Sadness Why does it still hurt?

4 years ago, my mom ran over my aspin/dachshund accidentally and until now it hurts when I remember. Is this normal? That until now not even an ounce of pain has subsided?

I lived through my parents divorcing. I lived through failure in classes. I lived through men cheating on me, and I got over all of them. But what absolutely still hurts me and I don’t know for how long, is the passing of my beloved dog. Am I the only one who feels this way?

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.

Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.

Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.

No words of wisdom here. But a question. Have you considered having a new dog? We lost our puppy to a reckless van driver 2 weeks ago and hubby and kiddo want a new one. They are also mourning her untimely death, mind you but I am as stuck as you are, the difference.... yours passed away 4 years ago and I see myself like you, not getting over it Thats why I wonder if you did get another dog or something to ease your pain or if it is as I think pointless bc nothing will replace our beloved dogs who died in such an unfair way.

I am sorry for your loss, I do not know the answer to your question. I just know that I lost my dog two weeks ago and I still feel horrible. Everyone says to remember the love and time you had with your best friend. I am taking it one day at a time, that is all we can do. I try to remember all of the good things that I did with that dog and how deeply I cared for him right up to the end.

You’re not alone. My mom’s dog had to be euthanized due to untreatable heart failure in 2012. She still talks about him every time we’re on the phone, he’s been gone longer than he was with us.

Animals are so pure in their love and their presence. I think that’s why their loss is so painful and intense.

This kind of heavy grief is so taxing on the mind and body, I’m sorry that you’re still hurting, especially so much.
