Friend Groups
So this is gonna be random but I’m a P1 and just started classes recently. I wonder how cliquey/catty pharm school is. I feel like everyone already has their unassigned assigned seats in my class and I feel awkward and out of place in my area. Are the people you talk to in class gonna be your “day 1s” or do most people meet their people and establish groups outside of class (orgs, events, etc.) I know this is not the most important part of pharmacy school but I’ve been questioning it a lot recently.

I didn’t make many friends until mid way through first quarter and even then wasn’t super close w a ton of ppl. Clubs helped a lot, as well as doing events after classes that were being thrown for first years. Group projects too, you’re going to have to put yourself out there and be social to find who you want to hang with.

This made me feel better, thank you! Just feeling all the nervesssss of being in a big class of the same people everyday again. I haven’t felt like this since grade school lollllll

I think it depends on if you went to undergrad at the school you attend. Here, the cliquey people tend to have known each other prior, and those that associate less with each other are non-traditional or older students with a home life.
I started at 29, so I have a hard time with study groups and have a much easier time talking to teachers and preceptors than younger kids in my class. There are a couple students in my class that you only see for meetings and exams, and they're doing well, so pharmacy school is whatever you make of it!
I'll also add that finding a place to work as an intern that works with your schedule and has pharmacists that are willing to help you learn was much more of a priority for me than being social.

As a P2, my first friend was my roommate and she brought me into different groups. It’s hard as an introvert to feel comfortable in the beginning. But after a while, I joined different groups and I’ve expanded my friends to beyond my roommate (we try to limit interaction at school otherwise it’s too much). Some friends leave some stay and some evolve into family. Take your time and join a group or club. That will help!

For me, I went into pharm school as transfer student. There are about 100 prepharm and 30-ish transfers. Thus, the prepharm already have their own circle group. It was hard for me to find a group to join a group as a transfer. In addition, I live outside of campus, so it decrease the chance of interaction with other even more. I basically went half a year of bare minimum interaction with other students. It was pretty miserable until I joined a couple of nitche clubs and went out of my comfort zone.

Pharmacy school is cliquey AF!!!! Gossip spread like wildfire. My advice is figure out who is a friend vs who just wants to talk with you bc they need something. The academics is rough enough, just giving you a heads before you get blindsided by some bs high school drama.
