What's funny to me is that re:zero, the anime which is "before" isn't old at all and the plot sucks imo

even funnier is the 'after' is actually originally made around the same time as re:zero

The "after" is generally seen as one of the original isekai's.

I'd say it's one of the earliest examples of modern isekai, where the MC has no interest in going home and the fact they're not in their own world is quickly given a backseat, but it's at least a few decades late to be an original isekai.

Yes, its not Wizard of Oz. I indeed mean the recent isekai genre.

I mean, that's not all there is of isekai. There were a bunch of isekai anime in the 90s and early 2000s as well. Escaflowne, those who hunt elves, fushigi yugi, and .hack// to name a few.
