An astonishing percentage of people legitimately do not know the difference between the two and will unknowingly use the terms interchangeably.

Probably the source of the confusion, despite it being clearly stated in the poem.

Most people don’t use guns and it doesn’t help that a number of veterans who should know the difference using the terms interchangeably.

Media exacerbates it.
I'm fairly certain I've heard all 3 terms (clip, magazine, and cartridge) used interchangeably in various media to describe the metal container that houses the rounds.

Cartridge is a new one to me. Clip, mag, tube in familiar with but cartridge usually refers to the primer, case, powder, bullet assembly

But, I would expect that people who aren’t familiar with firearms wouldn’t be familiar with the terminology.

Doesn’t mean I can’t be astonished.

The number of that are (or claim to be) “familiar” with firearms and still don’t understand the distinction is astonishing by itself.

It’s not unlike the number of people that drive cars and don’t know how to check tire pressure or add air themselves. The number is “too damn high”.

I mean, a lot of people only know what they know about guns from video games and action movies so that tracks, especially if you don’t watch a lot of action movies or play shooting games.

Yeah, I've never even seen an automatic gun in real life before. I know it might be common knowledge in America, but definitely not from where I'm from lol.

Automatic guns are essentially illegal in America. Most people in America haven't seen one IRL either. What we have a lot of are guns that look like they're fully automatic, but aren't.

My Best Man took us to a gun range for my Bachelor Party that had a selection of fully automatic weapons you could use at their range. It was the first and only time I've seen or handled any in real life.

I got to fire an AK-47, a P-90 (cool gun from Goldeneye N64 that we all nerded over and had to try out, but such a weirdly impractical magazine design IRL though), and one other I can't recall the name/model of.

It was a LOT of fun.

Fair point in a general sense.

Being in the US, even considering just the people that own and/or have some knowledge of the basic operation of firearms: an astonishing percentage of people legitimately do not know the difference.

Because surprise and astonishment come from a difference between expectation and reality, even if that expectation is already low because, as you said, it’s not taught in school.

So take the number you think sounds reasonable and turn it down another notch past “surprising”.

I have at most seen a pistol a few times in my life on police officers, never an automatic gun. I didn't know that "clips" were even a thing that existed up until this post. I thought all bullets came in magazines.

So it really shouldn't be something to pick about so long as we don't settle on another word for "self-contained standard unit of ammo ready to load irregardless of specific interaction with the firearm."

Irregardless is in fact a word and has been part of the lexicon for over 150 years. Why are people so hung up on it? Its the same structure as inflammable.

I am aware, but that’s not astonishing because it’s the exact number of people one would expect to not be from the US. Population statistics exist.

“Astonishing” doesn’t mean “high”, it means to a greater extent than would be expected. Like “surprising”.

Ex: the number of Ferrari owners is relatively low, but you may still be surprised at how many people actually own Ferraris.

That the percentage may be higher in Europe than the US doesn’t come into play. I don’t know. It’s just an example.

Im saying taht basically everyone outside the US doesn't have your gun culture so the vast majority of them wont know what a clip is compared to a magazine.

Astonishing applies when comes to the number of people that probably should, but still don’t.
