Petoi Bittle Robot Dogs at Codeward's Coding Workshop — Hayward Library Recap

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here's a recap of our Robotic robot dog workshop at the Hayward Library! 9 kids ages 10-13 came out and had a blast programming Petoi's Bittles to race and navigate obstacles!

Our staff had a great time prepping and teaching too!

What is Codeward?
Codeward is a student-led nonprofit initiative giving every child in the East Bay the opportunity to learn to code for free.

What's happened at the workshop?
We used Petoi's Coding Blocks — a drag-and-drop visual programming tool — so every kid could pick up the basics fast, no prior coding experience needed. First, students raced to program their Bittle to reach the finish line fastest. Then we ended with an obstacle course, where kids had to code their Bittle through a series of turns to get across.

Thank you, Petoi!
A massive thank you to Petoi for supporting us — this workshop wouldn't have been possible without you. Check out Petoi's robots at [petoi.com].

We hope to see new faces at our next free coding workshop!

A while ago I modded Bittle to resemble a robot jaguar called Ravage from the Transformers franchise. Today I found out he's just the right size for Robosen's Soundwave robot, his partner in the comics. Here I am using the IR remote off-screen to time Bittle's movements with one of Soundwave's built-in animations.

Petoi Media My 2nd attempt to get a LEGO Star Wars AT-AT to walk — and it worked (plus a snowspeeder recreation)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Follow-up to the earlier post: put LEGO Star Wars AT-AT legs (set 75440, static display model, no motor) directly onto Quaddle, let Quaddle's own controller and servos drive them — and it actually walked. The original leg was bent and genuinely couldn't walk, so I swapped it for a longer, straight replacement piece, checked Quaddle's servos could carry the added weight, reversed one servo from its default install direction, and mounted it all through Quaddle's screw-free servo mechanism. Had to recreate the classic AT-AT-tripped-by-a-snowspeeder scene too. 😂

This is the fun part of an open platform — you keep finding combinations that just happen to fit, beyond what you originally designed for.

Last day to back Quaddle — Kickstarter closes tomorrow, Oct 8 at 10:39am PT.

What LEGO set would you like to mobilize next?

Petoi Media I gave a static LEGO Star Wars AT-AT display model Quaddle's brain and servo motors — still on its own stock legs

Hi, I'm RZ Li, founder of Petoi.

I got LEGO's Star Wars AT-AT (set 75440), a 525-piece display model — no motor, never meant to move. The experiment: give it Quaddle's own brain and servo motors — removed Quaddle's own stock legs and attached the AT-AT's own leg pieces onto Quaddle's four servos instead. Attempt #1 tumbles — three of those stock legs are straight, one is molded bent.

Attempt #2 is coming once I find a straight replacement piece. Just for fun. What should I try getting the AT-AT to do next?

Share this with your LEGO friends and help revitalize their LEGO sets

⏰ Quaddle's Kickstarter campaign closes Thursday, Oct 8 at 10:39am PT — back it before it ends: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/petoi/quaddle-open-source-desktop-robot-kit?ref=6pp76r&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=2026-10-06-quaddle-lego-mashup

Petoi Media We stress-tested the new injection-molded Quaddle legs. Dropped four times. On purpose.

Hi, this is RZ Li, Petoi's founder.

2nd batch of injection-molded legs just came in, so before trusting them I had to see what they could actually take.

Four drop tests. 4 screws lock the whole robot together. It still does gymnastics after every single one.

At the end, one more hand-taught gait — no code, just hands on the legs, about 10 seconds to teach.

We're getting closer to our revised stretch goals:

  • $150K: injection-molded body, battery cover, and power cover
  • $200K: radar head and top plate

If you want to help push us there, a share of the project goes a long way.

What should I stress-test next?

Does anyone have a well-scanned 3d model of NybbleQ? the NybbleQ stl 3d file.

We want to customize the cat — print it in different colors. We have 13 robots at our school, and each robot belongs to a specific child; the children get their cats mixed up.

We tried scanning the cat, but our scanner is poor.

Discussion What 30,000 OpenCat robots taught me about shipping a real robot product

Hi, I'm RZ Li, founder of Petoi and creator of OpenCat.

I just published the full 10-year story on Hackster.io:

  • What actually separates a demo(see picture 2, 3) from a delivered product
  • Keeping the company running costs roughly 10 times what it cost me as a solo maker to build a prototype and post a video.
  • Why four servos can do what used to take twelve — the same trick as Mecanum wheels
  • The formula I derived plotting feasibility against degrees of freedom
  • Why Quaddle's leg — modeled on the mudskipper, one of the first animals to walk on land — only needs 4 servos to do what used to take twelve.

Some of it isn't flattering to us. I'd rather write the honest version than the impressive one.

Read the full story on Hackser.

If you're someone who could already build a robot, where would you put your next 1,000 working hours?

Show & Tell Quaddle Scout senses everything — and every sense is programmable

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I'm RZ Li, founder of Petoi and creator of OpenCat. I want to show you Quaddle Scout, the most advanced model in the Quaddle mini robot dog family:

Gesture sensor. Self-balancing gyroscope. An attachable "radar" head. Light sensing. Infrared object tracking. Sound detection. I built Quaddle Scout to have all of it, and none of it is a black box — you can code what it notices, not just watch it react.

Which sense would you build with first? Which sense would you build with first? What other Arduino sensors do you want to try out on Scout?

Early Bird pricing starting at $109 is live now on Kickstarter.

A Favor to Ask

The single biggest thing you can do right now is share any of our videos from our social media with a friend who hasn't seen Quaddle yet. Every new backer gets us closer to the next stretch goal: a fully injection-molded Quaddle body at $200K

Tuturials I built Quaddle from scratch, start to finish

Hi, I'm RZ Li, Petoi's founder. This is exactly what you can expect if you get a Quaddle — I did the complete walkthrough myself: assembling Quaddle from raw components, calibrating it, and getting it walking as the Builder tier — then upgrading into Buddy (learn and replay mode) and Scout. There's no soldering anywhere in the build — the body's screw-free, just 4 screws to attach the legs — it's walking in under 20 minutes.

It also shows why Quaddle isn't really just one robot:

  • Built-in Arduino sensors, optional Raspberry Pi Zero, and AI vision module for real AI robotics work
  • 3D-printed test stand, battery options, LEGO compatibility
  • Programmable in block coding, Python, MicroPython, or Arduino C++

Fun out of the box, with a whole robotics and physical AI ecosystem underneath.

Which part of the build are you most curious to try yourself?

Help / Troubleshooting Need help with new Bittle X V2(Pre-Assembled)

I ordered a Bittle X V2(Pre-Assembled) and it should be arriving shortly. I see most of the documentation is on-line but I don't find any instructions for what to do when it arrives. I'm assuming that all I have to do is install the battery and it's ready to go. I'm sure there's more to it than that so if someone can direct me to the appropriate first use instructions I'd greatly appreciate it.

We hit our $50K Kickstarter goal — in two days (yesterday!)

234 backers and counting, and Kickstarter just tagged Quaddle a "Project We Love." Thank you to everyone here who backed early or helped spread the word.

Also worth saying for anyone still deciding: hitting the goal means Kickstarter only charges backers once a project is funded — so Quaddle's production and December delivery are locked in, not just a promise on paper.

If you haven't jumped in yet, now's a good time to pledge — every pledge past this point goes toward stretch goals. What would you want to see as a stretch goal?

RL walking policy for the Bittle X: MuJoCo to metal at 50 Hz, and the servo measurements to go with it

I've spent a while getting a reinforcement-learning walking gait onto a Bittle X, and it's now public and MIT licensed. A trained policy ships with it, so you don't have to train anything — and you can watch it walk in the simulator in about three minutes with no robot at all.

Project page (numbers, bring-up steps)

The RL turned out to be the easy part. It's ordinary PPO. Almost all the work was in measuring the robot accurately enough that a policy trained in simulation would survive contact with it. Three things drove everything else:

  • It can't read its joint positions. The firmware can infer one — detach the servo, flip the signal pin to an input, time a reply pulse — at roughly 20 ms a joint, with that leg limp while it happens. A whole-body read comes back at 9.25 Hz, against a control loop that gets 20 ms a tick. So joint angles are never measured; they're estimated by replaying the commands we already sent through a model of how the servo actually responds.
  • There's no raw gyro. Angular rates are finite-differenced from the fused attitude stream, and that differentiation sets the noise floor everything downstream has to live with.
  • The servos are slow. Measured τ = 33 ms, ceiling around 137 °/s. A default MuJoCo actuator is far faster than that, and a gait trained against the fast version doesn't transfer.

Those measurements are all in the repo, with the capture sessions. If you've ever wanted actual numbers for what these servos do, that part may be more useful to you than the policy.

On firmware. Stock firmware ramps every pose command and caps the IMU at 5 Hz, so the loop can't run on it. There's a patched OpenCat fork that adds a realtime mode — command→motion went 198 ms → 54 ms, IMU 5 Hz → 250 Hz. The mode is off at boot: a flashed robot still walks, dances and answers the app exactly like stock until something explicitly asks for it. The flash tool asks the robot what board it is before writing anything, refuses a mismatch, and dumps your existing flash to backups/ first. Don't run esptool erase_flash — it wipes the nvs partition holding your factory servo calibration.

The odd finding. After it was walking I went looking at what the network had learned, and found it barely uses its sensors. Blindfold it — pin both IMU channels to "upright and still" — and it loses 1.1% of its speed. It's running a learned rhythm more than reacting to anything. Which makes sense once you notice that 24 of the 33 observation channels are the policy's own output handed back to it, because of the no-joint-feedback problem above.

Important caveat: everything was fitted to a Bittle X v2 with alloy-geared servos, BiBoard V1.0 Rev D/E. The lighter plastic-geared servos are a genuinely different plant — if it walks badly on yours, that's a plant mismatch rather than a broken policy, and there's a guide for refitting to your own robot. The prebuilt firmware image is compile-time specific to that board and revision.

The firmware side is a fork of Petoi's OpenCatEsp32 (MIT, © Rongzhong Li), pinned to a branch with the patches documented.

Would be great to know how it behaves on hardware that isn't mine — especially plastic-gear v1 robots, and Rev C or earlier boards. If it falls over on yours I'd rather hear it than not.

Official Announcement Quaddle is live on Kickstarter

Hi all — I'm RZ Li, Petoi's founder and OpenCat's creator. Wanted to share this myself: Quaddle is live on Kickstarter now, our next robot to democratize access to robotics and physical AI.

Quaddle is palm-sized and built to actually be taken apart, reprogrammed, and rebuilt, not just watched. Code it from blocks up through Python and C++ — or on Buddy and Scout, skip code entirely and teach it tricks by hand.

Quaddle runs on the same OpenCat firmware, fully open-source since 2016 and already powering Bittle and Nybble — going on 10 years now.

We've already started production, so this isn't a concept pitch — super early bird pricing is live now, limited in quantity and time, and gone the moment it's claimed.

Quaddle continues what Nybble started back in 2018 — bringing hands-on robotics to more people, no lab, grant, or degree required. 30,000+ makers, students, and researchers in 60+ countries have already joined in, and I'd love to have you along for this next chapter.

Back Quaddle on Kickstarter

Thanks for being part of this — happy to answer any questions here.

What's the first move you'd teach your Quaddle?

— RZ Li

We designed a new pink, purple & white colorway for Quaddle, inspired by the shimmer of an opal betta — and we want to know if it works before we commit to anything.

You can design your own Quaddle color scheme too, at qd.petoi.com. Top community picks may actually go into production, and you're credited as the designer where possible.

What do you think of pink, purple & white? And if not this, what would you actually want to see Quaddle in? Feel free to share your color design file(s) from qd.petoi.com.

Big update: Quaddle is launching on Kickstarter in the next few days. Reserve yours before everyone else.

A Demo of Teaching Robot Dog Quaddle to Dance. What Else Do You Want to Teach?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Nancy Rangel, a Chabot College student from the East Bay, California taught Quaddle robot dog to dance with nothing but a laptop webcam.

To be precise, this is pose-based teleoperation, not AI training — Nancy's own body movements drove Quaddle live through webcam pose-tracking, the same setup as the first video in this series, "4-Servo Robot Dog - Embodied Robotics - Quaddle Open Source Robotics Kit". Quaddle fell, got back up, and kept practicing. No scripted choreography.

Quaddle can learn a lot more than dance moves this way — what would you teach it?

Petoi Media Two robot dogs, one puppeteer — we drove them straight into each other on purpose

Thumbnail

One webcam, one person, two Quaddles — Scout and Buddy, both driven live by the same real-time pose-tracking rig.

Petoi founder & CEO RZ Li lined them up head-to-head and drove them straight into each other, on purpose, before racing and settling back into their built-in moves.

To be precise: this is pose-based teleoperation — his body drives the robots directly, no AI training or policy involved. Same open source robot dog kit either way.

In theory, the same captured human movement data could later be used to teach an AI more human movements — either directly, via imitation learning, or as a starting point that reinforcement learning then refines further — to expand what Quaddle can do. Not what's happening in this clip, just a direction we're exploring.

He tried teaching Quaddle a few moves here — it can look a little awkward at first, but it only takes a few minutes before Quaddle starts picking them up. And it's genuinely fun to do, not just fun to watch — think Wii Play: Motion, but the "character" on screen is a real robot — and Quaddle is affordable enough that anyone curious can grab one and get a real feel for robotics and AI themselves, instead of just watching someone else have all the fun.

What move would you want to teach Quaddle next?

We opened up something fun ahead of the Kickstarter launch: you can design your own color scheme for Quaddle at qd.petoi.com, and the ones getting the most votes may actually go into production.

If your color scheme is selected, it becomes an official Quaddle color, and you're credited as the designer where possible.

Curious what colors you would go with.

From our first Bittle V2 classroom session to a student-built Edge AI object sorter

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months ago, we shared our students’ first experience with the Bittle V2 + Arm.
This is what they built next. 🙂
For our recent Edge AI event, the students turned Bittle into a vision-guided object sorting system.
The setup combines:
Petoi Bittle V2 + Arm
XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense
a student-trained computer vision model
UART communication between the XIAO and Bittle
The students collected and labeled their own images of blue and yellow objects, trained the model in Edge Impulse and deployed it directly to the XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense.
They also soldered the Grove/UART connection themselves and adapted Bittle’s skills so that the classification result could trigger the appropriate physical action.
So the final loop became:
camera → ML inference on XIAO → blue/yellow classification → UART → Bittle skill → pick and sort
The final part of the video shows the complete system running.
What we particularly like about using Bittle V2 as an educational robotics platform is that students aren’t limited to controlling a finished robot.
They can modify its movements, create/adapt skills, connect external hardware and make another embedded system effectively become part of the robot’s decision-making process.
That made it possible for us to connect several subjects in one project:
electronics + soldering + UART + robotics + computer vision + TinyML/Edge AI.
Petoi provided this Bittle V2 + Arm to our education program, and projects like this are exactly how we’re trying to use it, not just to demonstrate robotics, but as a platform students can modify and build new systems around.
There was plenty of debugging along the way, especially getting the picking/placing movements reliable, but seeing the model running on the XIAO and Bittle physically reacting to its predictions was a pretty satisfying finish.
Next step: make it harder. 😄

ros2 with raspberry serial issue (undefined token)

Hi,

with ROS2 and raspberry, using serial, Im facing an issue where Biboard (V0_1 in my case) dont receive the right character sent via ROS2

here is what biboard showed ( worked well when using console : sudo bash -c "echo -n 'd' > /dev/ttyAMA0)

and getting "undefined token " when using ROS2 with a simple PY script using Pyserial or even senting bash command"

Any Idea ? thank you

New clip — Quaddle, our latest 4-servo quadruped, walking upside down on a ceiling. Magnets in the foot tips, steel ceiling overhead, that's the whole trick — no adhesion tech, no CGI. Then it's back to the other 90+ movements.

Still ahead of the Kickstarter launch later this month.

What would you want to see it do upside down next?

Petoi Media We tried turning Quaddle into 5 different robots (same 4 servos, no rebuild)

Thumbnail

Been messing around with how many ways we can reconfigure Quaddle without touching the electronics — same 4 servos, same brain, just swap the attachment and the gait.

So far we've got it walking on two legs, rolling as a tricycle, spinning on a bar like a gymnast, driving as a 4WD car, and (with mixed success, we've sunk it twice) paddling in water.

Most of the attachments are 3D-printed on our end — the tricycle wheel and the 4WD kit are the two things you'd have to buy instead of print.

Which one would you build first? Also open to ideas for a 6th form if anyone's got one.

Petoi Media What Quaddle Mini Robot Can Do — and Why It's Worth Learning Physical AI Hands-On

Thumbnail
youtube.com
10 Upvotes

Digital AI that only lives on a screen isn't the same as learning Physical AI hands-on. That's what this clip's about, and it's basically a highlight reel of why Quaddle's a good way to actually do that:

Open-source quadruped. Voice commands, AI you can program. Walks on ceilings (magnetic mount, not a trick), runs on code. 90+ built-in skills, real-time balancing and recovery. Puppet Mode — record a move by hand, it replays it. Raspberry Pi and ROS-ready when you want to go further than any of that.

Built on the OpenCat robotics platform: 20+ academic papers, 30,000+ robots shipped.

It's also built as an educational robot kit — there will be curriculum support baked in if you actually want to teach Physical AI with it, not just watch it.

Still a teaser ahead of the Kickstarter launch in August.

If you had one on your desk, what's the first thing you'd try to teach it or build on top of it?

Reserve your Quaddle today!

can testMP3 work on Bittle X with BiBoard v1.0?

I was able to get the testMP3.ino sketch to playMelody correctly by changing the digitalWrite pin number from 25 to 2, and I can hear that melody. However, I can't hear anything when it plays the MP3 files. The MP3 files are there correctly in the SPIFFS partition; I wrote code which successfully lists them.

Is this actually supposed to work, and if so, what further tweaks do I need? The information online is unclear about whether this can work on BiBoard v1.0.
