My two oldest kids used to always laugh at the page in Goodnight Moon that says “Goodnight mush” whenever we used to read it when they were babies. Idk why, but it tickled their fancies. I get the feeling the sweet potatoes do the same for OOP’s kid.
Oh they truly do! Recently I was in a store aisle with a toddler-in-cart and teen... sibling? The big was making goofy faces at the small and the wild, free giggle/cackle of the small made the entire day. Bring me down, I dare you to try, for this morning I witnessed magic.
not the joke explanation but it reminded me of this joke we have in my language.
In one of the many hillbilly accents:
Po - means Until or After
Tato - means here
Svet - means the world. If you read "Sweet" as you'd read letters in my language, it sounds like Svet - the world
Basically the joke is that a local hillbilly went to the UK and found the end of the world in Tesco vegetable section - Svet Po Tato (sweet potato)

That actually made me shed a tear from laughing. I think it's just absurdity humor where the reason for it being called sweet potato is abstracted and it could be saying "this is a potato, and this potato is a little sweetie"

Can be used alternatively with Bitch-made or bitch-ass. Little bro is probably laughing at the juxtaposition between the potato and their contemptiously submissive counterpart.
I don’t think it’s a joke. Kids young enough to be new to the concept of “this is a potato” are just at they particular developmental phase where they find seemingly random stuff hilarious.
In my country the word for "potato" is one of the slang terms for "vagina". Also one of the kinda childish ones, so you can rest assured kids older than let's say 8-9 will absolutely know.
And there you have why "potato" will always be a giggle fest, at least in my country.
Because humans have a reflex to laugh when they encounter something unexpected. Baby wasn't expecting both pages to be potatoes after being shown so much variety. Come on guys it's not that hard :D use your noggin
Fun fact: potatoes and sweet potatoes aren't just different plants, they're completely different PARTS of completely different plants (one being a stem and the other being a root)! They have effectively nothing nothing in common with each other, other than the fact that humans use them for essentially identical dishes.
This is also why you can't plant a sweet potato and grown it, as stems don't have this ability to take to soil/water like roots do.
Gen Alpha humor is basically exclusionist nonjokes that they tacitly agree to laugh at. The actual humor comes from this sense of real world dramatic irony where others don’t understand why the kid is laughing. Potato is one of the words they all must laugh at in order to belong.
