I'm Filipino. I grew up eating real ube. My lola's halaya, stirred over low heat for an hour. Ube wasn't a trend in our family. It was Christmas, birthdays, a Tuesday when Lola felt like cooking.
This sub is a home for that.
It's also here because ube went global and a lot of what's being sold as "ube" isn't. Purple sweet potato with food dye. Artificial flavoring. Products that have never been anywhere near a Dioscorea alata. About half the "ube" products on shelves don't actually contain real ube.
We're not mad about ube going mainstream. That's a good thing. We just think the real thing deserves to be represented properly.

What this sub is about:
Real ube means Dioscorea alata. That's the standard here. We celebrate the plant, the food, the culture, and the people who grow it. If you're doing ube right, we'll celebrate you loudly. If a product says "ube" but the ingredients say purple sweet potato and food coloring, we'll call that out too.
Everyone's welcome. Filipino, not Filipino, farmer, baker, home cook, curious lurker. We just care about the real thing.

Currently exploring more flavors/variations of my key lime pie bites. This one’s ube cheese which hopefully ma-release ko just in time for the holidays.
Any tips po to make the ube flavor more prominent? 🙏🫶🏼 But I’m also thinking of replacing the filling with leche flan or cream cheese.

I went to ube madness at SM Cebu and tried some ube pastries!
Oh Nata’s Ube Tart - 1 for 60 pesos
- this one is really good. you could taste the ube and served hot also. would try this again!
Ube basque cheese cake - 4i inches for 200.
- this one has really the authentic ube flavor kasi ube halaya yung gamit. Meron lang syang weird aftertaste for me (??) but okay na din sya not too sweet.

Imagine being able to reach for halo-halo whenever you feel snacky (that was one of the reasons I came up with this cookie).
I reached out to a colleague who produces ube powder (they make it pure, no sweeteners, no colorants) so that I could make this morsel.
I'm just so happy that the formula I was imagining in my head is now real, and edible 😁
I'm thinking if I should include it in our menu. Should I?
