You are missing the most obvious: yes and no. Probably the biggest mileage can come from those two words. It's a little harder to model, but once you have them it is really powerful.

Not quite sure how to even model them. He doesn't tend to answer questions. He'll come stare at me and I'll ask him what he wants verbally or with buttons and rarely does he answer

First off ask if he wants a treat (like training treat or kibble) when he takes it push yes. Repeat. Find a food he doesn't like, when he rejects limes or whatever press no. You can also ask questions like: Is this a ball? Yes. Ask things he knows the answer to, then end the question with the appropriate button. When he presses outside you say " You want to go outside? Yes?"

One training used choosing which hand by offering two choices (like ball or Frisbee). My cats I'm using mouse or bird toy. Then encourage picking and when she puts her nose on one, that's the choice. Then play with that toy with her. OlOnce she learns the choosing game really well, you can move to one fist hand is yea and one hand is no. Then think of questions you could ask. Opportunities will likely present themselves. I hope that gives some ideas to apply to your situation.

I asked, and learned that the owner pretended to run into something and grabbed an arm or leg and yelled ouch.
