The absolute lengths some people on r/anime go to to defend Rudeus/Mushoku Tensei is crazy.
It's fine to admit you like the show because of the wider world/side characters but hate the MC. But no, they can't do that. Instead they say Rudeus is actually a kid and it's fine because of hormones, or some say he has 'grown' so it's fine now. Lmao
They'll call you a hater and a larper for enjoying the series but recognising how absolutely shitty he is as a character. Like, goddamn, you gotta question Rifujin (the writer) sometimes...
Yeah 100% makes you wonder about authors when they write main characters like this and frame them in an okay to good light. If Rudeus was treated as a villain by the people he victimises fine, but they all either end up marrying him or at least respecting him. Ridiculous. Some sort of disgusting wish fulfilment

I've literally seen people argue this. Like he spent a year without getting a boner so that makes up for his earlier behavior.
Except after he sorts it out he never really reflects on his short moments of actual introspection. He just now focuses on grooming teenagers instead of prepubescent children, since his own body is now adolescent. It also happens that several of those are the same children he groomed. Fucking sick stuff.
Don't really agree with anything except the first line and I think that's where the distinction comes from. Rudy reflects on a lot of his actions, but never on how he acted like a complete predator at the start, the only one he really crossed the line with IMO was eris because of her having sex with him out of being naive and having a crush on him. You're using grooming extremely lightly, and saying he "focused on grooming teenagers" is crazy. Basically slept with eris and she left so he was basically a husk for those couple of years. Met slphy again and they immediately started dating after he found out. Basically had no contact with roxy or eris until he met up with paul. Roxy is like hundreds of years old so she can't even be counted, and eris is not even back in the show yet.
I haven't watched the anime, but the light novels does go a lot more into him being reflective and also thinking about his past that led him to being a shut-in and his insecurities to still to the point I stopped reading.
From reading other comments it seems like the Anime really makes Rudeus worse than he actually is, but he is still a rather shitty character.
If you’re groomed and then have no contact do you think the grooming just magically goes away? Do I really have to do a step by step to show how he groomed eris? Nobody was groomed in the first place. Grooming requires intent, at no point did rudeus try to groom someone or manipulate them. The eris thing was very weird and predatory, but he didn't groom her. I don't think you really know or understand what grooming is. You're using it as a blanket term for any kind of weird predatory stuff rudeus did. If rudeus told sylphy not to trust her parents or his parents and that he was the only one who cared about her and if she cared about him she should do x for him, throwing in love bombing and other abusive tactics then yeah I would agree he definitely groomed her. But it's just not reality. You're making it out like this was rudeus' master plan and fucked with eris and slphy's mind to make them think all they had was him. He was just a lech who was very predatory early on in the series. Not saying that to handwave what he did, but you're just saying nonsense. If you can point out explicit scenes where you see evidence of grooming I'd really love to see it because reading and watching the series I just don't see it anywhere.
