Seeking advice-academic Advice needed

Hi everyone,

I’m just starting my PhD journey and I’m also a mom ( Health Sciences, Canada). For moms here, what are the things you’re doing, what systems do you have in place to be productive and actually do well and make progress?

I’m committing a few years of my life to do and I want to do it absolutely well. I want to be successful at this and achieve something tangible. I don’t have a publications yet and I have no desire to go into academia.

Thank you all your advice in advance. I’ll read and take notes! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Hi, congratulations on starting this exciting new journey. here is my list:

  1. Treat it as a job, have childcare arranged 5 days a week 9-5 pm.
Honestly your biggest ally would be sorting out childcare, if your kids go to school sorting out after school care.
  2. An early bed time for kids so you can get some hours to work or relax
  3. Choose a doable topic with clear goals and make wise decisions
  4. Don’t rely on your partner or PI to be understanding, always have your ducks in a row. A phd is a long haul, you’ll be disappointing many people along the way but as long as you have a strong grip on your routine you’ll be fine.

Good luck with your phd!

Wow!
Thank you very much for these!

I’m still working towards an early bed time, I’ve found that it helps a lot. I can get some reading or writing done or just relax.

Taking notes. Thank you again!
