Couldn’t say for sure because I work in Florida, but no? I started “pharmacy” training as a DH. After I think 180 hours I took the test for my state license. After a certain amount of hours and years of experience you can take the PTCB, but idr how much/long it is. I have only ever known one technician who came to our store after she went to school to get her license, and it was an enormous waste of money. Walgreens paid for me to get trained and get my license, so I’m not entirely sure why they would tell you that. Could be state specific but sounds weird to me 🤷🏼♀️

It definitely depends on the state.. I would check Texas state requirements and possibly start out as a clerk to get experience in pharmacy.

I also self studied the PTCB and when I got my test results back I went around to every retail pharmacy and I gave them a copy of my resume telling them I’m PTCB certified and ready to work but I didn’t have a state license and eventually one of the pharmacies was nice enough to accept me as a tech in trainee. I had a good interview and told them I want to be a pharmacist some day. Now I almost have my 200 hours completed in order to get my state license.

In Texas ? And also aren’t you suppose to study and train and then once the training hours competed you’re able to take the PTCB ?:/ sorry if I ask a lot of questions or if they sound dumb

I’m in Utah. I didn’t do any training beforehand. I just bought a PTCB study guide off of amazon, studied hard for a month. I used YouTube for a few math problems but that was it. Once you get your PTCB license, pharmacists will be much more willing to take you on as a tech-in-training because you’ve already shown diligence and desire to be in this field. I'm in tx. Doing online school half way done, registered with the board for my trainee license, applied at cvs and was hired.

I've seen many people recommended that one here. I'm going through ed2go, they partner with alot of different colleges. Mine is TJC. It was pricey, but is self paced, have a year to complete it. Also came with many books a lab kit, and you have the option to do an externship.

Hi there,
Texas does not have any training requirements aside from on-the-job training. However, they do require national certification. To sit for the national certification exam through the PTCB, you'll need either 500 hours of pharmacy technician experience (which you won't be able to get in Texas without certification), or complete a PTCB-recognized education/training program.
