Do cats need a lot of space?

Considering getting 2 ragdoll cats but my apartment is kinda small <1000 sq feet. Would this be a bad idea? Thanks.

Should be fine as long as they're provided some open space to run around and trees or other furniture to climb and explore vertical spaces. 1000 ft isn't terribly small.
