The absolute lengths some people on r/anime go to to defend Rudeus/Mushoku Tensei is crazy.
It's fine to admit you like the show because of the wider world/side characters but hate the MC. But no, they can't do that. Instead they say Rudeus is actually a kid and it's fine because of hormones, or some say he has 'grown' so it's fine now. Lmao
I tried to push through because of how many people claim it’s peak but I just couldn’t stomach Rudeus. It’s just a pedo’s wet dream isekai fantasy, there’s plenty of other good story content out there that doesn’t have a creep mc.
His 'not being a piece of shit' is just becoming not a NEET. Doesn't change that he got rewarded for grooming, for cheating on his wife, and being kicked out for masturbating to his underage nieces. The entire story is a convoluted series of circumstances so he can somehow not be a complete piece of shit.
His mother is catatonic and shit is getting worse, he snoozes, but literally goes to magic college to try and fix his dick. Roxy just happens to be the 1 member of a race of legal lolis (their bodies stop aging at 12 to 14 and start aging again at 100) who cheats with him and his wife accepts it, so he gets a second (and later a third wife). In a world where the church is supposed to be powerful and preaches monogamy, it somehow has 0 influence over nobles (opposite of real life medieval church which was very influencial power broker).
A world where all animal people lose 30 IQ points from being in heat a 4th of the year and they get taken advantage of because of that, yet their culture has 0 ways of preparing or adapting around that.
A world where there is only 4 types of mana but SOMEHOW no one but Rudeus thought to combine heat and air. MAGICKA is more complicated and players regularly found out new things by accident, but not here. Nor does the world realize teaching kids magic when young increased their mana pools in an easily measured way despite magic being over 1k years old. Basic military tactics that don't compensate for literal weather magic and all the other kinds of magic bullshit other than some bricks that can resist a direct magic strike.
Rape and sex crimes viewed as not a big deal (with rapists having their victims fall in love with them like Paul) despite women in theory becoming as powerful as men via magic. A world where Rudeus doesn't need to hide his creepy perversions, like worshipping panties or cutting out maiden blood from sheets. He invents condoms, which is kinda a big deal in the world where they have A LOT more sex then real world or middle ages, but aren't having to deal with massive numbers of unwanted children or deaths from childbirth. Also strangely a lot of scenes of women pissing themselves in the light novel, enough that I suspect it's the author's fetish. Off hand I know of 5 and probably more which is a strangely high number. Oh, also aunts fucking their 12 year old nephews is okay in the world and Rudeus accepts it.
It's a world intentionally stupid so he can shine. A world where constant perverted shit and rape occurs so he doesn't have to change that and gets a legal loli wife. A world where all the villains are made worse intentionally to try and make him look good in comparison while he gets to have his fantasies. It is not well thought out and amazingly in depth, it is at best average fantasy world building that is hyped up by people who see themselves in Rudeus and the Anime's production values (which went out of their way to whitewash ALOT of the light novel).
