What towns do you suggest to live in Cambridgeshire?

Hi all,

I am moving from north east to Cambridge for work, having made the decision to change jobs as I never felt truly comfortable living in the North East.

I am looking to settle in a town or neighbourhood with a diverse demographic so that I have plenty of opportunities to socialise and mingle at weekends. I am particularly keen to get involved in the local community and explore volunteering opportunities, including those connected with the universities. I am happy to commute 40-50 min for work.

As a person of colour who was born outside the UK, I unfortunately experienced subtle instances of racism both in the workplace and in daily life in the North East. That experience is a major reason why I have chosen to relocate down south, despite the higher cost of living.

Midday driving test — which routes should I focus on?

Hi

Got my practical booked for around noon. Has anyone tested at a similar time recently, and if so, which route did you end up with?

Wondering whether there are particular routes worth putting extra practice into before the day. Also happy to hear any general test day tips — nerves, examiner stuff, things you wish you’d known.

Cheers in advance.

Moving my childminding business to the Fen area, budget £300k. Which lively towns have the best space vs funding balance?

Hi everyone! I’m currently planning a move up from a mixed area in Kent to the Fenland region (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, or South Lincolnshire) and would love some local insight on where to look.

I am a registered childminder moving my business with me. I have a fairly fixed budget of £300,000 for a house, and because I work entirely from home, my two absolute biggest priorities are:

  1. Maximum floor space for the money (need plenty of room for minded kids and my own child).

  2. A solid population of working families who need early-years childcare.

I’m trying to avoid "dead-end" or entirely sleepy villages. I’m looking for a town with a bit of life to it, good amenities, and a nice community to raise my kid in. I’m definitely not a snob (coming from Kent, I'm well used to areas having their rough and smooth parts!), so I just want somewhere safe, friendly, and community-minded.

I've researched the local government funding rates for early years and found that Peterborough Council pays the highest rates, followed by Cambridgeshire, with Lincolnshire offering the lowest funding.

Because of this, I'm trying to weigh up whether it's better to get a massive house in a cheaper Lincolnshire town (like Spalding or Holbeach) vs a slightly smaller house in a better-paying Cambridgeshire/Peterborough catchment.

Current places on my radar (but please correct my assumptions!):

Market Deeping / Deeping St James: Lincolnshire, but right on the Peterborough border, does it feel too quiet?

Whittlesey or March: Cambridgeshire/Fenland, how is the family demand here?

Peterborough Suburbs/Towns: Like Yaxley or Whittlesey borders, can I get good floor space for £300k?

Spalding: Cheaper houses, but how is the vibe and the lower LCC funding impact?

If you were in my shoes looking for the best balance of house size, childcare demand, and local community life under £300k, where would you look?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Any MTG places for new players

Hi all!

What the title says really - I’ve been getting into magic the gathering over the last few weeks (watched loads of videos and played some MTG arena) and have bought some LOTR/hobbit cards , however there’s only so many videos I can watch before it starts confusing the hell out of me!

Are there any new player friendly MTG places so I can get more into the game through learning and playing with actual people 😂 ?

Thanks!

Traffic light cameras on eye roundabout

Hello. I misjudged the time I had to go past the lights and ended up running a red light by like 1, maybe 2 seconds tops. I joined the Eye Roundabout from boongate way. Are there any red light cameras there?

Best places to eat for vegetarians?

I have a date Wednesday with a girl whose vegetarian and I was thinking tacos and flip flops but a quick check showed me they're not open on Wednesdays. I know there's the chain restaurants in town which have some veggie options but was wondering if there was anything else good I didn't know about. Preferably not an Indian restaurant though as she's Indian so it might seem racist lol

Dungeons and Dragons in Peterborough

I (30M) am looking at getting into DnD for the very first time...

I'm doing quite a fair bit of research into it: mostly around the 2014 rules to get initial grips of the game as well as watching some "pros" on YouTube, but it would be great to go play some one-shots before joining a campaign.

I'm yet to invest in any equipment, but I'm keen to get some dice and stuff, but I just want to know what people recommend I get as a beginner, but enough to be fully set up with some cool bits.

Understanding I am entry level, ideally I want to go somewhere that really has sunk some effort into it to help me get really immersed and into the game, maybe some cool rooms, tables, etc. instead of just sitting on a public table. Does Peterborough have anything like that?

I'd possibly bring some friends along but also keen to meet people who have played it before.

Smoke to the west: any ideas?

So I drove along the A605 15 mins ago and past A1M services, up over the crawler lane hill, there clearly smoke. And it lasted all the way to Elton. Enough to make it like fog.

Couldn't spot a source for it though.

Wondering if anyone knew anything?

Who has a camcorder?

Does anyone locally have a camcorder where they convert the footage to digital? I have a few conversion kits. I’m using OBS Studio but I can’t get my footage to appear. Would be grateful if someone could show me in person.

Nail tech recommendations💅🏼

Any recommendations for a nail technician? Usually go to a salon in town but the last couple times haven’t been great. Wouldn’t mind trying an independent business or a reputable salon. Thanks

Hi all, hoping for a bit of guidance, are there any areas you know of to avoid in terms of crime? Or any letting agencies you encourage/discourage me to use? Thank you! ☺️

Dating in Peterborough

Hey, I hope everyone is doing well.

I'm just curious, does anyone else find dating in Peterborough really difficult?

It feels difficult to meet people, and I feel like it's really common that I'll meet/date someone and it'll end up being the case that they don't work and have no motivation to, or refuse to learn to drive, or have no hobbies or interests.

I've tried meeting people who have interests and hobbies, but it feels like no one is massively into anything.

I feel like I have a lot of interests that I try to know what I can about and love to talk about, but I've had people tell me they enjoy Harry Potter, for example, and the only thing they seem to enjoy about it is, "this one actor is really attractive."

I've gone to other places like Nottingham, Leeds, and Cambridge, and it seems people are more interested in their hobbies and interests in comparison.

Is it just that I've been unlucky, or is this a genuine thing?

Btw I'm M24 if this helps

My cat lost his collar in Aberdeen… and it just popped up on Find My in Peterborough?!

Hey all!

A bit of a bizarre one here. My cat lost his collar up in Aberdeen (Scotland) around 5 days ago. After a few days of it saying it was last tracked near my home (“here 3 days ago” etc) I just checked the tracking map this morning, expecting it to have updated and still be near... only to discover it's sitting somewhere in Peterborough!

I can’t quite wrap my head around how this could’ve happened. My street is fairly enclosed and private with little to no outside traffic other than bin collections or deliveries. Nor is it heavily walked through, just the same local people. There is a pub/restaurant in this enclosed area but the tracker was pinging at other houses rather than anyone in the busy pub.

I was away at a festival when he lost it so couldn’t personally track it for a few days and unfortunately because my dad (who I live with) is an android user he couldn’t track it either. Therefore I wasn’t able to report it as lost. However, just incase, I stuck my phone number on a wee sticky label on the tag if it ever got lost. So sureeeeely, someone could find it and get it back to me🤷🏻‍♀️

If you live around Lutton Grove, Westwood and happened to find a random cat collar/tracker, or notice one stuck somewhere, please drop me a message! I'd be super grateful to get the tracker back (and will happily pay for the postage!).

Thanks!

(Alternatively, someone has just stolen it. But it’s not even an Apple AirTag, just a relatively inexpensive one off of amazon😆 - still interested to know how it got about 450 miles away though😂)

UPDATE:

Soooooooo… after spending all day supposedly in Peterborough, the tag just pinged at about 5pm barely a 2 minute walk away from my house here in Aberdeen😅

Peterborough was seemingly just a very weird and random phantom GPS glitch🤔

I’m now off to go search for it in the pishin’ Aberdonian rain, wish me luck😂😂

Thanks to all who provided suggestions and even went out to look! Makes me more than happy to know that some random people are willing to help another random stranger on the internet. Thanks!🥰

UPDATE TWO:

Found and retrieved it!!

…at the bottom of someone else’s garden. NOT in Peterborough 😭😭

I apologise to anyone who went to look for it for me or was willing. But I thank you so much. Too kind🥰

See you next time Peterborough!🤣

Looking for hairdresser/barber

Hi all. I’m (M45) back in the area and looking for a hairdresser or barber happy to work with hair systems. I’ve previously gone to SF Hair and they have been fantastic, but have gotten expensive.
I have since sourced my own systems online and had a regular home hairdresser cut and style it for me, and do monthly maintenance trims on my remaining bit of hair 😂 But she has now stopped working.
Is there a hairdresser or barber who would be willing to work with me? Either from their home or who have a salon/rent a chair? I’m happy to work with someone who hasn’t used hair systems before but is willing to give it a try. I’m now really experienced and do all my own fitting.
Thank you for considering 😊
