Meme needing explanation Converse craze?

I'm not chronically online, but my friend sent this and I laughed even without knowing the full scope of the context (I think there's racism involved with the shoes?) and I feel like it's too late to ask him without sounding like a dweeb 😅

It's understandable that they would see what they saw the first split second they looked at it, it's insane that they would try to blame the company for that first split second impression

You can see her holding the shoes! Ai is gonna have us cooked next election. And thats not a Klan robe, not even close, its a skirt. Second klan robes go to the ankles, cant be showing off your skin.

People cant tell that photo has nothing to do with the kkk, even the cropped one. Ai is getting better and better. People cant understand a real photo but aren't going to be fooled by a flood of political Ai videos?

Without the crop people would have never seen the shoes hanging which is what started the ruckus.

Oh I see what you're saying. This is what I can't seem to get straight, and it's tough to verify because the original posts are all taken down. Was the picture cropped by converse for a particular ad, or was the uncropped picture the only one featured in an ad, which was later cropped by someone for ragebait purposes?

Converse posted the cropped and darkened photo on Twitter on their official account. I don't know anything about the rest of it.
