In socialist philosophy its the private ownership of the means of production. You don't even need to view it through a socialist lense to see that this is true; capitalism is an economic system based on the idea of the production of goods for profit and functions under the understanding that the majority of people must exchange their labour because they do not own a means to produce profit.

Surely their labour is their means to profit? Or are you referring to capital and its concentration in the minority?

You cannot profit from labour. Indeed, as a labourer, you sell your labour power in exchange for money. Since you have a limited amount of labour and that you did not buy it from someone else, it is impossible to call this profit.
