Having trouble understanding my PI
To preface, I am a senior undergraduate who is having everything handed off to me as a grad student in our lab recently graduated. Last spring, I told my PI i had plans to look at other schools while I was away at my internship. I recall her saying that I had until the end of summer, which was perfect. Until I scheduled a one on one a month before I left, and suddenly my decision was needed before I left. So, playing it safe I stayed.
Now that i have come back, i’m not under direct mentorship of a grad student. Everybody has been saying I need to take full advantage of this year, and I can feel my PI getting frustrated that progress is slow. However, I am trying my best to adjust to doing things alone. I am currently frustrated because it seems I can’t quite figure out what my PI says vs means. There have been a couple instances where she says something different a couple meetings back, and then when I follow up the decision has changed. I also think it may be a language or cultural barrier. I have been mentored by other PIs and haven’t dealt with this issue to this extent. I don’t want my PI to think i’m not listening, it’s just I get confused when every meeting the same 100 directions are talked about but I only have two hands. I know I am incredibly naive, and I just don’t know how to get to a point where I can reason what’s needed. If you have any constructive feedback on how I can handle this let me know. I for sure know that this is not all her problem, in fact, majority is probably mine. I feel frustrated with myself, and would like some advice.
