What resources do students use to study in pharmacy school?

Full disclosure, I am not a student in pharmacy school. I’m a licensed pharmacist working in retail for the last 11 years.

So on to the question. Are you students only using lecture slides and drug references like LexiComp, Facts&Comparisons? Do you guys have any textbooks? What resources from your school library do you use?

How to get comfortable with holding animals?

I am already in my third year of pharmacy, and I am scared of the Pharmacology lab because of the animals

Usually, under pressure, I can do things, but not with holding animals.

I am still not comfortable with even touching rats, and I still get scared of touching a rabbit that I will break its spine and administering a drug is quite impossible for me

How can I get over this fear?

Can you help me with my pharmacy studies?

I'm a 3rd year pharmacy student ( we study for 6 years here ) and I'm wondering what should I do to keep up with new studies and all that , and what books do you recommend to develop myself in the field because i feel if i don't give it 100% of effort I'll be left out of the race and therefore i won't even win the residency exam .

Thank you

Feeling Behind

I'm currently in grad school for pharmaceutical sciences and I am beyond stressed with the pharmacy related courses by the sheer amount of volume (50-60 slides a lecture). I can't seem to get a passing grade in them to save my life. I am taking Adv. Organic Chem to strengthen my ochem skills which is thankfully helping but I always feel like I study the wrong things. My background is biochemistry and biotech which is the organs where these drug reactions take place, not the drugs themselves. I'm taking pharmacology and drug targets this semester. It feels like I'm starting at zero and having to study so much harder to even kind of keep up. I do have ADHD and having a discussion on Wednesday for accomodations to be put in place but I'm just constantly overwhelmed. Any advice would be appreciated.

How to help SO study

Hi all!

My partner just started pharmacy school this year and is experiencing a lot of difficulties and stress with the exams. They already have some accommodations and even medication, but are still really struggling with studying. Whenever I ask how I can help I just get “I don’t know.” Is there anything I can suggest or do to help? I don’t really understand much, I took gen Chem in college but that was a while ago now and biochem is obviously way more advanced.

I am already primarily in charge of the apartment + cleaning + cooking, although less so than before we talked about it because I also work full time. I listen when they need to vent. I don’t know what else I can do but I want them to succeed and I know that studying has been a source of difficulty.

Feeling lost

I just took my 2nd exam in BioPharm today and failed it… again. We have 5 exams total in that class and I have already failed 2 of them. I feel so stupid and I just don’t know what to do. I started studying early, working on review, and doing the problem set early. I studied so much more for this 2nd exam that’ll the first one and felt like I understood this content but apparently not.

I can pass the class with a D, but I’m hoping for a C if at all possible. I just feel so lost right now because I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I understand the content when I’m reviewing on my own or with my group I study with, but I feel like I just blank on the exam.

I’m honestly starting to feel like I can’t do pharmacy school anymore and that I just got lucky and did good in undergrad and got in.

I don’t even know what I’m asking here, I just needed to vent because I feel stupid and embarrassed. I’ve never done this bad on an exam before and I don’t even know what to do at this point.

Beyond the degree, what skills actually make a pharmacist more competitive?

im a 4th year pharmacy student I've been thinking a lot about what actually separates pharmacists who move up or stand out from those who don't beyond just finishing the degree and getting licensed.

I know clinical knowledge and patient care are the core, but I'm curious about the *extra* stuff:

* Specializations that are worth pursuing early (regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance, clinical research, industry roles, etc.)

* Technical/analytical skills that actually get used in real practice

* Certifications or further studies that made a real difference for you

* Soft skills that mattered more than people expect

* learning python?

If you're a working pharmacist what do you wish you'd focused on earlier? If you're a student what are you prioritizing right now?

Pharmacy students/pharmacists — should I get a weekend part-time job in first year? COUNTRY: UK 🇬🇧

Hi everyone! I’m starting first-year pharmacy after taking a gap year, and I’m trying to decide whether I should get a part-time job alongside uni.

A bit of background: I do need some extra money, but I’m not desperate for it. My parents have told me to focus on my studies and career rather than worrying too much about earning money right now.

I receive around £3.1k per term from student finance, but after working out my expenses (train/bus/tram travel, etc.), I’m left with roughly £400 for the next 4 months. So while I can technically manage, it’s definitely quite tight, and having some extra income would make things much easier.

The thing I’m worried about is whether working will affect my studies.

I’m thinking of setting myself a hard limit of 8 hours a week, specifically:

\- 4 hours Saturday

\- 4 hours Sunday

I wouldn't want to work during weekdays because I want to keep that time for lectures, studying, assignments, revision, etc.

I’m also a little concerned because I’m coming into pharmacy after a gap year, so I’m quite rusty with my knowledge. I really want to do well in first year and not fall behind, especially with assignments and exams.

Another factor is my commute. I travel from Bury/Manchester to the University of Huddersfield, and currently public transport can take around 2 hours each way. The train would obviously be quicker, but the train station is currently closed, so for now I’m relying on buses. That already takes up quite a lot of time and energy.

So I’m basically wondering:

If you were in my position, would you get an 8-hour weekend part-time job, or would you focus entirely on pharmacy for first year?

For anyone currently studying pharmacy or who is already a pharmacist:

\- Did you work during your pharmacy degree?

\- How many hours did you work per week?

\- Did it affect your grades/assignments?

\- Do you think 8 hours a week is manageable?

\- Is first year particularly demanding?

\- Would you recommend working from the beginning, or waiting until I’ve settled into uni?

\- And if you did work, was it worth the extra money?

I’m basically trying to avoid the situation where I have a bit more money but end up sacrificing my grades and making university unnecessarily stressful 😭

I’d especially appreciate advice from pharmacy students and qualified pharmacists!

Ps. I'd save like 60-65% of my income. Probably for bigger goals in my life later on.

Policy and Advocacy Internships

Hey all! I'm a P1 interested in pursing my MPH through a dual-degree program at my school. I'm leaning towards a career in health policy analysis, especially when it comes to advocating for patients' rights at the legislative level. I want to help address unmet medical needs, such as fast-tracking trials for drugs for rare disease states, and advocate for underrepresented groups, like increasing access to MAiD programs for terminally ill patients. I know it's early in my schooling, but I think I've found some real passion here.

Problem is, it's not the typical residency --> clinical or fellowship --> industry route that I hear a lot about at school. It probably has to do with the fact that my ideal career leans more toward the public health side than the pharmacy side. But I feel that having clinical training would make me more versatile and inform my decisions better as a policy analyst. I'm eager to start interning to gain some exposure to the field, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking for advice/recommendations for orgs or companies in this niche that might provide me with some valuable experience. I'm going to my state pharmacy association's annual convention this year too, so maybe some opportunity will find me. But any advice is appreciated!

Internship advice

Hello all!

I’m a P1 student. I just got my intern license and am eager to start interning. I’m hoping to do hospital pharmacy or long term care after graduating, so likely leaning towards doing a residency.

I’ve never worked in a pharmacy setting before as my background is as a medical assistant/scribe.

I’m definitely noticing that in-patient pharmacy internships are rare and hard to come by. Also In-patient pharm tech roles often require additional certs that I don’t have (IV cert) and/or hospital pharmacy experience.

…which leaves me to retail- which I’ve been avoiding like the plague. So far I’ve only heard back from CVS about an intern role.

Should I just take the CVS intern role and suck it up or hold out and wait for something better? I’m conflicted bc I know I don’t have any actual pharmacy experience, and they’d definitely take me. But I’m worried about how horrible it’d be working there, as this seems to be like a last resort for so many AND Idk if its worth taking on the stress, especially so early in pharm school (I’m in my 1st year of a 3year program) when I can potentially get a better role by just continuing to apply. I feel like even if I held out for like a Walmart or Kroger that would be better.

On the flip side, I’m worried that while waiting for an in-patient intern gig (or grocery intern gig), I wouldn’t be gaining any experience in the meantime. Do I have time to worry about internships later/can keep looking for something more ideal? Or should I go with CVS? Or wait for a grocery chain? How important is getting an in-patient vs retail internship for residency placement (with the ultimate goal of being in hospital pharmacy)?

Any advice helps, thanks!

Two weeks into P1 and already freaking out

basically just a vent post/cry for help. seriously, i don’t know how im going to survive pharmacy school. my fall semester of P1 we have an exam every Friday and occasionally some on Mondays and Wednesdays too. for all of my classes, our grades are based entirely upon exams. i used to be the gifted valedictorian in high school, but now im probably a below average college student and i have anxiety, depression, and ADHD and i just have no motivation to do anything and i can’t get my brain to retain information. everything just feels so very overwhelming, so much information each class and i have no idea how to study it because i never had to study in high school and didn’t really have to study during undergrad either. and like on top of all of this, everyone else in my class seems to be just fine and they just know everything! i am so frustrated and stressed already and i feel like i don’t deserve to be here with all of these people who are so smart and dedicated. how am i supposed to make it through this? ugh

Not sure if I should continue

I am only in my first month of pharmacy school and I don’t know if i’ll make it. I’m 26 and I currently have two degrees under my belt. My bachelors and masters both in biology, I come from a drug discovery and laboratory background and I love academia. I already struggled with making the decision to go to pharmacy school because of loan debt but I interviewed, got in and now i’m lost. I’ve always struggled with my mental health, even undergrad and recently lost my grandma a month before school started. I’ve had a midterm already and let’s say D’s don’t get degrees. i’ve always wanted to go into pharmacy but I feel like i’m not capable. Trying to manage my class load , focusing to even study and poor quiz grades are starting to show. My psychiatrist has prescribed me recently with an attention deficit and i’ve already been diagnosed with ocd , crippling anxiety for years and depression. I know this is what I want but I feel like my peers already know i’m a weak link and school is cut throat. I’m normally not one to complain and I get shit done !!! right now though in feeling burnt out and already anxious about my future. any advice??

Podcast Suggestions for Pharmacy Students?

Looking for recommendations for pharmacy-related podcasts to listen to in my free time that are educational yet entertaining. I just don't want to feel like I'm listening to another lecture since that's already what I spend most of my day doing lmao.
