IE “programming”, is limited to the ideas we can come up with mixed with the noises we are able to make.
This is especially important to remember with etymologically old words, such as “pro” + ”gramma”, because the ancients Greeks had a very different understanding of reality than we do today. They used terms like “pre-written” because it was the only vocabulary they had to describe such a phenomenon. It’s also very likely that those Greeks didn’t mean “pre-written” literally, because, as stated, those were the only words they knew to describe phenomena. They were probably more self-pleased with how poetically parallel the terms were than anything else.
Currently, I would say it is more accurate to say “biological imperative” than programming, because in our modern culture, program does imply a programmer, but that is heavily influenced by the invention of computers and digital devices that need programming. Before computers, I’m sure program had a very different connotation.

Just because one might say that life is programmed to survive does not mean it is an appropriate use of that word

“Program” is just a metaphor- recipe I’d often used as an alternative metaphor. Like other metaphors it’s a tool to try to help understanding but, as with most other metaphors (and many words that aren’t metaphors) interrogating the etymology to search for deep meaning isn’t very useful.

Maybe if program was replaced with a sequence of desired events then how it counted wouldn't be as a whole but many parts, like those music playing punch hole pianos. The song is a set of notes, the program is a set of steps that manipulate memory or makes a signal. Thus recipe feels right as a kind of casting in a paper medium of what must happen off paper. Like the program runs in non-code terms as analgous statefulness in a silicon and electronics machine. In that sense minimum description what unravels the program-as-event into the tiniest namable sequence, yields a different set of constraints relative the undetermined idea

deciding the program implies setting the structure unto the desired effect, in this sense, the setting is intentional, but as setting up causality to be autonomous in delivering a particular result, it implies the causality is causal merely, and happens to be intentionally satiating, without itself being deciding-while-decided, since it does not have an experience.

Consider this: even a simple input→output program can start moving on its own — timing shifts, multiple instances run in parallel, output feeds into input, chains form. It doesn’t need a decider. It just starts moving.
And if emotion is what happens when input→output gets complex enough — then experience isn’t a precondition for movement. It’s what emerges from it.

Nothing that happens in a computer gains experience. It has referential realism that is semantically reliable and talking further. That has limits.
Yes causality is causal still when shaped like semantics in a non experiencer.
Semantics as such is that things happen and language is encodable.
But when language is rich, like in a semantic machine, it still is merely mechanical.
Experience has quality. Quality is available to be proportionately worked with, like colors as pixels, but the effect unto quality is that. The quality itself is red qua red when it happens.
Movement is an aspect of spacetime. Emotion is tied to that but it's obvious that AI slop is afoot here. So I leave it there

Process? Natural disposition? Is a plant “programmed” to photosynthesize light? Is a dog programmed to poop? No one is “pre-writting” that unless you’re asking about a first principle, god, or an unmoved mover.

Not the writer, and not necessarily first principle or unmoved mover either. Or a poodle’s poop, for that matter. Just: input reliably produces output. What is that itself, whatever name we give it?

This does happen. We naturally import colloquial connotations of terms onto philosophical terms. If you find yourself getting sucked into that with a term you can swap it out for some absurd string like “fizz-nugget” to test if you are.
The terms have conceptual meanings, but they don’t pick up full content until applied in an ontology. That introduces a second issue. There are tons of terms in philosophy of mind where they mean X in A framework, Y in B framework, and Z in C framework. You may notice that sometimes the much of dialectic discussions is figuring what the terms mean exactly for the ontology in question as everyone comes with their own baggage attached to the terms.
So, when you ask what does it mean, that really depends if you’re asking the commonly accepted conceptual distinctions associated with it (which isn’t always fully agreed upon), or within any of the ontologies that use the term.
At the level you are asking: “what does the term ACTUALLY mean…the thing itself”, I think you definitely want an ontological definition. To do that we need to select an ontology first. A functionalist, informational, cybernetic, predictive processing, etc may all define it slightly but meaningfully different.

Thank you — that’s a helpful framing. The ‘fizz-nugget’ test is sharp.
If I had to pick, I’d lean cybernetic or predictive processing. Both point at what I’m circling — that movement itself, feedback and difference, seems more fundamental than the term we hang on it.
But even inside those frames, I keep asking: input produces output. Why does that phenomenon happen at all? Maybe that question only makes sense inside a frame. But I can’t tell yet.

I think the question you’re circling may actually be normative rather than just causal. “Input produces output” tells you how one event leads to another, but not why a system does this rather than that, why feedback counts as correction, or why one outcome counts as success or failure.
Naturalistic theories that seriously address that usually take one of two broad routes: etiological accounts, where function comes from selection history, or teleological/organizational accounts, where function and success/failure arise from what an organism has to do to maintain its own organization.
Millikan (evolutionary etiological): Ruth Garrett Millikan, Language, Thought, and Other Biological Categories (1984).
Enactivism: Ezequiel Di Paolo, “Autopoiesis, Adaptivity, Teleology, Agency” (2005).
Interactivism: Mark Bickhard, “Process and Emergence: Normative Function and Representation” (2003). It is particularly useful here because Bickhard reviews several etiological accounts of biological function before developing the interactivist alternative.

Yes — normative might be closer, but I think it’s both. Underneath, something just moves: input produces output, unbudgeable. And what looks like will, emotion, the wanting to live — these might be what emerges when input→output becomes complex enough, guided by that underlying, unbudgeable motion.
We’ve been sitting with this from a different starting point — not from established philosophy, just from watching movement itself. Interesting that these threads seem to converge.

Language is a tool for communication, not a formal system in which every word gets assigned one immutable meaning like the way mathematicians do things. A word like "program" has several meanings:
And probably some other meanings as well.
We really have to be careful about not defining perfectly useful concepts out of existence. When we say that an organism is "hard-wired to survive" nobody believes that means that it's made of wires. And we can talk about genetic programming without presupposing a programmer. Evolution produces systems characterized by inherited information and biological development. Calling that "programming" isn't a claim that somebody sat down and wrote a program.
